Getting Wood/Lumber Dead Flat with a Hand Plane
*Support What We Do at The Katz-Moses Store* https://lddy.no/stih
On today’s woodworking skill builder I show you how to flatten a board with a hand plane. I also show you how to make VERY cheap and easy winding sticks. Flattening by hand is a right of passage for woodworkers and great exercise hahaha. Whether your lumber is wider than your planer, you have a giant slab, a work bench or you just like to use hand tools, this is a must have ability. Let me know what you’d like to see next. Thanks for watching! Please like, comment and subscribe. Cheers!

What Hand Plane Should You Buy?
Get the Katz-Moses Magnetic Dovetail Jig here: https://lddy.no/stiz
(Hand Plane Links Below) Today we talk about which woodworking planes you should buy. As always I subscribe to the buy once cry once philosophy of buying tools. Spending more will get you better planes but that doesn’t mean you can’t get great results from less expensive planes or by refurbishing old ones. I suggest you start slow and buy what you can afford. Then as your skills and collection grows you can wait and save up for the really good ones. Let me know in the comments what joint you’d like to see next week. Thanks for watching! Please like, comment and subscribe. Cheers!

The smoothing planes, the jointer, the jack plane, these have a few more parts and pieces in them, and it's useful to look at these, too, just to understand how they work. The one extra piece that these have is a chip breaker on top. That's an extra piece of metal that sits on top of the blade. The blade's on the bottom here. Chip breaker’s on top. The purpose of that piece is twofold. It's to hold the blade in a more rigid way in the plane, because it's a longer blade and it keeps the blade from chattering. The other purpose of this is to prevent tear-out. When this is running along the wood the blade's cutting the wood, and there's a tendency for the wood to tear out. This part of the assembly here prevents that from happening.
Once you get this set up properly and in the plane the way to use these is very similar to the block plane except these planes have a two handed operation. You can see there's a knob on the front and handle on the back. Because these planes are bigger and they're doing harder work we'll start on this edge, but they generally are doing more difficult work on the face of a board.
You have to really put your whole body into using these planes. I recommend you stand with your feet spread apart. Put most of your weight on the hand holding the knob. When you're ready to go you're just going to rock from your back foot to your front foot, and use your body weight to push this plane forward. Now the goal is, of course, try to keep this as level as possible as you're going across the wood with some pressure down on the front. The last part of this procedure is when you get to the end lighten up a bit on your hand holding this knob, because you don't want to round over the end of the board.
So, let's try it. Let's do a demonstration. You can see if you just have a nice follow through and you lift up at the end, rock from one foot to the other, you get a nice, smooth shaving. That's really your goal is to see ribbons of thin wood like this coming off. You can see the result on the wood. It's just a really clean, glassy surface, way better than a saw or sandpaper could do. That's one of the real benefits of learning how to use these planes is that you can pretty much throw out your sandpaper after you master these.
Now, on an edge that's pretty easy. Let's look at doing a face, because that's the other use of the smoothing and jack planes. If you don't have a vise and a workbench style thing like this you can just clamp your boards down onto the table. It's pretty easy.
One of the big functions of this plane, like I was saying before, is to flatten out the boards. Often you'll have twists in boards, and one corner might be higher than another. Let's say these are two high corners and the board's twisted. You can't really do any work with this on the machines until it's nice and flat. So, flattening it down is one really important function of these. The way to do it is just how we were doing that edge. I'm just going to rock into the motion of shaving that down, and you'll have a much flatter board.
Just to wrap up, these types of planes, you've got the smoothing plane, the jack plane, and the jointer, may not be something you'll purchase right away as a beginner. But, down the road, you'll definitely want to get familiar with these.
That's all for planes.

Cheers!

Tom demonstrated several types of hand plane, including bench planes, shouldering planes, and block planes. He also showed a sharpening stone for sharpening plane blades. The planes and sharpening stones are available at hardware stores, home centers, and specialty woodworking stores.
Shopping List for How to Use a Hand Plane:
Machine oil [https://amzn.to/2Luyc5N], used to lubricate sharpening stone
Wood block [https://amzn.to/2LNG4OY], used to prevent tear-out in end grain
Tools List for How to Use a Hand Plane:
Bench planes [https://amzn.to/2Lt52nD]
Specialty planes [https://amzn.to/2O0LAjG]
Block planes [https://amzn.to/31mEJVJ]
Sharpening stone [https://amzn.to/34LulJ6], for sharpening plane irons
Clamp [https://amzn.to/30660dG], used to secure wood block to workpiece
Steps for How to Use a Hand Plane:
1. Bench planes are used to flatten and smooth broad wood surfaces and narrow edges.
2. Long bench planes are best suited for smoothing very long surfaces and edges.
3. Specialty planes, such as a shoulder plane or rabbet plane, have plane irons (blades) that come flush with the edges of the tool.
4. Block planes are compact, versatile, and ideally suited for smoothing edges, small surfaces, and end grain.
5. Rotate the adjusting nut to control the depth of cut.
6. Pivot the lateral adjustment lever to square up the iron to the plane body.
7. Release the iron cap and extract the plane iron from the plane.
8. Test the sharpness of an iron by standing it on your thumbnail. If the iron slides off, it needs sharpening.
9. To sharpen a plane iron, start by applying machine oil to the coarse side of a sharpening stone.
10. Set the iron against the oiled stone with its beveled end facing down.
11. Tilt up the iron until its bevel is flush with the stone. Maintain that exact angle as you slowly rub the iron across the stone in a circular motion.
12. After a minute or two, flip over the iron and place it flat against the stone. Rub the iron back and forth to remove any burr from the back surface.
13. Next, flip the stone over to reveal its smooth surface. Apply oil and repeat the sharpening process.
14. Then raise the iron just a fraction of an inch, and make two or three passes across the stone.
15. Repeat the thumbnail test of Step 8 to check the iron's sharpness.
16. When planing the narrow edge of a board, inspect the direction of the wood grain on the side of the board.
17. Always plane in the direction of the up-angling wood grain. Don't plane against it.
18. Adjust the throat (mouth) of the plane to increase or decrease the gap between the plane iron and the bed of the plane. The proper adjustment will help prevent tearing out the grain.
19. Decrease the gap when planing end grain, and increase it when planing edge grain or making deep cuts.
20. When planing end grain, prevent tear-out by planing in from both ends toward the middle.
21. Another technique is to clamp a sacrificial wood block to the end of the board prior to planing. Then, any tear-out will occur in the block, not the board.

The hands are ranked as follows from lowest to highest:
High card: If nobody has a pair or better, then the highest card wins. If multiple people tie for the highest card, they look at the second highest, then the third highest etc. High card is also used to break ties when the high hands both have the same type of hand: pair, flush, straight, etc…
Pair: two cards of identical rank with three distinct cards.
2 pair: Two distinct sets of 2 cards of the same rank and a 5th card. The highest pair wins ties. If both hands have the same high pair, the second pair wins.
3 of a kind: Three cards of the same rank, matched with two cards that are not a pair. When multiple players have a 3 of a kind, the highest 3 of a kind wins.
Straight: 5 cards in sequential order, such as 4-5-6-7-8. An ace may either be high or low. Straight may not 'wraparound' the ends such as Queen-King-Ace-2-3. When straights tie, the highest number in a straight wins.
Flush: 5 cards where all of the cards are the same suit.
Full House: 5 cards containing a three of a kind and a pair. Ties are broken first by the three of a kind, then pair.
Four of a kind: 4 cards of identical rank with a 5th distinct card.
Straight Flush: 5 cards in the same suit that are in sequential order. Similar to a straight, they may not wrap around.
Royal Flush: 5 card straight flush with ace high.

Our poker tutorial is a great way to learn the card game loved by millions.
Hey, I'm Nicky Numbers, a Professional Poker Player, whose going to talk to you today, about the best starting hands in poker. Now, when most people are talking about poker, they mean No Limit Hold Em. The best starting hands in that game are, big cards, and big pairs. So, hands like Ace, King. Especially Ace, King, suited are incredibly valuable.
This is a true, premium hand. Another example would be pocket Queens. Any pocket pair of Tens, or higher, is going to be a premium one. Hands like Ace, Queen, are also incredibly valuable, because they flop top pair regularly. Ace, King, for example, flops top pair, 30 percent of the time. Big pocket pairs have tremendous value because often they're an over pair to the board, and when they're not an over pair to the board, sometimes they flop sets, which are really strong hands. A set is when you have a pocket pair, and then a third card that matches these two, comes on the board, so, you have three of a kind. Now, these are traditionally thought of as the categories of hands that are premium holdings. Pocket Tens are better, Ace, King, Ace, Queen. You only get dealt one of these hands, 4.7 percent of the time. That's about once, every other round, if there's ten people at your table. So, these are infrequent occurrences. If this is all you play, you're going to end up playing way too tight. There are other hands that also play well in No Limit Hold Em, and have tremendous value. And the deeper stacked you get, meaning the more big blinds you have, the better these other hands will play.
Hands like pocket Deuces. A pocket pair is going to flop two pair, or better, about 12 percent of the time. It's an incredibly powerful hand, and the most likely hand of any, to flop a monster, pocket pairs. Another valuable hand is suited connectors, cards that are directly connected to each other, and are of the same suit. So, they're sequential, like, Six, Seven. Another example, would be a suited one gapper, like Seven, Five, or, a suited two gapper, like Seven, Four. Cards that have no gaps, and are directly connected, have one gap, or two gaps, and are suited, have tremendous play ability in No Limit Hold Em. For example, a true suited connector, like, Four, Five suited through Jack, Ten suited, is going to hit the flop to make a big hand, or a draw of Eight outs or more, about a quarter of the time. On the surface, it looks like you only have Seven high, but these cards work tremendously well together, and create a synergy that results in the hands having a lot of value in their ability to continue passed the flop. Another example, is a suited Ace, like Ace, Six, or Ace, Deuce.
These cards work in a very similar way to suited connectors, suited one gappers, and suited two gappers. Basically, you want to play hands that are able to continue pass the flop, regularly. And when I say continue pass the flop, regularly, I mean continue pass the flop in a comfortable way. Imagine having a hand on the flop, and your opponent makes a bet, and you're comfortable continuing to call, or raise. Imagine being on the flop, and making a bet, and your opponent raises you. And you're able to comfortably continue by calling that raise, or, even re-raising them back. That's what you're looking for when you're picking hands, pre-flop. Hands that interact with the flop in multiple ways, and are often able to continue passed the flop, and regularly go to show down.
