An elevated railway (also known in Europe as overhead railway) is a rapid transit railway with the tracks above street level on a viaduct or other steel, concrete or brick structure. The railway may be standard gauge, narrow gauge, light rail, monorail or a suspension railway. Elevated railways are usually used in urban areas where there would otherwise be a large number of level crossings. Most of the time, the tracks of elevated railways that run on steel viaducts can be seen from street level.
History
The earliest elevated railway was the London and Greenwich Railway on a brick viaduct of 878 arches, built between 1836 and 1838. The first 2.5 miles (4.0km) of the London and Blackwall Railway (1840) was also on a viaduct. During the 1840s there were other schemes for elevated railways in London which did not come to fruition.
Rapid transit, also known as metro, subway or underground is a type of high-capacity public transport generally found in urban areas. Unlike buses or trams, rapid transit systems are electric railways that operate on an exclusive right-of-way, which cannot be accessed by pedestrians or other vehicles of any sort, and which is often grade separated in tunnels or on elevated railways.
Modern services on rapid transit systems are provided on designated lines between stations typically using electric multiple units on rail tracks, although some systems use guided rubber tyres, magnetic levitation, or monorail. The stations typically have high platforms, without steps inside the trains, requiring custom-made trains in order to avoid gaps. They are typically integrated with other public transport and often operated by the same public transport authorities. However, some rapid transit systems have at-grade intersections between a rapid transit line and a road or between two rapid transit lines. It is unchallenged in its ability to transport large numbers of people quickly over short distances with little use of land. Variations of rapid transit include people movers, small-scale light metro, and the commuter rail hybrid S-Bahn.
Boston (1833–1850), was an outstanding chestnut Thoroughbred racehorse and a Leading sire in North America three times from 1851 to 1853. He started in about 45 races, winning 40 of these, including 15 in succession. Boston was later one of the initial inductees into the Hall of Fame.
Breeding
He was a chestnut stallion with a white blaze on his nose and he was foaled in Richmond, Virginia. Boston was bred by the Virginia attorney John Wickham (who had been Aaron Burr's counsel in his trial for treason). He was by the very good racehorse, Timoleon (by the great Sir Archy), his dam was Sister to Tuckahoe by Ball’s Florizel. Boston was inbred to Diomed in the third generation (3m x 3f). He was a half-brother to the Shylock mare who founded a successful family. They were from the number 40 family which traced back to the imported mare, Kitty Fisher.
As a two-year-old, Boston was lost by his breeder in a card game and was given to Wickham's friend Nathaniel Rives, of Richmond to repay his debt of $800. He was named after a popular card game and later given the nickname of "Old Whitenose". Boston had a wilful temperament and was difficult to train. Sent to the stable of John Belcher, and then to the trainer L. White, and then back to Belcher, White said, "The horse should either be castrated or shot—preferably the latter."
The Boston refers to a series of various step dances, considered a slow Americanized version of the waltz presumably named after where it originated. It is completed in one measure with the weight kept on the same foot through two successive beats. The "original" Boston is also known as the New York Boston or Boston Point.
Passengers take last ride on Boston's elevated rapid transit rail
From the time capsule: On Thursday, April 30, 1987, Boston's last Orange Line elevated rapid transit rail trains rumbled over Washington Street and through the neighborhoods of Roxbury and Jamaica Plain to their final stop at Forest Hills Station. New surface-level service through the Southwest Corridor of the city opened to the public the following Monday, May 4th. Gone from the thousands of riders who boarded the old elevated T regularly was a noisy, rickety, yet reliable fixture in the community that got people where they wanted to go for more than 80 years. Which is why, as Marcus Jones reports, many people chose to say good-bye to the El during its final day in service by taking one last ride. @VideoScrapbookOfOurTimes

The Orange Line: Boston's Elevated Railway
While the Tremont Street Subway was America's First Subway, Boston had taken the elevated railways from New York, Chicago, and Berlin to make their own. Today, we'll look at how the orange came about and how, before, it was once an elevated railway to a completely grounded one.

Boston Elevated Subways And The Arts 02.16.2021
DeMarco J. talks about the Boston Elevated Subway lines and what could've happened if they were to exist today in 2021. What if the Elevated Orange Line on Washington Street or Main Street existed today in #Boston, just like how MTA/IRT Elevated Subways exist today in #NYC?
Plus, Art drawings of the #MBTA Orange & Green Line Subways in the City of Boston.

Anjou v. Boston Elevated Railway Co. | 94 N.E. 386 (1911)
To recover in a premises liability case, a plaintiff has to show not only injury resulting from a hazardous condition on the defendant’s premises, but also that the defendant knew or should have known about it. But that’s easier said than done. The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court considered what it takes to meet this burden in Anjou versus Boston Elevated Railway.
Helen Anjou slipped on a banana peel on an upper platform of the Boston Elevated Railway station. Anjou was following a Boston Elevated employee who was directing her to another train car. Witnesses v...

Witnesses variously described the banana peel as black, flattened, gritty, and trampled. Boston Elevated had employees assigned to keep the platforms free of anything that might injure travelers.
Anjou sued Boston Elevated. After trial, the court ordered a verdict for Boston Elevated, finding that Anjou hadn’t presented sufficient evidence of negligence to submit the case to the jury. The parties appealed to the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court.

What would Boston look like if we had elevated railways? A Blue Line from East Boston to Brighton? We explore the failed prototypes and "what-ifs" in the city's transportation history with an expert.

While the Tremont Street Subway was America's First Subway, Boston had taken the elevated railways from New York, Chicago, and Berlin to make their own. Today, we'll look at how the orange came about and how, before, it was once an elevated railway to a completely grounded one.

Anjou v. Boston Elevated Railway Co. | 94 N.E. 386 (1911)
To recover in a premises liability case, a plaintiff has to show not only injury resulting from a hazardous condition on the defendant’s premises, but also that the defendant knew or should have known about it. Witnesses variously described the banana peel as black, flattened, gritty, and trampled. Boston Elevated had employees assigned to keep the platforms free of anything that might injure travelers.
