Lyrics:
[Verse 1]
She was more like a beauty queen from a movie scene
I said, "Don't mind, but what do you mean, I am the one
Who will dance on the floor in the round?"
She said I am the one who will dance on the floor in the round
She told me her name was Billie Jean
As she caused a scene
Then every head turned with eyes that dreamed of being the one
Who will dance on the floor in the round

People always told me, "Be careful of what you do

THE SHORT FILM
Director: Steve Barron
Primary Production Location: Los Angeles, California
Michael Jackson's short film for "Billie Jean" was the first of three short films produced for recordings from Thriller, which continues its reign as the biggest selling album of all time with worldwide sales in excess of 105 million as of June 1, 2016 and in December, 2015 became the first ever album to be awarded triple diamond status by the RIAA for US sales alone. The ""Billie Jean"" single reached No. 1 in 10 countries in the spring of 1983, including seven consecutive weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100 - becoming the second-highest selling single in America that same year.
"Billie Jean" was certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America on April 4, 1983, and Platinum on February 4, 1989. The song won two Grammy Awards for Best R&B Song and Best R&B Performance - Male, as well as an American Music Award for Favorite Single - Pop/Rock and was also named the Single of the Year on The Village Voice Pazz & Jop critics' poll in 1983.
The short film featured a paparazzo attempting to photograph Jackson as he danced through an urban landscape. A specially created set featured steps and sidewalk tiles that lit up underneath Michael's feet. It is here that fans first saw some of Michael's best-known dance moves, such as spinning and landing on his toes. Many of Michael's steps and mannerisms in the video would become forever associated with The King of Pop.
When the chorus hit.he sprung into this dance that was unlike anything I'd ever seen, director Steve Barron recounted of Jackson's choreography in the video. "It was just extraordinary, instinctive. He pulled it all together and turned it into what we saw.The camera literally steamed up, the eyepiece steamed up, because of my heat from what I was seeing." Barron also recalled the crew breaking into spontaneous applause after Michael finished dancing.
The "Billie Jean" short film made history as the first video by a black artist to be played in heavy rotation on MTV, then in its second year. In 1992, the short film was inducted into the Music Video Producers Hall of Fame. MTV ranked "Billie Jean" as the 35th greatest music video of all time in 1999, one of three entries of Jackson's on the chart alongside "Thriller" and "Beat It."

Lyrics:
[Pre-Chorus]
People always told me, "Be careful of what you do
And don't go around breaking young girls' hearts"
And mother always told me, "Be careful of who you love
And be careful of what you do, 'cause the lie becomes the truth"
[Chorus]
Billie Jean is not my lover
She's just a girl who claims that I am the one
But the kid is not my son
She says I am the one, but the kid is not my son
[Verse 2]
For forty days and for forty nights, the law was on her side
But who can stand when she's in demand?
Her schemes and plans
'Cause we danced on the floor in the round
So take my strong advice, just remember to always think twice
(Don't think twice) Do think twice! (hoo)
She told my baby we'd danced till three, then she looked at me
Then showed a photo of a baby crying, his eyes were like mine (oh no)
'Cause we danced on the floor in the round, baby
[Pre-Chorus]
People always told me, "Be careful of what you do
And don't go around breaking young girls' hearts"
She came and stood right by me
Then the smell of sweet perfume
This happened much too soon
She called me to her room
[Chorus]
Billie Jean is not my lover
She's just a girl who claims that I am the one
But the kid is not my son
Billie Jean is not my lover
She's just a girl who claims that I am the one
But the kid is not my son
She says I am the one, but the kid is not my son
She says I am the one, but the kid is not my son
Billie Jean is not my lover
She's just a girl who claims that I am the one
But the kid is not my son
She says I am the one, but the kid is not my son
She says I am the one (You know what you did)
She says he is my son (Breaking my heart babe)
She says I am the one
[Outro]
Billie Jean is not my lover

Billie Jean is not my lover

20th September 1973: Billie Jean King defeats Bobby Riggs in the 'Battle of the Sexes' tennis match
Bobby Riggs was a leading tennis player in the 1940s, and by the time he retired in 1951 had won six Grand Slam titles. Following his retirement he became a self-described hustler and male chauvinist, and began organising exhibition matches that complimented his love of gambling.
By 1973 Riggs had turned his attention to women’s tennis and began criticising the quality of the players. With media attention growing, he claimed that at age 55 he could still beat any female player, and actively began seeking opponents. Margaret Court, who was the best female player in the world at the time, accepted the challenge and played on Mother’s Day 1973. Was the match between Billie Jean King & Bobby Riggs fixed? Battle of the Sexes 50th anniversary 👀
In 1973, renowned tennis hustler and long-ago men’s number one Bobby Riggs, 55, had already beaten then-women’s number one Margaret Court when he challenged Billie Jean King, 29, to a match. In a momentous feminist rebuke to Riggs and his fellow male chauvinists everywhere, King routed him in the “Battle of the Sexes” at the Houston Astrodome before an international TV audience. A decade ago, investigative reporter Don Van Natta probed intriguing new evidence that Riggs, an inveterate gambler who associated with mob figures, might have thrown the match. For the 50th anniversary of King’s celebrated 9/20/73 triumph, ESPN reprises its report, which provoked controversy, acclaim and anger.

Having easily defeated her 6-2, 6-1 by keeping her off-guard with a combination of drop shots and lobs, Riggs sought another female opponent and focused his attention on Billie Jean King.
King had previously rebuffed Riggs’ challenges but, following Court’s defeat, agreed to play him in a televised match that drew an estimated worldwide audience of 90 million people known as the ‘Battle of the Sexes’ that would deliver $100,000 to the victor. The spectacle was reinforced when King and Riggs entered the Houston Astrodome on a Cleopatra-style litter carried by topless men, and a rickshaw pulled by female models, respectively.
Early in the match Riggs broke King’s serve, something that she later said made her realise that she ‘had to win’ the match in order to preserve the image of women’s tennis. She went on to win in straight sets, 6–4, 6–3, 6–3 and brought significant attention not only to the sport of women’s tennis but also to sexual equality in general.

King discusses how she used tennis as a platform for her life’s work to fight for equal rights, her role in the birth of professional women’s tennis in 1971, the importance of Title IX, and explains why she decided to play Bobby Riggs in 1973’s Battle of the Sexes - “It wasn’t about tennis, it was about history and social change.”
Billie Jean King was born Billie Jean Moffitt on November 22, 1943 in Long Beach, California to parents Bill, a firefighter, and Betty, a homemaker. King played basketball and softball as a child. Her younger brother, Randy, went on to pitch in Major League Baseball. King began playing tennis at the age of 11 and immediately fell in love with the sport. In 1958, King won her age bracket in the Southern California championship. She first garnered international attention in 1961, when she and Karen Hantze Susman became the youngest pair to win the Wimbledon doubles title. King attended California State University, Los Angeles from 1961-1964 and competed in tennis tournaments while also working as a tennis instructor. In 1965, she married law student Larry King. In her tennis career she won 39 Grand Slam titles and led the fight for equal pay in tennis. Known for beating Bobby Riggs in 1973’s “Battle of the Sexes,” King also helped establish the Women’s Tennis Association, the organization that oversees women’s professional tennis. King was publicly outed as a lesbian in 1981 and immediately lost all her endorsement deals. After the news broke, her representatives urged her not to confirm it, but King refused to deny her lesbianism. She and her husband divorced in 1987. King then began a relationship with her current partner, Illana Kloss, a fellow professional tennis player. King retired from competition in 1983. King coached the U.S. Fed Cup team from 1995-1996 and 1998-2003, bringing home victories in 1999 and 2000. In 1990, Life magazine named King one of the “100 Most Important Americans” of the twentieth century. In 2009, President Barack Obama presented King with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, for championing the rights of women and the LGBTQ community. King and Kloss founded the Billie Jean King Leadership Initiative in 2014, a non-profit organization that seeks to rid workplaces of discrimination based on race, gender, and sexuality.
From the 2013 PBS Documentary “Makers: Women Who Make America”, examines how women have helped shape America over the past 150 years, striving for a full and fair share of political power and economic opportunity.

Billie Jean King: "Coming Out"
King talks about her experience of being outed, its consequences, and having the courage to be honest.
Billie Jean King first learned tennis in the late 1950s on the public courts in Long Beach, California. The game ultimately took her farther than she could possibly have imagined. King's hard-charging style of play won her no fewer than 39 Grand Slam titles. She played largely against her own towering standards, later reflecting, "I'm a perfectionist much more than I'm a super competitor. And there's a big difference there." By the end of the 1960s, King was already speaking out against a longstanding—and, at the time, growing—disparity in prize money awarded to men and women. Her drive for equal opportunities helped establish the Virginia Slims Series and the Women's Tennis Association....

Her drive for equal opportunities helped establish the Virginia Slims Series and the Women's Tennis Association. King presided over the creation of the WTA when she organized a 1973 pre-Wimbledon meeting to unite all of women's tennis in one tour. Of course, all of her work on behalf of women's opportunity and equality in competition came together in one beautiful moment when she beat former men's champion Bobby Riggs in 1973's famous "Battle of the Sexes" match. In 1974, King co-founded World TeamTennis, a pioneering co-ed professional league, and the Women's Sports Foundation.
