Peggy Lee (born Norma Deloris Egstrom; May 26, 1920 – January 21, 2002) was an American jazz and popular music singer, songwriter, composer and actress, in a career spanning six decades. From her beginning as a vocalist on local radio to singing with Benny Goodman's big band, she forged a sophisticated persona, evolving into a multi-faceted artist and performer. She wrote music for films, acted, and created conceptual record albums—encompassing poetry, jazz, chamber pop, and art songs.
Peggy Lee was born as Norma Deloris Egstrom in Jamestown, North Dakota, the seventh of eight children of her expecting parents, Marvin Olof Egstrom, a station agent for the Midland Continental Railroad, and his wife Selma Amelia (Anderson) Egstrom, on Wednesday, May 26, 1920. She and her family were Lutherans. Her father was Swedish- American and her mother was Norwegian-American. Her mother died when Peggy was just a four year old toddler. Afterwards, her father married her step-mother Min Schaumber, who treated her with great cruelty while her alcoholic but loving father did little to stop it. Later, she developed her musical talent and took several part-time jobs so that she could be away from home to escape the abuse of her step-mother.
Beauty and the Beat! is a 1959 album (see 1959 in music) by Peggy Lee, accompanied by the George Shearing Quintet.
The notes on the back cover of the original 1959 LP are in the hyperbolic style common at the time and present the story that the recording was live:
Beauty and the Beat may refer to:
Beauty and the Beat is the debut album from Californian new wave band The Go-Go's. Released in 1981 on the I.R.S. Records label, the album was preceded by the single and signature song "We Got the Beat", which became a massive club hit in Europe and, later, the United States. When the album was eventually released, it steadily climbed the Billboard 200 chart, ultimately peaking at number one, where it remained for six consecutive weeks. The LP sold in excess of two million copies and reached double platinum status, making it one of the most successful debut albums of all time. Critically acclaimed, it has been described as one of the "cornerstone albums of American new wave".
The title is a play on the European fairy tale "Beauty and the Beast".
Beauty and the Beat was released to reviews that while positive were not outstanding, especially in light of its eventual summit of the album charts. Robert Christgau found the album good and wrote "this one's got hooks" in his column in The Village Voice. while Jon Pareles in Rolling Stone called it a "solid, likable debut". The album placed 10th on the annual Pazz & Jop Critics Poll in The Village Voice for 1981.
Beauty and the Beat is the second studio album by American hip hop musician Edan, released on Lewis Recordings in 2005.
According to Metacritic, Beauty and the Beat received an average score of 85/100 based on 18 reviews, indicating "universal acclaim".
Peter Macia of Pitchfork Media felt that "[the] gravity of Edan's lyrics and voice on Beauty and the Beat is perhaps its most surprising element" and that "[Edan has] gone from a brainiac prankster to the Borges of rap." Nick Follett of XLR8R called it "one of the best and most original records to come out this decade." Nathan Rabin of The A.V. Club said, "the album's brevity is just another old-fashioned value from a rapper-producer-visionary who doesn't need a whole lot of space to make a big statement."
