Exploring the remains of Berwick castle
The castle was founded in the 12th century by the Scottish king David 1. In 1296-1298, the English king Edward 1 had the castle rebuilt and the town fortified, before it was returned to Scotland.

Tantallon Castle, North Berwick, East Lothian, Scotland
Tantallon Castle is a ruined mid-14th-century fortress, located 5 kilometres east of North Berwick, in East Lothian, Scotland. It sits atop a promontory opposite the Bass Rock, looking out onto the Firth of Forth. The last medieval curtain wall castle to be constructed in Scotland, Tantallon comprises a single wall blocking off the headland, with the other three sides naturally protected by sea cliffs.
Tantallon was built in the mid 14th century by William Douglas, 1st Earl of Douglas. It was passed to his illegitimate son, George Douglas, later created Earl of Angus, and despite several sieges, it remained the property of his descendants for much of its history. It was besieged by King James IV in 1491, and again by his successor James V in 1527, when extensive damage was done. Tantallon...

Berwick Upon Tweed is a fabulous destination for a day out if you're in North East England. Full of tourist attractions, Berwick offers everything from a thriving town centre high street to amazing historic town walls and one of the most scenic river walks in the UK.
The town has passed between England and Scotland on so many occasions and been the location of some really violent and historic moments!
Steeped in history, Berwick on Tweed is now a tourism destination with lots to see and do here and plenty of history to explore from Berwick Town Walls to the remains of Berwick Castle. Other attractions include Berwick Barracks and Berwick Town Hall which are worth a visit!
The Royal Tweed Bridge over the River Tweed is another fascinating feature here worth seeing if you're in the town.
Berwick remains a traditional market town and also has some notable architectural features, in particular its medieval town walls, its Georgian Town Hall, its Elizabethan ramparts, and Britain's earliest barracks buildings
Berwick, along with former fishing village Tweedmouth and the seaside resort of Spittal, historically owes its livelihood to the river. A hub for exports, a centre of a thriving salmon fishing industry from the sixteenth century and a boat-building town from the eighteenth century, it has stone harbour walls and a cobbled quayside beneath the massive ramparts.
The definitive border town, focus of many centuries of warfare between England and Scotland, Berwick has perfectly preserved Elizabethan fortifications, the most complete town defences of its type in Northern Europe, and eighteenth century Barracks that were the first in Britain to be purpose-built. In 2015 Berwick celebrated 900 years of history and heritage with exhibitions, living history, and a programme of exciting events.
Built between and around these iconic historic sites are Georgian buildings of great character, linked by cobbled lanes and narrow archways. This is a town packed with interest and tradition, and even boasts a building which leans even more than the Tower of Pisa - a Granary, now restored as a youth hostel, art gallery and bistro

Throughout the centuries, in particular during the Medieval and Tudor period the relationship between England and the Scottish was strained. War was a common occurrence between the two, and different Kings would try to conquer different territories along the border region. King of England Edward I today as remembered as a feared military leader and also as a man who built many castles that shaped the nation, however in 1296 he inflicted a barbaric massacre on a border Scottish town that shocked those across Europe.
Berwick Upon Tweed is a border town, and today is the last English town before you reach Scotland. But in the latter 13th century it was a thriving port, and Edward I sought to take the town for himself. It changed hands between the Scots and English a number of times, but Edward would brutally order a shocking attack on not just the garrison inside the castle, but on the civilians inside the Town. He ordered his English Army to force their way into the town and massacre anyone they saw in sight.
Estimates suggest that over 7000 people were murdered in cold blood by the English, many of these were even slaughtered inside Churches after they fled to them to claim sanctuary. Edward would completely sack the town, and it was said that the streets ran red with blood. In fact the bloodshed was so much that the mills along the River Tweed turned with blood. Some estimates even suggest that 17000 were massacred including women and children.

There really is a castle at Haggerston Castle Holiday Park, and now we have a rooftop bar up there for you to take the weight off your feet and refuel. This park is the perfect place for all the family, with the Oodles amusement centre and soft play, an Inflatable Arena, and there's an Aerial Adventure ropes course and a mini version, too. Plus, parents and grandparents will enjoy strolling around our lakes, soaking in our heated pool and you can all share a lovely family meal in the Mash and Barrel restaurant, or takeaway from Chopstix and others.

Berwick

If you would like to support me, I am raising money for surgery in Spain:
https://gofund.me/045d82ea
-----
My wife and daughter were occupied with their friends who had come to spend the day with them. As I was at a loose end, I took the opportunity to explore Berwick in a bit more detail than past visits.
In this walk I am following the Royal Geographical Society's Discovering Britain Walk. More details can be found at:
https://www.discoveringbritain.org/activities/north-east-england/walks/berwick-upon-tweed.html
Part 1 Covers the old Medieval castle from the 12th century up until the early 16th century.
Part 2 Covers the Elizabethan fortifications of the town from the latter 16th century and the later improvements in the 18th, 19th and, 20th centuries.

Tantallon saw action in the First Bishops' War in 1639, and again during Oliver Cromwell's invasion of Scotland in 1651, when it was once more severely damaged. It was sold by the Marquis of Douglas in 1699 to Hew Dalrymple, Lord North Berwick and the ruin is today in the care of Historic Environment Scotland.

In THE SIEGE OF BERWICK: key dates in scottish history, Scottish history tour guides Bruce Fummey talks questions of Scottish independence with one of the most horrific tales from Scotlands past. One of the first actions of the Scottish wars of independence and one of the most brutal massacres in Scottish history.

Scotland History Tours is here for people who want to learn about Scottish history and get ideas for Scottish history tours. I try to make videos which tell you tales from Scotland's past and give you information about key dates in Scottish history and historical places to visit in Scotland. Not all videos are tales from Scotland's history, some of them are about men from Scotland's past or women from Scotland's past. Basically the people who made Scotland. From April 2020 onward I've tried to give ideas for historic days out in Scotland. Essentially these are days out in Scotland for adults who are interested in historical places to visit in Scotland.
As one of Scotland history tour guides people ask: Help me plan a Scottish holiday, or help me plan a Scottish vacation of your from the US. So from April 2020 I've tried to give a bit of history, but some places of interest in Scotland as well.

Tantallon castle
Two miles east of North Berwick we can find Tantallon castle.
William Douglas, a nobleman, showing off his status, built this castle in 1350.
Sitting on the edge of cliffs, facing the beautiful Bass rock.
the castle is now a ruin, managed by Historic Environment Scotland who has installed walkways that allow visitors to explore the castle walls along with information panels that explain the castle’s fascinating history.
The top of the curtain wall is the best spot to watch the seabird colonies that call this part of East Lothian their home, and if you want to explore the coastline to see more wildlife, it is just a short walk to Seacliff beach.
