The Belgian Second Division (known as the Proximus League for sponsorship reasons) is the second-highest division in the Belgian footballleague system after the Belgian Pro League. It was created by the Royal Belgian Football Association in 1909. Between 2008 and 2010 it was named EXQI League after a television channel owned by the league main sponsor, broadcasterEuro1080. At the end of the 2009/2010 season, Euro1080 showed no more interest in the league, due to financial terms. However, in 2012, the league found a new sponsor with Belgacom, renaming the league to the Belgacom League.
History
The second division was created in 1909 and was known as the Promotion at the time. From 1923 on there were two leagues in that division (called Promotion A and Promotion B). In 1926, the system changed, with only one league of 14 clubs at the second-highest level now called Division I. At the end of the 1930-31 season, Division I was split into two leagues again (of 14 clubs each). Each year, the bottom two teams of each league were relegated to Division II and the top two clubs were promoted to the Premier Division. In 1952, the division was renamed to Division II with 16 teams (one league). The first two clubs qualified for the first division. In 1974, play-offs were introduced to qualify a second team to the top level. Finally, in 1994, the number of clubs was increased to 18 clubs. A win earns three points since the 1993-94 season. In the seasons 2008-09 and 2009–10, the second division was played between 19 teams following the Namur - Geel case (both teams claiming their rights to access the second division). In June 2015, reforms in top three divisions were approved by the Belgian FA, with the second tier to be named First Division B starting in 2016.
The 2013–14 season of the Belgian Second Division (also known as Belgacom League for sponsorship reasons) began on 2 August 2013 and ended on 27 April 2014.
Team changes
After promotion and relegation, only 15 teams of the previous season remained in the league, with 3 others being replaced:
Out
Oostende were promoted as champions of the previous season.
Verbroedering Geel-Meerhout was promoted after winning the third division playoffs and changed their name before the season started to ASV Geel.

As a result, Hoogstraten was saved from direct relegation and instead forced to play the relegation playoff instead of Heist. Heist was allowed to remain in the Second Division. Hoogstraten lost the relegation playoff and was relegated. (C) = Champion; (R) = Relegated; (P) = Promoted; (E) = Eliminated; (O) = Play-off winner; (A) = Advances to a further round. Only applicable when the season is not finished: (Q) = Qualified to the phase of tournament indicated; (TQ) = Qualified to tournament, but not yet to the particular phase indicated; (RQ) = Qualified to the relegation tournament indicated; (DQ) = Disqualified from tournament.
The 2015–16 season of the Belgian Second Division (also known as Proximus League for sponsorship reasons) begins on 8 August 2015 and ends in April 2016.
Structural changes
This season is the last under the name Second Division. Starting from next season the league will be known as First Division B as a result of reforms in the Belgian league system. The champions will be promoted and 9 teams will be relegated to the third division named Amateur First Division or Amateur Superleague, while no team will be promoted from the lower division. Promotion playoffs are not played and three-period rankings are not applied.
Team changes
After promotion and relegation, only 11 teams of the previous season remained in the league, with 5 others being replaced. One team was not replaced, thus reducing the competition to 17 teams.
In sport, the Second Division, also called Division 2 or Division II is usually the second highest division of a league, and will often have promotion and relegation with divisions above and below. Following the rise of Premier League style competitions, many leagues known as the Second Division have fallen to a lower tier in countries' football league system.
This list of Second Divisions in association football, divided by authority, includes country and actual level.
First division is a term that has had various meanings, at various times, in the sport of baseball, but originally referred to the rankings within a league. Teams which ranked in the top half of the league standings table (e.g. the top 5 teams in a 10-team league) were said to have finished in the "first division", while teams in the bottom half of the standings were said to be in the "second division".
In the major leagues before 1969, players on teams finishing in the first division received monetary shares from the Players' Pool, which was funded by gate receipts from that year's World Series; specifically, prior to the aforementioned expansion, the team winning the World Series received 42% of this money, the team losing the World Series got 28%, with the second-, third- and fourth-place teams in each league being awarded 7½%, 5% and 2½% respectively. Concomitant with the expansion, 1% was taken from both of the World Series teams and given to each of the teams finishing in fifth place.
The Scottish Football League Second Division was the third tier of the Scottish football league system between 1975 and 2013.
History
The Second Division was created in 1975, as part of a wider reconstruction of the Scottish Football League (SFL). Prior to 1975, the SFL had been split into two divisions (Division One and Division Two). The effect of the reconstruction was to split these two divisions into three, with the top flight named the Premier Division, second tier the First Division, and a new third tier was created known as the Second Division. A fourth tier, known as the Third Division, was created in 1994.
In 1998, the Premier Division clubs broke away from the SFL to form the Scottish Premier League (SPL). The Second Division continued as before, but it was now the second level of the SFL. In 2013, the SFL and SPL merged to form the Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL). The SPFL named its third tier as Scottish League One, which effectively replaced the Second Division.

The Belgian Pro League (officially known as Jupiler Pro League [Dutch pronunciation: [ˈʒypɪlɛr ˈpro ˈlik]]) is the top league competition for association football clubs in Belgium. Contested by 16 clubs, it operates on a system of promotion and relegation with the Belgian Second Division. Seasons run from late July to early May, with teams playing 30 matches each in the regular season, and then entering play-offs 1, play-offs 2 or the relegation play-off according to their position in the regular season. Play-offs 1 are contested by the top 6 clubs in the regular season, with each club playing each other twice. Play-offs 2 are contested by teams ranked 7 to 14 in the regular season, divided in two groups of 4 teams playing each other twice. The relegation play-off consists of 5 matches between the 15th and the 16th-placed team in the regular season. As of 2014 the league was sponsored by AB InBev, brewers of Jupiler beer, and officially known as Jupiler Pro League.
The competition was created in 1895 by the Royal Belgian Football Association and was first won by FC Liégeois. Of the 74 clubs to have competed in the first division since its creation, 15 have been crowned champions of Belgium. RSC Anderlecht is the most successful league club with 33 titles, followed by Club Brugge KV (13), Union Saint-Gilloise (11) and Standard Liège (10). It is currently ranked 10th in the UEFA rankings of leagues based on performances in European competitions over the last five-years. The competition was ranked 3rd when the UEFA first published their ranking in 1979 and also the next year in 1980, which is the best ranking the Belgian First Division has ever achieved.
