First Nations peoples made varied use of the river for sustenance before settlers of European origin arrived, such as using its valleys in the buffalo hunt. The name "Bow" refers to the reeds that grew along its banks and were used by the local First Nations peoples to make bows; the Peigan name for the river is "Makhabn", meaning "river where bow reeds grow".
The river is an important source of water for irrigation and drinking water. Between the years 1910 and 1960, the Bow River and its tributaries were engineered to provide hydroelectric power, primarily for Calgary's use. This significantly altered the river's flow and certain ecosystems.
It was re-created in 1976 from parts of Crowfoot, Lethbridge, Palliser and Rocky Mountain ridings. It was abolished in 1987 when it was redistributed into Calgary North, Calgary Northeast, Calgary West, Crowfoot, Lethbridge, Macleod, Red Deer and Wild Rose ridings.
The Bow River is a river in the Great Southern region of Western Australia, not to be confused with Bow River in the Kimberley region of northern Western Australia.
The river rises on the eastern edge of the Frankland State Forest and flows in a southerly direction discharging into Irwin Inlet, which opens to the Southern Ocean at Foul Bay.
Bow River is a fresh water river with potential to be used as a water source in the area.
The hamlet of Bow Bridge, once a timber milling and farming settlement, is located where the South Coast Highway crosses Bow River, about 25km East of Walpole.
Forms of environmental damage have been identified at the river and its wetlands, including:
The river flows into the Ord River at Lake Argyle.
There are 12 tributaries of the Bow River including Wilson River, Turkey Creek, Limestone Creek and Spring Creek.
Bow River is the subject of the famous song of the same name by the iconic Australian pub rock band Cold Chisel. The song was later covered by its composer, Cold Chisel member Ian Moss.
Bow River rises below Galla Gilla Mountain and is formed by the confluence of Bobialla Creek and Spring Creek, near the village of Bow, west of Merriwa, and flows generally south southwest, southeast, and south, joined by three minor tributaries, before reaching its confluence with the Goulburn River within Goulburn River National Park, west of Denman. Bow River descends 150 metres (490ft) over its 38 kilometres (24mi)course.

Listen now to the wind babe
Listen now to the rain
Feel that water lickin' at my feet again
I don't want to see this town no more
Wastin' my days on a factory floor
First thing you know I'll be back in Bow River again
Anytime you want babe, you can come around
But only six days separates me and the great top end
I been working hard, tweleve hours a day
And the money I saved won't buy my youth again
Goin' for the heat babe, and a tropical rain
In a place where no man's puttin' on the dog for me
Waitin' on the weekend, set o' brand new tyres
And back in Bow River's just where I want to be
Listen now to the wind babe
Listen now to the rain
Feel that water lickin' at my feet again
I don't want to see this town no more
Too many years made up my mind to go or stay
Right to my dying day
I don't want to see another engine line
Too many years and I owe my mind
First set o' wheels headin' back Bow River again
First thing you know I'll be back in Bow River again
Got the motor runnin', got the rest of my days
Sold everything I owned for a song
So anytime you want babe, you can come around
But don't leave it too late you just might find me gone
Listen now to the wind babe . . .
I don't need the score
I'm goin' through the door
Gonna tell the man I don't want no more
Pick up a fast car and burn my name in the road
One week two week maybe even more
Piss all my money up against the damn wall
First thing you know I'll be back in Bow River again
