The district was formed on 1 April 1974, by the merger of the municipal borough of Royal Tunbridge Wells along with Southboroughurban district, Cranbrook Rural District and most of Tonbridge Rural District.
Description of borough
Location
The borough of Tunbridge Wells lies along the south western border of Kent, partly on the northern edge of the Weald, the remainder on the Weald Clayplain in the upper reaches of the rivers Teise andBeult.
The North Weald area
The restricted area immediately to the north and west of Tunbridge Wells lies within the Weald. The presence of sandstone outcrops and the chalybeate springs, together with old workings, point to ancient iron manufacturing in the area.
Weald Clay plain
This plain is part of the so-called Garden of England, named for its extensive orchards and former hop farms, sheep and cattle. A string of villages lies across this plain, from Brenchley and Horsmonden to Benenden and Headcorn.
Royal Tunbridge Wells (often shortened to Tunbridge Wells) is a large town in western Kent, England, about 40 miles (64km) south-east of central London by road, 34.5 miles (55.5km) by rail. The town is close to the border of the county of East Sussex. It is situated at the northern edge of the High Weald, the sandstone geology of which is exemplified by the rock formations at the Wellington Rocks and High Rocks.
The town came into being as a spa in the Restoration and had its heyday as a tourist resort under Beau Nash when the Pantiles and its chalybeate spring attracted visitors who wished to take the waters. Though its popularity waned with the advent of sea bathing, the town remains popular and derives some 30 percent of its income from the tourist industry.
1974-1983: The Municipal Borough of Royal Tunbridge Wells, the Urban District of Southborough, the Rural District of Cranbrook (the civil parishes of Benenden, Cranbrook, Frittenden, Goudhurst, Hawkhurst, and Sandhurst), and in the Rural District of Tonbridge the civil parishes of Bidborough, Brenchley, Capel, Horsmonden, Lamberhurst, Paddock Wood, Pembury, and Speldhurst.
1983-1997: The Borough of Tunbridge Wells (the wards of Benenden, Brenchley, Capel, Cranbrook, Culverdon, Frittenden and Sissinghurst, Goudhurst, Hawkhurst, Horsmonden, Lamberhurst, Paddock Wood, Pantiles, Park, Pembury, Rusthall, St James', St John's, St Mark's, Sandhurst, Sherwood, Southborough East, Southborough North, Southborough West, and Speldhurst and Bidborough).
1997-2010: The Borough of Tunbridge Wells wards of Brenchley, Capel, Culverdon, Goudhurst, Horsmonden, Lamberhurst, Paddock Wood, Pantiles, Park, Pembury, Rusthall, St James', St John's, St Mark's, Sherwood, Southborough East, Southborough North, Southborough West, and Speldhurst and Bidborough.
Wells Crater is an impact crater in the Eridania quadrangle on Mars at 60.2°S and 237.9°W, and it is 103.0km in diameter. Its name was approved in 1973 by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) Working Group for Planetary System Nomenclature (WGPSN), and it was named after H. G. Wells.
Wells is a surname of English origin, but is occasionally used as a given name too. It derives from occupation, location, and topography. The occupational name (i.e. "Wellman") derives from the person responsible for a village's spring. The locational name (i.e. "Well") derives from the pre-7th century waella ("spring"). The topographical name (i.e. "Attewell") derives from living near a spring. The oldest public record is found in 1177 in the county of Norfolk. Variations of Wells include Well, Welman, Welles, Wellman and Wellsman. At the time of the British Census of 1881Wells Surname at Forebears, its relative frequency was highest in Berkshire (3.2 times the British average), followed by Leicestershire, Oxfordshire, Kinross-shire, Huntingdonshire, Kent, Sussex, Lincolnshire, Dumfriesshire and Bedfordshire. Exploring Royal TUNBRIDGE WELLS! (We Didn't Expect This)
When we visited Royal Tunbridge Wells we expected a certain eloquence and snobbery but what we got was an alien landscape and bogey lane!
We don't really know what we were expecting from a day out in Tunbridge Wells but it certainly wasn't this! We loved the mix of historic charm and weird, unexpected sights that made this more of an adventure than a stroll through a Royal town.

Fancy an urban stay full of delicious food, independent shops and pampering? Watch our day in Royal Tunbridge Wells video for inspiration: https://youtu.be/FAAqATiaYws
Royal Tunbridge Wells is such a magical place. I set off really early in the morning so I would get there for roughly 6am, before most people got out of bed. It was so quiet and peaceful. This was my first time visiting this Kentish town, so I had no idea of what route to really take and I played it by ear. I am sure I missed plenty of great places and I will definitely return.

Most of my content is filmed in one take (unless my battery runs out) and handheld. Where possible I try to use binaural 3D audio, so if you watch with headphones, you will get a very realistic experience.
Please feel free to browse through my channel to discover more UK towns and cities, parks and beaches. I also enjoy filming when I travel abroad.
You can also support my channel by buying me a coffee to enjoy after the walk.
