Sad & Selfless: The Duality of Bill Dauterive | King of the Hill

I’ve done a lot of King of the Hill videos now, and there is one character analysis that’s been requested ENDLESSLY since I started. Bill Dauterive. And for good reason! He’s a super interesting character with a ton of depth, and there are so many Bill focused episodes and stories to dive into. I think you’d be hard pressed to find someone who didn’t think of the word “pathetic” when talking about Bill Dauterive. BUT, through watching a couple dozen Bill episodes I found that while, yes, Bill is incredibly pathetic, he’s also by far the most selfless character in the series. So join me as we explore how Bill might be the kindest character in King of the Hill.

You say something about my lawn, Dauterive?
King of The Hill - S05E19: Hank's Back Story
*Hank*
Oh, man. Not my back again.
*Bobby*
Mom, how come Dad gets to stand at the breakfast table... and I never get to wear my cape?
*Peggy*
Because your father is afraid of doctors. Now, Hank, according to my count... this is the fifth or eighth time that your back has gone out this year. Will you make an appointment already?
*Hank*
No. My back's just stiff from training for the mower race. I spent three hours last night working on my starts. See, if I can beat Boomhauer off the line, he'll fall apart mentally.
*Peggy*
What is it with you mower-racers and your stubborn code of honor? I see a doctor whenever I'm incapacitated and it does not make me any less of a man.
*Hank*
I am not incapacitated. Enough said.
*Bill*
There. Just take it...
