The station itself was designed by Ian Ritchie Architects and was originally intended to have a multi-storey office building sitting on top. London Underground have yet to realise this second phase of the scheme.
Like its extension counterparts, Bermondsey station was designed with a futuristic style in mind by Ian Ritchie Architects. Extensively using natural light, it is built in both a cut-and-cover and tube design. The cut-and-cover section is supported by latticed concrete beams allowing light to penetrate to the platform level. The escalators down to this area are lined by flat concrete with a high ceiling to give a feeling of spaciousness. The bored section is encased with metal to keep in line the futuristic and metallic theme of the extension. As with all other deep level stations on the Jubilee Line Extension, Bermondsey station has platform screen doors for passenger safety and comfort.
Bermondsey may be understood to mean 'Beornmund's island'; but, while "Beornmund" represents an Old English personal name, identifying an individual once associated with the place, the element "-ey" represents Old English "eg", for "island", "piece of firm land in a fen", or simply a "place by a stream or river". Thus Bermondsey need not have been an island as such in the Anglo-Saxon period, and is as likely to have been a higher, drier spot in an otherwise marshy area. Though Bermondsey's earliest written appearance is in the Domesday Book of 1086, it also appears in a source which, though surviving only in a copy written at Peterborough Abbey in the 12th century, claiming "ancient rights" unproven purporting to be a transcripton of a letter of Pope Constantine (708-715), in which he grants privileges to a monastery at Vermundesei, then in the hands of the abbot of Medeshamstede, as Peterborough was known at the time.
The 1983 by-election was one of the most bitterly contested by-elections in the United Kingdom as it involved Bob Mellish, the retired Labour MP, running a highly personal and homophobic campaign against the Labour candidate, Peter Tatchell. The result was the election of Simon Hughes as a Liberal in a former Labour stronghold.
Can't quite believe this has happened. Thought I'd share this special moment with you guys.

The New Tube Train For London is Here!
The Piccadilly Line is getting New Tube Trains! Built by Siemens, they'll be in passenger service in 2025. We got an invite out to their test track acility in Germany to go and have a ride on the first one off of the production line.
A total of 94 trains are on order, with half of them being made at a new Siemens factory at Goole in Yorkshire. I made a visit to the Goole factory last year, which you can watch here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bCMZqprWIU4
NOTE
We were all restricted to seeing just the front carriage of the train, which meant we couldn't go and see one of the shorter carriages, nor check out the accessible area of the train which we would've liked to have seen.

Spiffing London Walks - Bermondsey, Maltby Street Market & Old Operating Theatre
In this most spiffing walk around Bermondsey Joolz goes to the Old Operating Theatre Museum and Herb Garret. A garret is a liveable space in an attic and this one was discovered above this church having been sealed up in the 19th century. You can attend a demonstration of how the operating theatre worked and see all the wonderful medical devices.
Nearby is Guy's Hospital with an alcove one belonging to the medieval London Bridge, containing a statue of John Keats.
The we go up to Bermondsey Street with all its cafes and the surrounding area with its old leather factories and tanneries.
If you are feeling hungry you can also go up the Maltby Street Market.

The Blue in Bermondsey
In the heart of Bermondsey sits one of London's oldest street markets - the Blue - named after the 'Blue Anchor' pub at its centre, which has roots tracing back to 1695.
Assemble and Takeshi Architects teamed up with various local makers to inject a new lease of life into this historic square. Under the title of 'Made in Bermondsey' they involved the local community throughout the design and build process, creating a public space that is both for the community, and by the community.

Bermondsey is a district within the London Borough of Southwark in south-east London. It is surrounded by Rotherhithe, Deptford, Walworth and Peckham.
By the late 19th century, Bermondsey had become synonymous with manufacturing. From 1866, Bermondsey was known as Biscuit Town owing to the presence of Peek, Frean and Co.
Bermondsey has always been associated with the tough working classes but has evolved in recent decades into a mixture of local authority housing and luxury apartments. It now contains some of the Capital’s priciest properties, particularly when overlooking the Thames.
By the 19th century, this part of London had become a slum and was notoriously dangerous. It was widely regarded as one of the worst areas of London. Charles Dickens was a former resident and used his experiences and local knowledge to depict his novel ‘Oliver Twist’ from here. It was in St Saviour's Dock that villain Bill Sykes met his grizzly end.
This is an area steeped in history, documented back to the Domesday Book of 1086. Until 1889, it was officially within the county of Surrey. In addition to the Thames, it hosts another river which is largely enclosed now.
The Neckinger rises in Southwark and flows one and a half miles into the Thames at St Saviour's Dock. The name 'Neckinger' is believed to be a derivative of the phrase ‘devils neckcloth', a colloquialism for hangman’s noose. Many pirates were hung here in the 17th century in full view of other river users as a warning to keep within the Kings Law.
Tower Bridge forms a border between Bermondsey and Southwark and is perhaps one of the most iconic bridges in the World as well as a globally recognised symbol of London. It took 8 years to build between 1886 and 1894. It’s two raising platforms, or Bascules, raise to give a width of 200 feet and a headroom of 135 feet to allow access for taller ships to the dock of London. It is raised over a 1000 times a year and is crossed daily by over 40,000 motorists, cyclists and pedestrians. It has an upper level walkway, originally intended to enable workers to continually traverse the river if the bridge was raised. Now used by sightseers, it has a glass floor 137 feet above the water.
Shad Thames offers premium boutique shopping with bars and restaurants as well as offering great views of St Katherine’s Dock and Wapping. It's also home to the Design Museum.

About Love and London:
I'm Jess, I've lived in London for many years, and this channel is a London travel guide for anyone visiting the city that wants to experience it like you live here. Beyond talking about the usual London attractions, myself and my team show you some of the cooler things to do in London, that most travel guides don't mention. Watch our videos and you'll feel like you've got a Londoner friend telling you the best kept secrets in the city.
MUSIC
"Wish You Were Here" by Dyalla and Joakim Karud
