Venomous snake
Venomous snakes are species of the suborder Serpentes that are capable of producing venom, which is used primarily for immobilizing prey and defense mostly via mechanical injection by fangs. Common venomous snakes include the families Elapidae, Viperidae, Atractaspididae, and some of the Colubridae. The toxicity of them is mainly indicated by murine LD50, while multifarious factors are considered to judge their potential danger to humans.
Evolution
The evolutionary history of venomous snakes can be traced back to as far as 25 million years ago.Snake venom is actually modified saliva used for prey immobilization and self-defense and is usually delivered through highly specialized teeth, hollow fangs, directly into the bloodstream or tissue of the target. Evidence has recently been presented for the Toxicofera hypothesis, but venom was present (in small amounts) in the ancestors of all snakes (as well as several lizard families) as 'toxic saliva' and evolved to extremes in those snake families normally classified as venomous by parallel evolution. The Toxicofera hypothesis further implies that 'nonvenomous' snake lineages have either lost the ability to produce venom (but may still have lingering venom pseudogenes), or actually do produce venom in small quantities, likely sufficient enough to help capture small prey but causing no harm to humans when bitten.

Bitis arietans
Bitis arietans is a venomous viper species found in savannah and grasslands from Morocco and western Arabia throughout Africa except for the Sahara and rain forest regions. It is responsible for causing the most snakebite fatalities in Africa owing to various factors, such as its wide distribution, frequent occurrence in highly populated regions, and aggressive disposition. Two subspecies are currently recognized, including the nominate subspecies described here.
Common names
The species is commonly known as the puff adder,African puff adder, or common puff adder.
"arietans" = "striking violently" and is derived from the Latin arieto.
Description
The average size is about 1 m (39.3 inches) in total length (body + tail) and very stout. Large specimens of 190 cm (75 in) total length, weighing over 6.0 kg (13.2 lbs) and with a girth of 40 cm (16 in) have been reported. Specimens from Saudi Arabia are not as large, usually no more than 80 cm (31 in) in total length. Males are usually larger than females and have relatively longer tails. The head has a less than triangular shape with a blunt and rounded snout. Still, the head is much wider than the neck. The rostral scale is small. The circumorbital ring consists of 10–16 scales. Across the top of the head, there are 7–11 interocular scales. 3–4 scales separate the suboculars and the supralabials. There are 12–17 supralabials and 13–17 sublabials. The first 3–4 sublabials contact the chin shields, of which there is only one pair. Often, there are two fangs on each maxilla and both can be functional.

Top 10 Most Poisonous Snakes in the World
Snakes are probably some of the most feared. And while this is perfectly in line, it may be a bit of a stretch. Because, out of the 3,000 known snake species, just a mere 200 of them pose any considerable danger to humans.
And among these 200 species, there are a select few with the most lethal venom. In our video today, we’ve sampled 10 of these bad boys from the serpent kingdom that you’d rather your paths don’t cross.

#10 Boomslang
In the Afrikaans language, boomslang translates to tree snake which means a larger part of this serpent’s time is spent hanging on trees. Its hunting, too, is highly dependent on trees as it has evolved to mimic the branches.
In case of a potential meal, it extends forward in almost motionless fashion before striking. This is when it releases its potent venom into the victim via its large fangs and extremely flexible jaws that can open for as much 170 degrees.
Despite the potency of their venom and their large 1.6-meter lengths, boomslangs choose their enemies carefully. Usually, they flee from any animal they deem too large to eat, choosing to attack only the likes of frogs, lizards, and chameleons.
Typically, a boomslang only attacks people if they attempt to handle or kill it. That’s why despite being one of the most venomous snakes around, it has resulted in so little human fatalities in its natural range. But perhaps its slow-acting venom has also played a role.
The symptoms usually show up hours after the bite, which is enough to seek medical attention.
On the other hand, this can give victims a false sense of reassurance that could very well escalate the situation. Victims can require a blood transfusion if an anti-venom hasn’t been administered within 24 to 48 hours.
#9 Banded Krait
This is one of the largest kraits with maximum lengths averaging just below 3 meters. Most outstanding are the alternate black and yellow bands across its entire body, hence the name. Also conspicuous in this snake species is the triangular cross-section that isn't so common in other snakes.
These showy bad boys usually feed on other snakes but routinely snack on fish and frogs whenever possible.
Despite their highly-venomous reputation, banded kraits are hardly seen as pretty much of their active time is after nightfall. This is when they are likely to bite and hence more dangerous.
During daytime, they prefer to laze around in pits, grass, or drains.
If disturbed, their first go-to defense is to hide their heads under their body coils preferring to be left alone. But for anyone who doesn't heed this kind call, the snake will bite delivering around 20-114 milligrams of venom.
In small amounts, the venom triggers vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, and abdominal pain. Large doses combined with a lack of treatment lead to respiratory failure, suffocation, and death.
The fatality from banded krait bites has been found to be about 10% which isn’t so bad compared to other snakes in this video.
#8 Tiger Snake
The tiger snake is so named because of its tiger-like banded body although the colors vary a lot between different individuals. For the most part, they’re solitary and only seek company for mating purposes.
A bulk of their hunting activities is restricted to daytime although they can also opt for night-time snacks when it’s warm.
Tiger snakes are native to Australia where they’ve accounted for at least 17% of identified snakebites between 2005 and 2015. According to estimates, fatalities from these bites range between 40 and 60%.
Part of the snake’s lethality lies in its venom having a blood-clotting agent and a nerve paralyzer that can immediately spell doom for the victim.
Symptoms of a bite usually include pain, especially in the neck and foot regions, numbness, tingling, and sweating. These are quickly followed by breathing difficulties, paralysis, and eventual death if there is no immediate medical care.
But in almost all cases, the affected limb is instantly immobilized.
Naturally, most of them would rather stay away from people but launch into an offensive once startled or if they feel threatened.
#7 Coastal Taipan
Found in Australia and New Zealand, the coastal taipan is known not just for its potent venom but its size too. In Australia, it is considered the longest venomous snake growing to as much as 2 meters on average.
Larger specimens exist although they’re hard to come by. For instance, records kept by the Queensland museum show the longest coastal taipan to be around 3 meters.
The snake contains one of the most lethal venoms of any terrestrial snake, ranking at number three in the snake kingdom.

In the USA the Rattlesnake is often said to be the fastest striking snake but experiments showed that some of the harmless snakes strike at about the same speed.
When striking at prey, snakes like the Puff Adder and Rattlesnake miss quite often – even as often as 45% of the times and the number of misses will obviously increase with distance. When a snake like a Puff Adder strikes at a rodent, it usually envenomates its prey and immediately releases it as rodents scratch and bite. The snake then follows the scent trail of its prey with flickering tongue and can distinguish the trail of its prey from that of other rodents as the action of envenomation changes the odour of the trail left by its prey. Smaller rodents or other prey like frogs or lizards are not released. Non-venomous snakes like pythons and house snakes obviously hang onto their prey as do arboreal snakes that eat birds. With back-fanged snakes it is important for the snake to move its prey to the back of the jaw where the fangs are situated to effectively envenomate the meal.

Top 10 Most Poisonous Snakes in the World
Snakes are probably some of the most feared. And while this is perfectly in line, it may be a bit of a stretch. Because, out of the 3,000 known snake species, just a mere 200 of them pose any considerable danger to humans.
And among these 200 species, there are a select few with the most lethal venom. In our video today, we’ve sampled 10 of these bad boys from the serpent kingdom that you’d rather your paths don’t cross.
Take a look.
#10 Boomslang
In the Afrikaans language, boomslang translates to tree snake which means a larger part of this serpent’s time is spent hanging on trees. Its hunting, too, is highly dependent on trees as it has evolved to mimic the branches.
In case of a potential meal, it extends forward in almost motionless fashion before striking. This is when it releases its potent venom into the victim via its large fangs and extremely flexible jaws that can open for as much 170 degrees.
Despite the potency of their venom and their large 1.6-meter lengths, boomslangs choose their enemies carefully. Usually, they flee from any animal they deem too large to eat, choosing to attack only the likes of frogs, lizards, and chameleons.
Typically, a boomslang only attacks people if they attempt to handle or kill it. That’s why despite being one of the most venomous snakes around, it has resulted in so little human fatalities in its natural range. But perhaps its slow-acting venom has also played a role.
The symptoms usually show up hours after the bite, which is enough to seek medical attention.
On the other hand, this can give victims a false sense of reassurance that could very well escalate the situation. Victims can require a blood transfusion if an anti-venom hasn’t been administered within 24 to 48 hours.
#9 Banded Krait
This is one of the largest kraits with maximum lengths averaging just below 3 meters. Most outstanding are the alternate black and yellow bands across its entire body, hence the name. Also conspicuous in this snake species is the triangular cross-section that isn't so common in other snakes.
These showy bad boys usually feed on other snakes but routinely snack on fish and frogs whenever possible.
Despite their highly-venomous reputation, banded kraits are hardly seen as pretty much of their active time is after nightfall. This is when they are likely to bite and hence more dangerous.
During daytime, they prefer to laze around in pits, grass, or drains.
If disturbed, their first go-to defense is to hide their heads under their body coils preferring to be left alone. But for anyone who doesn't heed this kind call, the snake will bite delivering around 20-114 milligrams of venom.
In small amounts, the venom triggers vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, and abdominal pain. Large doses combined with a lack of treatment lead to respiratory failure, suffocation, and death.
The fatality from banded krait bites has been found to be about 10% which isn’t so bad compared to other snakes in this video.
#8 Tiger Snake
The tiger snake is so named because of its tiger-like banded body although the colors vary a lot between different individuals. For the most part, they’re solitary and only seek company for mating purposes.
A bulk of their hunting activities is restricted to daytime although they can also opt for night-time snacks when it’s warm.
Tiger snakes are native to Australia where they’ve accounted for at least 17% of identified snakebites between 2005 and 2015. According to estimates, fatalities from these bites range between 40 and 60%.
Part of the snake’s lethality lies in its venom having a blood-clotting agent and a nerve paralyzer that can immediately spell doom for the victim.
Symptoms of a bite usually include pain, especially in the neck and foot regions, numbness, tingling, and sweating. These are quickly followed by breathing difficulties, paralysis, and eventual death if there is no immediate medical care.
But in almost all cases, the affected limb is instantly immobilized.
Naturally, most of them would rather stay away from people but launch into an offensive once startled or if they feel threatened.
#7 Coastal Taipan
Found in Australia and New Zealand, the coastal taipan is known not just for its potent venom but its size too. In Australia, it is considered the longest venomous snake growing to as much as 2 meters on average.
Larger specimens exist although they’re hard to come by. For instance, records kept by the Queensland museum show the longest coastal taipan to be around 3 meters.
The snake contains one of the most lethal venoms of any terrestrial snake, ranking at number three in the snake kingdom.

Venomous snake
Venomous snakes are species of the suborder Serpentes that are capable of producing venom, which is used primarily for immobilizing prey and defense mostly via mechanical injection by fangs. Common venomous snakes include the families Elapidae, Viperidae, Atractaspididae, and some of the Colubridae. The toxicity of them is mainly indicated by murine LD50, while multifarious factors are considered to judge their potential danger to humans.
Evolution
The evolutionary history of venomous snakes can be traced back to as far as 25 million years ago.Snake venom is actually modified saliva used for prey immobilization and self-defense and is usually delivered through highly specialized teeth, hollow fangs, directly into the bloodstream or tissue of the target. Evidence has recently been presented for the Toxicofera hypothesis, but venom was present (in small amounts) in the ancestors of all snakes (as well as several lizard families) as 'toxic saliva' and evolved to extremes in those snake families normally classified as venomous by parallel evolution. The Toxicofera hypothesis further implies that 'nonvenomous' snake lineages have either lost the ability to produce venom (but may still have lingering venom pseudogenes), or actually do produce venom in small quantities, likely sufficient enough to help capture small prey but causing no harm to humans when bitten.

A víbora sopro ( arietans Bitis ) é uma venenosas víbora espécies encontradas em savana e pastagens de Marrocos e oeste Saudita durante toda a África , exceto para o Sahara e de floresta tropical regiões. É responsável por causar a maioria das fatalidades por picadas de cobra na África devido a vários fatores, como sua ampla distribuição, ocorrência frequente em regiões altamente povoadas e disposição agressiva.
Normalmente uma espécie lenta, a víbora usa camuflagem para proteção. A locomoção é principalmente retilínea , usando as escalas ventrais largas em forma de lagarta e auxiliada por seu próprio peso para tração. Quando agitado, pode recorrer a um típico movimento serpentino de surpreendente velocidade. Embora principalmente terrestres, essas cobras são boas nadadoras e também podem escalar com facilidade; frequentemente eles são encontrados se aquecendo em arbustos baixos. Um espécime foi encontrado 4,6 m acima do solo em uma árvore densamente ramificada.
Se perturbados, eles assobiam alto e continuamente, adotando uma postura defensiva fortemente enrolada com a parte anterior do corpo mantida em forma de "S" tenso. Ao mesmo tempo, eles podem tentar se afastar da ameaça e se proteger. Eles podem atacar repentinamente e rapidamente, para o lado tão facilmente quanto para a frente, antes de retornar rapidamente à posição defensiva, prontos para atacar novamente. Durante um ataque, a força do impacto é tão forte e as longas presas penetram tão profundamente que as presas costumam ser mortas apenas pelo trauma físico. As presas aparentemente podem penetrar em couro macio.

While the Puff Adder is regarded as one of the fastest striking snakes in Africa, the verdict is still out and it will require a fair amount of experimental work before this question is adequately answered. In the USA the Rattlesnake is often said to be the fastest striking snake but experiments showed that some of the harmless snakes strike at about the same speed.
When striking at prey, snakes like the Puff Adder and Rattlesnake miss quite often – even as often as 45% of the times and the number of misses will obviously increase with distance. When a snake like a Puff Adder strikes at a rodent, it usually envenomates its prey and immediately releases it as rodents scratch and bite. The snake then follows the scent trail of its prey with flickering tongue and can distinguish the trail of its prey from that of other rodents as the action of envenomation changes the odour of the trail left by its prey. Smaller rodents or other prey like frogs or lizards are not released. Non-venomous snakes like pythons and house snakes obviously hang onto their prey as do arboreal snakes that eat birds. With back-fanged snakes it is important for the snake to move its prey to the back of the jaw where the fangs are situated to effectively envenomate the meal.
