Former principal pleads guilty to diverting funds
BENNINGTON, Vt. (AP) -- A former elementary school principal in Vermont has pleaded guilty to diverting $4,000 in grant money to his personal use.
Michael Heller of Fairfax was principal of Readsboro Elementary School for two years. The Bennington Banner reports the 41-year-old Heller agreed to accept an 18-month deferred sentence as part of a plea agreement. He has to complete 100 hours of community service and pay the school back.
Police said they were contacted by interim superintendent Richard McClements in December about an unauthorized "Principal's Account." Heller was asked to provide invoices, and later admitted to misusing the funds.
His attorney said Tuesday that Heller made a mistake and was in desperate financial circumstances at the time.
