The Battle of Xuzhou was fought between Japanese and Chinese forces in May 1938 during Second Sino-Japanese War. In contemporary accounts in English, the event was usually referred to as the "Battle of Hsuchow", using postal romanization.
History
In 1937, the North China Area Army had chased Song Zheyuan's 29th Army to the south along the Jinpu Railway (see Tianjin–Pukou Railway Operation) after his defeat in the Battle of Lugou Bridge. After Japan won the Battle of Nanjing, the North China Area Army advanced southward to establish a Japanese connection between Beijing and Nanjing, ignoring the non-expansionist policy of the Imperial General Headquarters in Tokyo. Most mechanized and air forces in Eastern China were wiped out in the Battle of Shanghai in 1937. Although new equipment was purchased, it had yet to be shipped. Han Fuqu—the chairman of the Shandong province—rejected orders from Chiang Kai-shek and kept retreating to preserve his force. After Qingdao was occupied in January 1938, his policy was denounced and he was executed on 24 January. In March 1938, the Japanese forces occupied the north of Shandong, including the capital city Jinan. The defence line along the Yellow River was torn apart. Due to pressure from the Japanese forces, 64 Chinese divisions gathered around Xuzhou in Jiangsu, the headquarters of 5th Military region of the National Revolutionary Army. Without surrounding it, Itagaki Seishiro moved south first to attack Tai'erzhuang, where he was defeated by Li Zongren in a regional asymmetric battle.
Xuzhou, otherwise known as Pengcheng in ancient times, is a major city in and the fourth largest prefecture-level city of Jiangsu Province, China. Its population was 8,577,225 at the 2010 census whom 2,623,066 lived in the built-up (or metro) area made of Quanshan, Gulou, Yunlong and Tongshan districts. It is known for its role as a transportation hub in northwestern Jiangsu, as it has expressways and railway links connecting directly to the provinces of Henan and Shandong, the neighboring port city of Lianyungang, as well as the economic hub Shanghai.
Before the adoption of Hanyu Pinyin, the city's name was typically romanized as Suchow or Süchow, though it also appeared as Siu Tcheou [Fou], Hsu-chou, Hsuchow, and Hsü-chow.
History
During the Xia and Shang Dynasties (c. 2200−1600BC), Xuzhou lay in an area inhabited by the Dongyi or Huaiyi peoples who were constantly at war with the Shang and Zhou Dynasties. The Xuzhou region was called Huaiyang during the Zhou Dynasty (1600 BC−256 BC) since the Huai River crosses the area. During the Spring and Autumn Period (771 BC−426 BC), Xuzhou was a collection of small farming/fishing villages and towns and formed part of the border region between the Zhou vassal States of Chu, Wu and Qu. Both the States of Pi and Peng lay within its borders. Xuzhou was at one time a capital of the State of Xu, a vassal state exterminated by the State of Wu in 512BC. In turn, Wu was conquered by the State of Yue a few decades later. Chu gradually expanded its influence around Xuzhou after absorbing the nearby State of Cai in 447BC followed by the conquest of the State of Yue in 334BC. By the Warring States period, it was firmly in the cultural and administrative sphere of Chu. The State of Chu moved to this area in 278 BC after the Qin army captured its old capital, Ying, in modern Jingzhou, Hubei.
Xuzhou or Xu Prefecture (許州) was a zhou (prefecture) in imperial China centering on modern Xuchang in Henan, China. It existed (intermittently) from 581 to 1913.
Geography
The administrative region of Xuzhou in the Tang dynasty is in central Henan. It probably includes parts of modern:

Positioned between northern and southern China, Xuzhou’s location has given rise to a distinctive culinary culture. Its cuisine blends the robust flavors of northern China with the refined tastes of the south, creating a unique and flavorful food tradition.

70 Seconds, 70 Years: The Battle of Xuzhou
On today’s 70 Seconds, 70 Years we will bring back the memory of the Battle of Xuzhou which marks the beginning of China’s attrition strategy.
In order to take control of the railway from north to south China, 240,000 Japanese troops were directed towards Xuzhou, in China’s Jiangsu Province in early 1938.
The Chinese military assembled 64 divisions, around 600,000 soldiers, to defend the area.
After losing Shanghai and Nanjing, Chinese top brass realized that huge disadvantage in equipment rendered unwise the head-on defense strategy. Accordingly, China began gradually adopting the warfare of attrition during the Battle of Xuzhou.
The Chinese army managed to hold back its lines for months until May 1938. As a result, valuable time was saved for the preparation of Wuhan Defense i...
