During the Viking Age, Birkalisten (Birca in medieval sources), on the island of Björkö (literally: "Birch Island") in present-day Sweden, was an important trading center which handled goods from Scandinavia as well as Central and Eastern Europe and the Orient. Björkö is located in Lake Mälaren, 30 kilometers west of contemporary Stockholm, in the municipality of Ekerö. The archaeological sites of Birka and Hovgården, on the neighbouring island of Adelsö, make up an archaeological complex which illustrates the elaborate trading networks of Viking Scandinavia and their influence on the subsequent history of Europe. Generally regarded as Sweden's oldest town, Birka (along with Hovgården) has been a UNESCOWorld Heritage Site since 1993.
A silver ring from a Viking-era grave in Birka is the first ring with Arabic inscription from that era found in Scandinavia.
Birka in lake Mälaren in Sweden existed from mid 700s until 975 when the town was abandoned. In 830 the missionary Ansgar came here to try to Christian the Swedes. Today there is a museum at Birka. Unesco World Heritage site.

Birka and Hovgarden - UNESCO World Heritage Site
Birka and Hovgarden is an unusual UNESCO World Heritage Site. They're a pair of old viking settlements on an island about an hour's ferry ride to the west of Stockholm. They were heavily-populated trading centres from around 850-1100 AD when they were suddenly and mysteriously abandoned. There's some interesting archaeological research happening here, and it provides a lot of detail about vikings - still a people we know surprisingly little about!

But in 2017 a team of Swedish archaeologists under the lead of Charlotte Hedenstierna-Jonson have come to a surprising conclusion. The analysis of the DNA proves that the great warrior was not a man but actually a woman.

Sweden: Visit to Birka Viking Village - A Living History Museum
While Melynda took the day to go hike, the Henry and the boys took a boat tour to the viking village of Birka outside Stockholm. The weather was rainy but with a few glimpses of sun and there was of course easy access to fika. The boys really got a lot out of the museum and guided tour in English and they really enjoyed their own mock battle at the walls. Henry liked the recreated viking village and long boats.

Charlotte is currently preparing a major scientific study to be published early 2019 in answer to the many questions raised. Based on the work of other experts, she and her team need to confirm the existence of women warriors, prove that the weapons found in the grave could be used by a woman, explain why the skeleton bore no sign of injury and show that a woman could lead the Birka garrison.
All of the pieces of the puzzle will be put together in our documentary in order to tell the stry of a fascinating archaeological adventure behind the only female Viking warrior known to date.

TravelingMel (talent) and TravelingFilmmaker (filmmaker) are social media influencers who have dedicated themselves to living a life of full time family travel and worldschooling. They left their home in Montana to explore the world with their two boys so that they could raise better world citizens and have a few adventures along the way.
More nightmares Someone wake me when they're through Stop my lover's ghost from trying to protrude (You're burning, you're burning) It's chaotic, but I've got it You're letter scratched across my throat Like some painter's ink, spilled the canvas soiling parts of me Cover up, cover up, all the fusion's lost I know this sucks but one day you'll meet up I miss the softness of your sound The taste of you left in my mouth Is Mississippi done yet burning? Sick sounds like stomach's stinging I search out, but you cannot be found A red horizon in the south Is Mississippi done yet burning? Most nights bleat every feeling I must get back to you somehow I must get back to you Your shadow Now lies against the moon The skin I touched that once Kissed has come unglued (You're burning, you're burning) It's chaotic, but I've got it More screams than anyone should hear The voice of you stabs in my chest Forged and faithless Cover up, cover up, all the fusion's lost I know this sucks but one day you'll meet up I miss the softness of your sound The taste of you left in my mouth Is Mississippi done yet burning? Sick sounds like stomach's stinging I search out, but you cannot be found A red horizon in the south Is Mississippi done yet burning? Most nights bleat every feeling I must get back to you somehow I must get back to you Darling boy Lift your chin up for me now For my face to see And I am smiling looking down I know you're out of breath You're hit by the way I've left Just hold me tried and true For I'll be waiting Waiting here for you So dim these lights, I won't be found This haunting stops right here and now There's pain and in his eyes of fixed dreaming I'm tired without you, so let it be So dim these lights, I won't be found This haunting stops right here and now There's pain in his eyes of fixed dreaming I'm tired without you, so let it be Is Mississippi done yet burning? Most nights bleat every feeling I must get back to you somehow
