Graham Coxon At TPS! [All New Pedalboard, The Waeve & Blur Reunion Chat]
Talk and tones with the Blur & The Waeve leg-end!
Welcome to the show. It is our distinct and marvellous pleasure to welcome the wonderful Graham Coxon to Schwangri-La. It’s Graham’s second appearance on the show. Since the first time - six years ago - there's been the small matter of British music legends Blur reforming, and of course the birth of a new band, The Waeve, with Rose Elinor Dougall.
In this interview we catch up on all of that, alongside a listen to Graham’s latest pedalboard, put together by Dan. Splendid noise and inspirational enlightenment awaits…
Enjoy the show!

In this episode we welcome the wonderful, enigmatic and popular-music-changing Graham Coxon to the show. Graham is a founding member of legendary British band, Blur who reigned alongside Oasis at the top of the 1990s Britpop scene. They’ve sold millions of records and go down as one of the most famous and successful British bands ever. Graham also has a successful solo career and he does soundtracks too.
Coxon’s unorthodox, visceral approach to guitar and music is influenced by – and continues to influence – a long line of alternative players who eschew a traditional scales-and-‘correct’-technique approach in favour simply whatever works best in the context of the music. Quite a bit of this video centres around that whole discussion as it unfolds into a fascinating and inspiring insight into what's going on inside his head. Recollections of a few classic Blur guitar moments are the icing on the cake.
Please note that there’s not a huge amount of playing in this video. That Pedal Shed is entirely out of context with Graham’s usual worlds of all-encompassing live performance, immersive songwriting and in-the-moment recording.
He is a true artist and we thank him warmly for his insight and candour in this video… and of course his colossal contribution to British music.
We asked Graham if he’d like to plug any current activity in this video. He’s way too modest for all of that, so please check out www.grahamcoxon.co.uk and sign up to his newsletter to find out what’s going on in his world.
Meantime, enjoy the video…

Blur is an English rock band formed in 1988, consisting of vocalist Damon Albarn, guitarist Graham Coxon, bassist Alex James, and drummer Dave Rowntree. The band was central to the 1990s Britpop movement. They achieved mass popularity in the UK, aided greatly by a chart battle with rivals Oasis in 1995, which was dubbed the “Battle of Britpop”.
Their self-titled fifth album, released in 1997, incorporated influences from the lo-fi styles of American indie rock groups, and the album became their third to top UK charts.
“Song 2” is the second track, and the single, from this self-titled album. This song was atypical of Blur’s previous style as it sounds the least like the rest of the band’s Britpop catalogue. When the band originally wrote the song, they wanted to play it for their label as a joke, because they thought it was far too noisy and horrible to ever be released as a single. However, the label loved it!
The song was written to poke fun at the Grunge music that was bog in America at the time. Graham Coxon was tired of doing complicated parts and wanted to do something simple, but horrible and make as much noise as possible. The song was tracked in Maison Rouge Studio, with the vocals recorded live, and lots of fuzz and distortion on the guitar, producing the loud, extreme sound Coxon was aiming for. The song also featured two drum kits, with Dave Rowntree and Graham Coxon both banging on the drums simultaneously.
The track’s title was originally just a working title, representing the track’s placement on the album, but the name stuck. In the end, the numerology works out well, as the song is not only the second song on the album, but is 2 minutes and 2 seconds long, features 2 verses and 2 choruses, and eventually peaked at #2 on UK charts.

Noel Hogan is an Irish musician and record producer best known as the lead guitarist and co-songwriter of the Irish alt-rock band the Cranberries
Hogan formed the Cranberries with his brother Mike and drummer Fergal Lawler in 1989. The group recruited Dolores O’Riordan as singer soon after forming. The band went on to sell in excess of 40 million records worldwide. In total, Hogan has released eight albums with the Cranberries, most of which were produce by Stephen Street.
The Cranberries went on a six-year hiatus from 2003 to 2009. However, after lead singer Dolores O’Riordan’s death on 15 January 2018, Hogan confirmed the disbandment the Cranberries, which occurred after the release of the posthumous album In the End in 2019, saying: “The Cranberries without Dolores just isn’t The Cranberries… we won’t replace our friend and lead singer”.
With the Cranberries on hiatus from 2003 to 2009, Hogan turned to focus on his own music. He began working with programmer Matt Vaughan, who had already done work on unreleased Cranberries songs and Dolores O’Riordan’s solo material. Mono Band was born with Hogan as the sole band member. With vocals being supplied by Richard Walters, Alexandra Hamnede, Kate Havnevik, and other guest artists, Hogan worked with Cranberries’ veteran producer Stephen Street to compile a mix of 12 tracks. Working on his side project at the same time, saw their resulting debut album, Mono Band, released on 20 May 2005. Hogan and Mono Band vocalist Richard Walters went on to form Arkitekt. Arkitekt released two EPs at that time in 2009, working on new material.
Hogan’s work independent of the Cranberries has been released on his own label, Gohan Records and is published through Fairwood Music (UK) Ltd for the world.
Hogan has also been producing bands on the local music scene of Limerick. Gohan Records has recently released, in collaboration with Limerick Live 95FM’s Green and Live show, “Tonelist”, a collection featuring musicians in the Limerick music scene.
