Betchworth Castle is a mostly crumbled ruin of a fortified medieval stone house with some tall, two-storey corners strengthened in the 18th century, in the north of the semi-rural parish of Brockham. It is built on a sandstone spur overlooking the western bank of the Mole in Surrey in England. The ruin is a Scheduled Ancient Monument and is in the lowest category of listed architecture, Grade II, 1.2 miles (1.9km) due east of Dorking railway station in Dorking and 4 miles (6.4km) due west of Reigate. Although close to the river and edge of the course it is surrounded by "Betchworth Park" Golf Course named after the village 1 mile (1.6km) east.
History
Medieval period
Betchworth (or Beechworth among other forms) Castle was the seat of the manor of West Betchworth and was held by Richard de Tonbridge at the time of the Domesday Survey. It started as an earthwork fortress built by Robert Fitz Gilbert in the 11th century. It was granted in 1373 to Richard FitzAlan, 3rd or 10th Earl of Arundel. His son Sir John FitzAlan, Earl Marshall of England, turned it into a stone castle in 1379. It passed by marriage to Sir Thomas Browne, Sheriff of Kent, who in 1448 rebuilt it as a fortified house.
Betchworth is a village and civil parish in the Mole Valley district of Surrey, England. The village centre is on the north bank of the River Mole and south of the A25 road almost 3 miles (4.8km) east of Dorking and 3 miles (4.8km) west of Reigate. London is 19.5 miles (31.4km) north of the village. Service sector occupations dominate Betchworth's economy – its station and road links make it a part of the London commuter belt – combined with crop agriculture and services for a relatively large retired proportion of the population. A former lime quarry, rebuilt manor house and Grade I-listed church are within its boundaries.
History
Etymology
State records show the name as Becesworde, (11th century), Beceswrde, (12th century), Bechesworth, (13th century).
Pre Roman settlement
Bronze Age artefacts have been found at Betchworth only since 1944. No Roman villas, farms or camps have been found.

Exploring BETCHWORTH CASTLE in THE SURREY HILLS
In this Vlog, I visit the ancient ruin of Betchworth Castle in the Surrey Hills. Overlooking the nearby River Mole, Betchworth Castle was originally an 11th Century structure founded by Richard Fitz Gilbert but the present ruin is of a medieval fortified house built in the 14th Century by Sir John Fitzalan. As well as talking about the history of this place, I recount a couple of Ghost Stories associated with the place and attempt a bit of Dowsing!

Betchworth Castle (ruins)
The fortified house of West Betchworth was traditionally home to the lords of that manor. Betchworth Castle was built in the 11th century by Robert Fitz Gilbert to be used as an earthwork fortress. In 1379 Sir John Fitzalan turned it into a stone castle. in the 15th century the castle was rebuilt by Sir Thomas Browne.
In 1798 the estate stretched from the zigzag at Box Hill to beyond Blackbrook. Sir John Soane was commissioned by the owner, Henry Peters to design alterations to the house and park; the stable block remains but converted into houses.
Betchworth Castle Ruin The house was bought by Henry Hope to add to his Deepdene estate in 1834, and much of the masonry was removed for work elsewhere. The Castle was allowed to collapse to create a picturesque ruin.

In 2008 Mole Valley District Council sold the ruin for £1.00 to a Betchworth resident Martin Higgins who is planning to breathe life back into the castle.
The castle is said to be haunted by a black dog (death dog) that prowls the ruins at night, also the grounds of the castle (Betchworth Park golf course) is haunted by evil or unexplained things, one[who?] has photos to prove this. Owner "Lord Hope" (Either a mistaken reference to Henry Thomas Hope or his grandson Francis Pelham-Clinton-Hope, 8th Duke of Newcastle who was forced to take that name by his grandmother) - (the latter became the lord of the manor of Brockham rather than owner of Deepdene) he chased and killed an escaping convict with his sword. He later found out that it was in fact his own son he had killed. Lord Hope is said to now walk around the ruins in regret.
(21/08/2014 - UPDATE info from owner re-stone slabs in driveway)
Work on the terrace wall starts next week. The stone slabs come from a factory in Preston, not local at all. They are only being stored temporarily on the drive.

I am out exploring the hidden Gems, Oddities and English Villages in the County of Surrey and in this Vlog, I visit the ancient Village of Betchworth in the Surrey Hills. The Village is on the North Bank of the River Mole and is South of the A25 road between Dorking and Reigate. A former Lime Quarry, rebuilt Manor House, Medieval Castle and the Grade I* Listed St Michael’s Church are all within its boundaries and Bronze Age artefacts have been found but only since 1944.

Where I grew up, in Brockham, everyone knew about BetchworthCastle... My parents even had a local map on our living room wall, so I couldn’t fail to notice the ruins of this early medieval castle in parkland.
