The Bay of Plenty, known in Māori as TeMoana-a-Toi, is a large indentation in the northern coast of New Zealand's North Island. It stretches from the Coromandel Peninsula in the west to Cape Runaway in the east, a wide stretch of some 259km of open coastline. The Bay of Plenty Region is situated around this body of water, also incorporating several large islands in the bay.
History
The Māori name for the bay is TeMoana-a-Toi ("the sea of Toi"), a reference to the ancestral explorer Toi-te-huatahi, whose name was given to many prominent places in the region. Various waka arrived with settlers from eastern Polynesia around the thirteenth century: Mataatua, Nukutere, Tainui, Te Arawa and Takitimu.
The name "Bay of Plenty" originated with the English explorer James Cook during his 1769–70 exploration of New Zealand, who noted the abundant resources in the area. In the 1830s, Europeans began to settle in the area.
On 5 October 2011, the MV Rena ran aground on the Astrolabe Reef in the bay causing a large oil spill, described as New Zealand's worst ever environmental disaster.
In the 1892 electoral redistribution, population shift to the North Island required the transfer of one seat from the South Island to the north. The resulting ripple effect saw every electorate established in 1890 have its boundaries altered, and eight electorates were established for the first time, including Bay of Plenty.
The current Bay of Plenty electorate is wrapped around Tauranga city, but does not include the city. It does include Matakana Island.
Prior to the 2007 boundary review, it did not extend to the western side of Tauranga or to Matakana Island. Instead it comprised a section of the central Bay of Plenty coast, from the eastern periphery of the Tauranga urban area to outside the main populated part of Whakatane. It included the towns of Te Puke, Edgecumbe and Papamoa. Rapid population growth around Tauranga has driven considerable boundary change at each review. For the 2008 election, the eastern boundary moved far westwards to the eastern fringe of Te Puke, in the process abandoning sections of the central coast to the Rotorua and East Coast seats.
Bay of Plenty Rugby League is the local sporting body responsible for the administration of Rugby league in the Bay of Plenty region of New Zealand. Following the restructuring of the New Zealand Rugby League they are part of the Upper Central Zone along with Waikato Rugby League, Coastline Rugby League and Gisborne Tairawhiti Rugby League.
Previous National Competitions
Between 1994 and 1996, the Bay of Plenty region was represented by the Bay of Plenty Stags in the Lion Red Cup competition.

Bartercard Cup
The Bay of Plenty region has been represented by two separate teams in the Bartercard Cup competition.
The Ngongotaha Chiefs competed in the 2000 and 2001 seasons. The team is notable for losing the first sixteen matches of the 2001 season, causing the Chiefs to withdraw from the competition six rounds before the completion of the season.
The Waicoa Bay Stallions, a co-operative team involving players from Waikato, Coastline and Bay of Plenty federations, joined the competition in 2004, replacing the Taranaki Wildcats. The team is notable for having former international Tawera Nikau as head coach for their inaugural year. The Stallions folded along with the competition at the end of the 2007 season.
Rugby league football, usually called rugby league, or simply league, is a full contact sport played by two teams of thirteen players on a rectangular field. One of the two codes of rugby football, it originated in England in 1895 as a split from the Rugby Football Union over the issue of payments to players. Its rules gradually changed with the purpose of producing a faster, more entertaining game for spectators. It has been cited as the toughest, most physically demanding of team sports.
In rugby league, points are scored by carrying the ball and touching it to the ground beyond the opposing team's goal line; this is called a try, and is the primary method of scoring. The opposing team attempts to stop the attacking side scoring points by tackling the player carrying the ball. In addition to tries, points can be scored by kicking goals. After each try, the scoring team gains a free kick to try at goal with a conversion for further points. Kicks at goal may also be awarded for penalties, and field goals can be attempted at any time.

Mount Maunganui & McLaren Falls | Bay of Plenty, NEW ZEALAND
When visiting Mt Maunganui aka The Mount in The Bay of Plenty, climbing to the summit of Mauao is an absolute must-do activity. The view from the top is magnificent and well worth the steep and steady climb!
Mauao is an extinct volcanic cone and an iconic landmark of the coastal Bay of Plenty for both tourists and locals alike.
There are tons of cafes and restaurants to eat at in Mount Maunganui. For lunch we went to a very colourful eatery that caught our eye when we initially drove past called Rice Rice Baby. Fresh and tasty Vietnamese food. It totally hit the spot after our climb up the mount!

There's probably actually more accommodation options in the form of hotels and apartments though, but we prefer to have an Airbnb so that we can cook and settle in a bit more. Given we had a week here it made more sense.
Honestly not much more than postive things to say about Mt Maunganui, any New Zealand road trip should include the Bay Of Plenty but more specifically this special little place.

Rice Rice Baby
Address: 136 Maunganui Road, Mount Maunganui 3116
Hours: Mon–Sun 11:30am – late
After lunch we headed over to McLaren Falls and McLaren Falls Park which is only about 10 mins from Tauranga but it's longer when coming from Mount Maunganui like we did. While at McLaren Falls Park we enjoyed a leisurely stroll to Lake McLaren before making our way over to Te Puna where our accommodation for the night was.
Our Airbnb was a lovely cosy studio cottage. A gem nestled in the country-side with wonderful views, that's still close enough to Tauranga city too. Karen was a very warm and welcoming host and her Airbnb was such a comfortable stay.

The main center for the Eastern Bay of Plenty, Whakatāne is one of the sunniest towns in New Zealand. Whakatāne is also known for its fishing – more yellowfin tuna are caught here than anywhere else in the country.
Today you will sit back and virtually travel with me to Whakatane town center
a vast range of delectable cafes and restaurants, boutique fashion and homeware stores, bookshops, several sporting and recreation outlets and more. The town comes alive with local musicians and touring bands through the summer months. There’s also a multi-screen cinema complex showing the latest blockbusters and renowned bars and pubs for evening drinks.
Whakatāne's climate is without equal; it has claimed the title of the Sunshine Capital of New Zealand for four years, a highly-contested competition throughout the country.
Whakatāne also has a wide variety of walks both inside and surrounding the city centre, including the Warren Cole Walkway, the Public Art Trail, Historic Trail, Whakatāne Gardens, and the western end of the Ngā Tapuwae o Toi walking track.
Thanks for watching and enjoy the ride with me in the comfort of your living room. To appreciate more the beauty of this video, you should use 4k/ TV resolutions.

Nau mai haere mai ki Te Moananui ā Toi! Welcome to the Coastal Bay of Plenty, New Zealand.
Ours is a place of positive energy, a rich coastal paradise. Where cultures embrace and the natural generosity of our people is as abundant as our fertile land and open seas. Where else in New Zealand can you kayak across a lake to see a canyon shine with glow worms after dark? Or step foot on an active marine volcano? Here you can explore bush-clad islands, admire waterfalls, glimpse unique wildlife, be utterly pampered and relax on white-sand beaches.

Mount Maunganui is one of our favourite places in New Zealand! The walk up Mt Maunganui gives the most epic views across the beach, camping grounds and the Bay Of Plenty that you honestly...⬇ More Below ✈ Our 220 page guide on how to travel non-stop — https://geni.us/9VHNx
The positive of borders being closed is exploring more of New Zealand. It's been years since we last visited Mount Maunganui so we were long overdue to get back there — instantly we were reminded of why we love it so much. The Mount, as it's more commonly known, is such an epic spot to visit.
There's a little bit of everything here. The walk up the Mt has the most incredible views across the beach and island, sights back across Bay of Plenty and down onto the camp ground as well. There's cool cafes, a decent amount of restaurants (actually could do with 1 or 2 slightly more premium spots if we had to pick something), awesome beach, active community and a decent amount of Airbnb options also.
