Energy storage systems capture surplus energy during times of high production/low demand and store it for use during times of low production/high demand. There are various options available for energy storage like pumped hydro, compressed air storage, mechanical flywheels and of course Battery Energy Storage System popularly known as BESS.
Largely BESS uses Li-ion batteries but there are other chemistry batteries available. BESS can either be used as:
A standalone system where it’s connected to grid for the charging and discharging requirements.
A system coupled with renewable energy source. 04 configurations used with PV-Solar system are:
Independent
DC Coupled (flexible charging)
DC Coupled (PV-only charging)
AC Coupled
AC coupled configuration is typically used for existing PV-Solar systems for providing augmentation of BESS, by adding second inverter and battery containers. DC coupled systems are more common for new PV+Storage installations.
BESS as a system consists of:
Battery modules connected in series or parallel for required capacity.
Storage enclosure with thermal management.
Power Conversion System (PCS)
Battery Management System (BMS)
Energy Management System (EMS).
Battery applications are categorized into Energy and Power applications. Energy applications are at slower timescale whereas power applications transpire on a must faster timescale.
Each BESS has a rated energy capacity, the amount of energy stored in the battery, in kWh or MWh as well as rated power capacity, total instantaneous discharge capability, in kW or MW. Most manufacturers provide Depth of Discharge (DOD) i.e., the percentage of battery discharged relative to overall capacity of battery. For 100kWh battery, with DOD 80%, shouldn’t be used more than 80kWh from the battery without recharging.
BESS as an energy source needs to be monitored and controlled. Nor-Cal facilitates integration of SCADA and EMS solutions for monitoring and controlling BESS functioning per the site requirements.
