ABOUT THE VIDEO
_
In this video, I talk about Carl Jung, The Shadow, individuation, and becoming who you’re afraid to be.
Most people are afraid to fully be themselves. They’re afraid to embrace the parts of themselves that might be regarded as unacceptable, because embracing these unacceptable parts makes them feel uncomfortable. So to escape this uncomfortableness, they divide themselves into two halves: conscious and unconscious. In the conscious-half, they construct an ideal image of themselves: an image formed out of the bits and pieces of their past...

Parmenides’ Philosophy: “Being” and “Non-Being”
Parmenides was called the “Father of Metaphysics.”
According to Parmenides “All things are one, and this one is Being”. Parmenides held that the multiplicity of existing things, their changing forms and motion are an appearance of a single eternal reality that is “Being”.
There is no concept to conceive of, no subject there to refer to, and no properties that can be predicated of— “Nothingness.”

The Loner's Path | Philosophy for Non-Conformists
The path of nonconformity is alluring to those who don’t seek to follow the herd known as a society. Instead, they want to make unique individual choices in life, disregarding other people’s opinions and defying society’s norms. And in doing so, they follow their inner compass, their own definitions of right and wrong, and ideas of what’s desirable and undesirable. However, such a way of life could evoke resistance from one’s surroundings and lead one to become a social outcast or get in trouble with the law. This video explores the loner's path (philosophy for non-conformists).

Be a Loser if Need Be | The Philosophy of Epictetus
Stoicism for Inner Peace (book): https://einzelganger.co/innerpeace
We’re so afraid to be seen as losers that we're willing to suffer in exchange for other people’s approval. What a sad state of being in, as by putting our money on external goods, we become dependent on them and gamble away our chances of being happy and free. According to Epictetus, we must be willing to let go of what he called “lesser things.” And if that means that we become total losers in the eyes of society, then that’s a price worth paying.
This video doesn’t advocate for neglecting oneself or self-harm: quite the contrary, from a Stoic point of view. It explores the philosophy of Epictetus, showing a different way to determine what’s important in life, the concept of “being a loser,” and why being “seen” as a lo...

Some Advice About Becoming a Philosophy Professor
I've had quite a few YouTube viewers ask me questions along these lines: I like what I see you're doing, teaching Philosophy, and I think I'd like to do that too. What would I have to do to become a Philosophy teacher?
In this video, I answer those kinds of questions. I talk about what's involved in getting an academic position teaching Philosophy, bits of the story of how I got to where I am, some of the lessons I had to learn the hard way along the road -- and I also stress that one doesn't have to go out and get a degree in order to do, or even to teach Philosophy well.

ABOUT THE VIDEO
_
In this video, I talk about Plato, The Republic, enlightenment, thinking, thinking clearly and better, learning, ignorance, and The Allegory of The Cave.
The word "enlightened" means to bring light to something, or in other words, to remove darkness. If you bring a lamp to a dark room, you enlighten it. And the same thing can happen to your mind. If light is brought to your inner darkness, then you become enlightened. And what's the difference between bein...

Be humble -- and other lessons from the philosophy of water | Raymond Tang
How do we find fulfillment in a world that's constantly changing? Raymond Tang struggled with this question until he came across the ancient Chinese philosophy of the Tao Te Ching. In it, he found a passage comparing goodness to water, an idea he's now applying to his everyday life. In this charming talk, he shares three lessons he's learned so far from the "philosophy of water." "What would water do?" Tang asks. "This simple and powerful question ... has changed my life for the better."

In the conscious-half, they construct an ideal image of themselves: an image formed out of the bits and pieces of their past that they deem as good and acceptable. And as result, in the unconscious-half, they repress the parts of themselves that they view as bad and unacceptable. In Jungian psychology, this repressed part of the personality is called /The Shadow/. And unless The Shadow is integrated into the personality, a person can never reach their fullest potential. Instead, one will always remain incomplete, fractured, and partial—living a life of regret rather than the full life that could have been.

It explores the philosophy of Epictetus, showing a different way to determine what’s important in life, the concept of “being a loser,” and why being “seen” as a loser doesn’t have to be a bad thing.

And what's the difference between being in the light and being in the dark? In the light, you see more clearly. An enlightened person has increased perspicuity, which just means clarity of vision, as opposed to blurriness or blindness. And when one's vision is clear, they more easily reach the places they set out for. But in the dark, you may feel confused, lost, and unable to reach your goals. The word enlightenment has this mystical connotation about it, but it actually a very grounded and human thing. It’s simply unobstructed vision. Think about it like this: sometimes we’re born with, or develop, cataracts in our eyes. Our vision is obstructed. We can’t see clearly. Enlightenment is simply the removal of this obstruction. It’s a return to clear sight, and some people are just born with clear vision. So how does someone become enlightened?

How do we find fulfillment in a world that's constantly changing? Raymond Tang struggled with this question until he came across the ancient Chinese philosophy of the Tao Te Ching. In it, he found a passage comparing goodness to water, an idea he's now applying to his everyday life. In this charming talk, he shares three lessons he's learned so far from the "philosophy of water." "What would water do?" Tang asks. "This simple and powerful question ... has changed my life for the better."
