Bois de Sioux is a name derived from French meaning "Woods of the Sioux".
Course
The river flows northward from a Corps of Engineersdam at the north end of Lake Traverse and shortly enters Mud Lake. Downstream of Mud Lake it is a small stream, and its flow has been channelized and straightened in some places so that the watercourse diverges slightly from the historic state boundary. It passes the town of White Rock before joining the Otter Tail River to form the Red River of the North at Wahpeton, North Dakota, and Breckenridge, Minnesota.
Tributaries
The two largest tributaries of the Bois de Sioux are the Mustinka River, which flows into Lake Traverse, and the Rabbit River south of Breckenridge; both of these enter from Minnesota.
The Bois de Sioux Watershed District’s first ditch retrofit — on Traverse County Ditch 37 near Wheaton — could be the first of many such retrofits designed to alleviate flooding on farm fields and improve water quality in rivers and streams. A Clean Water Fund grant is in play.
Farming accounts for 93 percent of land use in the 1,400-square-mile watershed, which includes parts of six west-central Minnesota counties. The ditch drains into Twelvemile Creek, the Mustinka River and Lake Traverse.

Bois de Sioux Watershed District
The Bois de Sioux Watershed District’s Clean Water Fund-backed multipurpose drainage management project on Traverse County Ditch 35 in Redpath Township finished in fall 2022. It ties in to the BDSWD’s planned Redpath flood impoundment, which will work together with the existing North Ottawa Impoundment.
The next stage of work involves remeandering a segment of the Mustinka River and creating a two-stage ditch to handle floodwater. What is excavated from the remeander will be used in the levee for the Redpath impoundment.

Bois de Sioux Watershed District 2 Solving the Problem
Part 2 of 5 showing the work of the Bois de Sioux Watershed District building floodwater retention. Scientists from a wide range of disciplines work together to devise a way to minimize the impacts of flooding in the Valley. Their goal: Figure out how to reduce spring runoff by 20% compared to the disastrous flood of 1997. "If they could've taken 20% off the flow in the Red that year, Grand Forks would've made it."
