We Made A Donation To Berwick Community Trust Food Bank
Members of the team at McCreath Simpson & Prentice (MSP), the agricultural merchanting division of Simpsons Malt Limited, recently donated 400 food pouches to Berwick Community Trust Food Bank ahead of the festive period.
The pouches were supplied to MSP on behalf of The Country Food Trust, a charity which takes meat donated by estates and farms and makes them into meals to be distributed to food banks and people in need.
Last winter, MSP pledged £5,000 to the charity’s annual winter appeal and, as part of this, The Country Food Trust arranged for a pallet containing 1,200 pouches of Venison Bolognese to be dropped off at the MSP headquarters in Berwick-upon-Tweed, for the company to deliver to food banks in the local area.
The first drop-off was the Berwick Community Trust Food Bank in...

Throughout the centuries, in particular during the Medieval and Tudor period the relationship between England and the Scottish was strained. King of England Edward I today as remembered as a feared military leader and also as a man who built many castles that shaped the nation, however in 1296 he inflicted a barbaric massacre on a border Scottish town that shocked those across Europe.
Berwick Upon Tweed is a border town, and today is the last English town before you reach Scotland. But in the latter 13th century it was a thriving port, and Edward I sought to take the town for himself. It changed hands between the Scots and English a number of times, but Edward would brutally order a shocking attack on not just the garrison inside the castle, but on the civilians inside the Town. He ordered his English Army to force their way into the town and massacre anyone they saw in sight.
Estimates suggest that over 7000 people were murdered in cold blood by the English, many of these were even slaughtered inside Churches after they fled to them to claim sanctuary. Edward would completely sack the town, and it was said that the streets ran red with blood. In fact the bloodshed was so much that the mills along the River Tweed turned with blood. Some estimates even suggest that 17000 were massacred including women and children.

The first drop-off was the Berwick Community Trust Food Bank in the town centre, with 400 pouches dropped off for the organisation to include in their Christmas Boxes.
In this video, we spoke to Becci Murray, Operations Director at Berwick Community Trust, who explained more about the Food Bank and how people can go about donating.

BERWICK UPON TWEED, sometimes known as Berwick-on-Tweed or simply Berwick, is a town and civil parish in Northumberland, England.
Also watch our tour of nearby Bamburgh - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xwz2MvaWQtE
Berwick Upon Tweed is Located 2+1⁄2 miles (4 kilometres) south of the Anglo-Scottish border, it is the northernmost town in England.
This border town has a history of being passed between England and Scotland like a hot potato, and Berwick-upon-Tweed’s dominant Town Walls, old prison cells of the Town Hall and winding, cobbled streets hold a complex and violent past.
Berwick Upon Tweed is a fabulous destination for a day out if you're in North East England. Full of tourist attractions, Berwick offers everything from a thriving town centre high street to amazing historic town walls and one of the most scenic river walks in the UK.
The town has passed between England and Scotland on so many occasions and been the location of some really violent and historic moments!
Steeped in history, Berwick on Tweed is now a tourism destination with lots to see and do here and plenty of history to explore from Berwick Town Walls to the remains of Berwick Castle. Other attractions include Berwick Barracks and Berwick Town Hall which are worth a visit!
The Royal Tweed Bridge over the River Tweed is another fascinating feature here worth seeing if you're in the town.
Berwick remains a traditional market town and also has some notable architectural features, in particular its medieval town walls, its Georgian Town Hall, its Elizabethan ramparts, and Britain's earliest barracks buildings
Berwick, along with former fishing village Tweedmouth and the seaside resort of Spittal, historically owes its livelihood to the river. A hub for exports, a centre of a thriving salmon fishing industry from the sixteenth century and a boat-building town from the eighteenth century, it has stone harbour walls and a cobbled quayside beneath the massive ramparts.
The definitive border town, focus of many centuries of warfare between England and Scotland, Berwick has perfectly preserved Elizabethan fortifications, the most complete town defences of its type in Northern Europe, and eighteenth century Barracks that were the first in Britain to be purpose-built. In 2015 Berwick celebrated 900 years of history and heritage with exhibitions, living history, and a programme of exciting events.
Built between and around these iconic historic sites are Georgian buildings of great character, linked by cobbled lanes and narrow archways. This is a town packed with interest and tradition, and even boasts a building which leans even more than the Tower of Pisa - a Granary, now restored as a youth hostel, art gallery and bistro
