1960 Bobby Johns Fatal Pit Crash @ Darlington

Bobby Johns flips on lap 85 of the 1960 Southern 500 after making contact with Roy Tyner. Johns' car crashes into the backstretch wall causing pieces of debris to fly into the pit area killing crew-chief Paul McDuffie, mechanic Charles Sweatlund, and Nascar inspector Joe Taylor. Three other Atlanta mechanics, John Blaylock, Ralph Byers, and R.M. Vermillion, Jr., were seriously injured in the crash.

Bobby Johns Interview (April 19, 1969)

Johns raced in the NASCAR series in the 1956–1969 seasons, with 141 career starts. He had two wins among his 36 top ten finishes and finished the 1960 season 3rd in the points. He also attempted to qualify for the Indianapolis 500 seven times and succeeded in both 1965 and 1969, where he finished 7th and 10th, respectively. Johns was able to race in NASCAR regardless of being conscripted into the United States Army. Johns died on March 7, 2016, in his Miami, Florida home at age 83.

1960 NASCAR Southern 500 - *FATAL* Pit Accident After Bobby Johns Flipped Into Pit Wall

During the 1960 Southern 500 at Darlington, Bobby Johns was leading when his car tangled with Roy Tyner's. Johns went onto his roof and his car smashed into the pit wall on the back straight. The wall broke on impact and debris went into the pit area, killing a car owner, a mechanic & a NASCAR official. Two more people were critically injured, another seriously. Johns & Tyner were OK.
