Emmanuel "Manu" N'Djoké Dibango (born 12 December 1933) is a Cameroonian saxophonist and vibraphone player. He developed a musical style fusing jazz, funk and traditional Cameroonian music. His father was a member of the Yabassi ethnic group, though his mother was a Duala. He is best known for his 1972 single "Soul Makossa".
Biography
Early life
Dibango was born in Douala, Cameroon. His father, Michel Manfred N'Djoké Dibango was a civil servant. The son of a farmer, he met his wife travelling by pirogue to her residence, Douala. A literate woman, she was a fashion designer, running her own small business. Both her ethnicity, the Duala, and his, the Yabassi, viewed this union of different ethnic groups with some disdain. Emmanuel had no siblings, although he had a stepbrother from his father's previous marriage who was four years older than he was. In Cameroon, one's ethnicity is dictated by their fathers, though he wrote in his autobiography, Three Kilos of Coffee, that he has "never been able to identify completely with either of [his] parents."
The Great Lakes Storm of 1913, historically referred to as the "Big Blow," the "Freshwater Fury," or the "White Hurricane," was a blizzard with hurricane-force winds that devastated the Great Lakes Basin in the Midwestern United States and the Canadian province of Ontario from November 7 through November 10, 1913. The storm was most powerful on November 9, battering and overturning ships on four of the five Great Lakes, particularly Lake Huron. Deceptive lulls in the storm and the slow pace of weather reports contributed to the storm's destructiveness.
The deadliest and most destructive natural disaster ever to hit the lakes, the Great Lakes Storm killed more than 250people, destroyed 19 ships, and stranded 19 others. The financial loss in vessels alone was nearly US $5million (or about $119,714,000 in today's dollars). This included about $1million at current value in lost cargo totalling about 68,300tons, such as coal, iron ore, and grain.
The storm, an extratropical cyclone, originated as the convergence of two major storm fronts, fueled by the lakes' relatively warm waters—a seasonal process called a "November gale". It produced 90mph (145km/h) wind gusts, waves over 35feet (11m) high, and whiteoutsnowsqualls. Analysis of the storm and its impact on humans, engineering structures, and the landscape led to better forecasting and faster responses to storm warnings, stronger construction (especially of marine vessels), and improved preparedness.

SONG FACTS: A native of Cameroon, Manu Dibango has enjoyed a long career as a musician and songwriter, developing a fusion of Jazz and African musical styles. This song which was released in 1972, came early in Dibango's career, and was introduced to American listeners by the legendary New York City radio DJ Frankie Crocker on FM's WBLS radio station.
This song made the US Top 40 only briefly, but later became notable for 3 reasons. The first is its refrain, "Ma-ma-se, ma-ma-sa, ma-ma-kossa," which Michael Jackson borrowed for his 1983 hit "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'," but without Dibango's permission. Dibango eventually reached an out-of-court settlement with Jackson over the lyrics. Dibango also had filed a lawsuit against Rihanna. When Rihanna came calling in 2007, asking to sample Jackson on her song "Don't Stop the Music," Jackson agreed – allegedly without contacting DiBango. https://www.theguardian.com/music/2009/feb/04/rihanna-michael-jackson-manu-dibango. The third reason is the genré, and the pop culture phenomenon, that the song set in motion.
"Soul Makossa" was so popular as a dance song that its style began to be emulated and further developed by American dance musicians - and eventually took on a life of its own. As a result, this is now widely regarded as the first Disco record. Whenever it was dropped on Dance floors in New York it lead to "dance battles." Blacks, Italians, Latino's and Whites couldn't get enough of this groove and strutted their stuff when this monster tune came on.

The Great Lakes Storm of 1913, also known as the White Hurricane sank 12 freighters. The worst of the storm hit Lake Huron and generated winds that exceeded 90 miles per hour and waves of over 35 feet. These conditions made survival almost impossible for even the largest vessels and many of those that didn't sink grounded in the storm, ironically saving them in most cases. SS Henry B. Hawgood and SS Howard M. Hanna Jr. were two of the lucky ones who narrowly survived the storm of the century.

The Great Lakes Hurricane of 1913 was one of the worst November storms to hit the area on record. Over the course of the blizzard, 12 ships were lost with all hands, and dozens more were stranded. The stories of the SS Charles S. Price launched in 1910, and the SS Regina, launched in 1907, two victims of the hurricane, somehow became entwined in a mystery that baffled the area at the time and still leaves unanswered questions today.

Watch Disasters of the Century Season 3 Episode 29 Great Lakes Storm on Bad Day HQ
The Great Lakes Storm of 1913, historically referred to as the "Big Blow," the "Freshwater Fury," or the "White Hurricane," was a blizzard with hurricane-force winds that devastated the Great Lakes Basin in the Midwestern United States and the province of Ontario in Canada from November 7 through November 10, 1913. The storm was most powerful on November 9, battering and overturning ships on four of the five Great Lakes, particularly Lake Huron. Deceptive lulls in the storm and the slow pace of weather reports contributed to the storm's destructiveness.

I've created this video to share my observations so others can enjoy and contemplate.

This video is a story about my beach and its connection to the Great Storm of 1913. I'm not an expert on maritime matters but I feel certain I've discovered something that helps shed light on one of the great mysteries of that storm. I've created this video to share my observations so others can enjoy and contemplate. I'm also hoping for review and scrutiny by those qualified on the subject so this may one day become fact or be explained differently. Please accept my contribution.
Known as The Big Blow, The Freshwater Fury, and The White Hurricane, this blizzard packed hurricane force winds which was the deadliest and most destructive disaster ever to strike the Great Lakes Region.
