Horschel accepted an athletic scholarship to attend the University of Florida, Gainesville, where he played for coach Buddy Alexander's Florida Gators men's golf team in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) competition from 2006 to 2009. He was a four-time All-American, including three first-team honors, and the Southeastern Conference (SEC) player of the year in 2007 and 2009. He was a 2008 PING southeast all-region selection. He graduated from the University of Florida with a bachelor's degree in sport management in 2009. He represented the United States at the Palmer Cup on two occasions in 2007 and 2008 gaining 4.5 points. He posted a 3–1 record for the victorious 2007 Walker Cup team.
Horschel won the individual medalist honors at the 2006 U.S. Amateur, shooting a two day score of 138 (60-78, −5) at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minnesota. His opening round of 60 was an 18–hole tournament and USGA record. He failed to make it past the third round of match play. He also played in the 2006 U.S. Open, but he missed the cut.

In the third round of the 2022 Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard, Billy Horschel carded a 1-under 71 to get to 7-under for the tournament, placing him in a tie for the lead with Talor Gooch heading into Sunday.

The 2022 edition of the Arnold Palmer Invitational is set to be a humdinger, as a whole host of previous winners look to repeat their past triumphs at the notoriously tricky Bay Hill Club & Lodge in Florida. These include 2018 winner Rory McIlroy who has achieved top 10 finish in each of his last five visits to Bay Hill and Tyrell Hatton who claimed his first and only PGA TOUR win at the event in 2020. With World No.1, Jon Rahm’s last victory coming at the 2021 US Open, the Spaniard will be keen to continue the recent trend of non-US winners at Bay Hill, with five out of the last six victors coming from outside of the United States. With no-one breaking 70 on the final round of last year’s tournament, a fast start might prove pivotal in deciding who comes out on top. Other prominent names to look out for include current FedExCup leader Hideki Matsuyama, 2017 winner Marc Leishman and Scottie Scheffler who arrives in Florida in great form, having won the WM Phoenix Open, followed by a T7 finish at the Genesis Open.

The PGA TOUR heads to Austin, Texas for the only match play event on the calendar. 2021 winner Billy Horschel will return to Austin Country Club hoping to become the first player to defend the match play title since Tiger Woods in 2004, after beating 2022 Arnold Palmer Invitational winner Scottie Scheffler in last year’s final. The World Golf Championships - Dell Technologies Match Play also marks the return of 2020 U.S. Open winner Bryson DeChambeau, who hasn’t played since The Farmers Insurance Open in January due to a wrist injury. The top five players in the world including Jon Rahn, Collin Morikawa, Viktor Hovland, Patrick Cantlay and Scottie Scheffler will all enter the 64-man field which will be split into 16 groups of four players for round-robin play. After round-robin play concludes, the player with the highest amount of points from each group will move onto single-elimination play, where the matches will continue until a champion is crowned.

Horschel accepted an athletic scholarship to attend the University of Florida, Gainesville, where he played for coach Buddy Alexander's Florida Gators men's golf team in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) competition from 2006 to 2009. He was a four-time All-American, including three first-team honors, and the Southeastern Conference (SEC) player of the year in 2007 and 2009. He was a 2008 PING southeast all-region selection. He graduated from the University of Florida with a bachelor's degree in sport management in 2009. He represented the United States at the Palmer Cup on two occasions in 2007 and 2008 gaining 4.5 points. He posted a 3–1 record for the victorious 2007 Walker Cup team.
Horschel won the individual medalist honors at the 2006 U.S. Amateur, shooting a two day score of 138 (60-78, −5) at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minnesota. His opening round of 60 was an 18–hole tournament and USGA record. He failed to make it past the third round of match play. He also played in the 2006 U.S. Open, but he missed the cut.
