Battle of Thermopylae
The Battle of Thermopylae (/θərˈmɒpᵻliː/ thər-MOP-i-lee; Greek: Μάχη τῶν Θερμοπυλῶν, Machē tōn Thermopylōn) was fought between an alliance of Greek city-states, led by King Leonidas of Sparta, and the Persian Empire of Xerxes I over the course of three days, during the second Persian invasion of Greece. It took place simultaneously with the naval battle at Artemisium, in August or September 480 BC, at the narrow coastal pass of Thermopylae ("The Hot Gates"). The Persian invasion was a delayed response to the defeat of the first Persian invasion of Greece, which had been ended by the Athenian victory at the Battle of Marathon in 490 BC. Xerxes had amassed a huge army and navy, and set out to conquer all of Greece. The Athenian general Themistocles had proposed that the allied Greeks block the advance of the Persian army at the pass of Thermopylae, and simultaneously block the Persian navy at the Straits of Artemisium.
A Greek force of approximately 7,000 men marched north to block the pass in the summer of 480 BC. The Persian army, alleged by the ancient sources to have numbered over one million, but today considered to have been much smaller (various figures are given by scholars, ranging between about 100,000 and 150,000), arrived at the pass in late August or early September. The vastly outnumbered Greeks held off the Persians for seven days (including three of battle) before the rear-guard was annihilated in one of history's most famous last stands. During two full days of battle, the small force led by Leonidas blocked the only road by which the massive Persian army could pass. After the second day, a local resident named Ephialtes betrayed the Greeks by revealing that a small path led behind the Greek lines. Leonidas, aware that his force was being outflanked, dismissed the bulk of the Greek army and remained to guard their retreat with 300 Spartans, 700 Thespians, 400 Thebans, and perhaps a few hundred others, most of whom were killed.

The Battle of Thermopylae was fought in 323 BC between the Macedonians and a coalition of armies mostly from central Greece in the pass of Thermopylae during the Lamian War.
After Antipater received news of the Greek revolt, he sent messengers to Craterus and Philotas who were in Asia with an army of over 10,000 soldiers, to come to his aid. But receiving news of the progress of the rebellion and realizing that he couldn't wait for his reinforcements to arrive, he marched south to Thessaly with 13,000 foot soldiers and 600 horsemen, while he left Sippas in command of Macedon. But the Thessalians who in the beginning supported Macedon changed sides to the Greek alliance and Leosthenes forces, occupying the passes of Thermopylae, significantly outnumbered the Macedonians. Antipater was defeated and since he could not retreat because the Greeks had more cavalry than him, he shut himself in the city of Lamia where he was besieged.

The Battle of Thermopylae in 267 was the unsuccessful defense of the pass by local forces during the great invasion of the Balkans by the Heruli.
The Heruls are first mentioned by Roman writers in the reign of Gallienus (260-268), when they accompanied the Goths ravaging the coasts of the Black Sea and the Aegean. The mixed warbands managed to sack Byzantium in 267, but their eastern contingent was virtually annihilated in the Balkans at the Battle of Naissus (Serbia) two years later, the battle that earned Marcus Aurelius Claudius his surname "Gothicus."

The Battle of Thermopylae as part of the German invasion of Greece during World War II occurred in 1941 following the retreat from the Olympus and Servia passes. British Commonwealth forces began to set up defensive position at the pass at Thermopylae, famous for the Battle of Thermopylae in 480BC. General Bernard Freyberg was given the task of defending the coastal pass with Mackay defending the village of Brallos. In the New Zealand sector, the 5th Brigade was deployed along the coastal road, the foothills south of Lamia, and the Spercheios River. The 4th Brigade was on the right where it had established coast-watching patrols, and the 6th was in reserve. In the Australian sector, the 19th Brigade, comprising the 2/4th and 2/8th Battalions, defended Brallos. On 19 April, the 2/1st and 2/5th Battalions were placed under the command of Maj Gen George Vasey, and that day and during the early hours of the next, 2/11th Battalion rejoined the brigade. Generals Freyberg and Mackay had been informing their subordinates that there would be no more withdrawals, both unaware of the higher level discussions on the evacuation. After the battle, Mackay was quoted as saying.

The Battle of Thermopylae was fought in 279 BC between invading Gallic armies and a combined army of Greek Aetolians, Boeotians, Athenians, Phocians at Thermopylae. The Gauls under Brennus were victorious, and advanced further into the Greek peninsula where they sacked Delphi.
Background
Gallic groups, originating from the various La Tène chiefdoms, began a south-eastern movement into the Balkan peninsula from the 4th century BC. Although Gallic settlements were concentrated in the western half of the Carpathian basin, there were notable incursions, and settlements, within the Balkan peninsula itself.
From their new bases in northern Illyria and Pannonia, the Gallic invasions climaxed in the early 3rd century BC, with the invasion of Greece. The 279 BC invasion of Greece proper was preceded by a series of other military campaigns waged toward southern Balkans and against the kingdom of Macedonia, favoured by the state of confusion ensuing from the intricated succession to Alexander.

Together, as one, the world will be ours!"
But they forgot one thing,
The stony-hearted warriors of Sparta,
And a king, named Leonidas,
With only 300, but their hearts priceless.
"Gather!" said Leonidas, "To Thermopylae we go,
We'll wait in the narrow pass, to face the foe.
Few we are, but our essence is strong,
Even death is met with pride on this path we throng."
And they marched, chests out, pride in their stride,
Leaving Sparta's red earth behind,
With one last look at families, at loves,
"Maybe we'll return, maybe not, but fight we shall."
In the first clash, iron proved stronger than steel,
Spartans, like lions, hurled their spears with zeal,
Persia, numerous but to the fire in their hearts, fell short.
For three days, without pause, without falter, they fought,
Each Spartan, a hero, a legend there became.
But alas! Betrayal found its moment,
A Greek's shown secret path,
Planted a deep ache in Leonidas' heart.
"Here, here is our final stand," he declared,
"Fight to death, but no step back."
And the last battle, in blood and sweat,
Leonidas, leading, fell with a swing of his sword,
But even in falling, with pride,
"To death we march, but our story will survive," he whispered to the wind.
Greece united thereafter,
Thanks to the sacrifice of Leonidas and his 300,

Λίγοι όμως γνωρίζουμε πως τον 3ο π.Χ. αιώνα μια πολυπληθής γαλατική ορδή, που καθόλου δεν έμοιαζε με τους παραπάνω συμπαθέστατους ήρωες, εισέβαλε στον ελλαδικό χώρο, σπέρνοντας τον τρόμο και απειλώντας όπως θα δούμε ακόμη και την ίδια την ύπαρξη του ελληνισμού. Στο σημερινό μας επεισόδιο, θα παρουσιάσουμε όλα τα γεγονότα της γαλατικής εισβολής, μεταξύ των οποίων και την δεύτερη μάχη στις Θερμοπύλες, η οποία παρουσιάζει έντονες ομοιότητες με αυτήν που είχε δοθεί το 480 π.Χ. εναντίον των Περσών. Πάμε, λοιπόν, να ξεκινήσουμε το ιστορικό μας ταξίδι με οδηγό τον ιστορικό περιηγητή Παυσανία, ο οποίος καταγράφει εκτενώς τα γεγονότα στο έργο του «Ελλάδος Περιήγησις».

The sky was barraged with arrows upon Xerxes' command,
The earth groaned under the footsteps of millions,
"We march!" declared Persia, "We shall topple Greece,
Together, as one, the world will be ours!"
But they forgot one thing,
The stony-hearted warriors of Sparta,
And a king, named Leonidas,
With only 300, but their hearts priceless.
"Gather!" said Leonidas, "To Thermopylae we go,
We'll wait in the narrow pass, to face the foe.
Few we are, but our essence is strong,
Even death is met with pride on this path we throng."
And they marched, chests out, pride in their stride,
Leaving Sparta's red earth behind,
With one last look at families, at loves,
"Maybe we'll return, maybe not, but fight we shall."
In the first clash, iron proved stronger than steel,
Spartans, like lions, hurled their spears with zeal,
Persia, numerous but to the fire in their hearts, fell short.
For three days, without pause, without falter, they fought,
Each Spartan, a hero, a legend there became.
But alas! Betrayal found its moment,
A Greek's shown secret path,
Planted a deep ache in Leonidas' heart.
"Here, here is our final stand," he declared,
"Fight to death, but no step back."
And the last battle, in blood and sweat,
Leonidas, leading, fell with a swing of his sword,
But even in falling, with pride,
"To death we march, but our story will survive," he whispered to the wind.
Greece united thereafter,
Thanks to the sacrifice of Leonidas and his 300,
And history never forgot these heroes,
How could it?
Even their deaths were a defiance to oblivion.

Οι περισσότεροι όταν ακούμε για Γαλάτες, το μυαλό μας πηγαίνει σε αγαπημένους ήρωες όπως ο Αστερίξ, ο Οβελίξ, ο Πανοραμίξ. Λίγοι όμως γνωρίζουμε πως τον 3ο π.Χ. αιώνα μια πολυπληθής γαλατική ορδή, που καθόλου δεν έμοιαζε με τους παραπάνω συμπαθέστατους ήρωες, εισέβαλε στον ελλαδικό χώρο, σπέρνοντας τον τρόμο και απειλώντας όπως θα δούμε ακόμη και την ίδια την ύπαρξη του ελληνισμού. Στο σημερινό μας επεισόδιο, θα παρουσιάσουμε όλα τα γεγονότα της γαλατικής εισβολής, μεταξύ των οποίων και την δεύτερη μάχη στις Θερμοπύλες, η οποία παρουσιάζει έντονες ομοιότητες με αυτήν που είχε δοθεί το 480 π.Χ. εναντίον των Περσών. Πάμε, λοιπόν, να ξεκινήσουμε το ιστορικό μας ταξίδι με οδηγό τον ιστορικό περιηγητή Παυσανία, ο οποίος καταγράφει εκτενώς τα γεγονότα στο έργο του «Ελλάδος Περιήγησις».

Battle of Thermopylae
The Battle of Thermopylae (/θərˈmɒpᵻliː/ thər-MOP-i-lee; Greek: Μάχη τῶν Θερμοπυλῶν, Machē tōn Thermopylōn) was fought between an alliance of Greek city-states, led by King Leonidas of Sparta, and the Persian Empire of Xerxes I over the course of three days, during the second Persian invasion of Greece. It took place simultaneously with the naval battle at Artemisium, in August or September 480 BC, at the narrow coastal pass of Thermopylae ("The Hot Gates"). The Persian invasion was a delayed response to the defeat of the first Persian invasion of Greece, which had been ended by the Athenian victory at the Battle of Marathon in 490 BC. Xerxes had amassed a huge army and navy, and set out to conquer all of Greece. The Athenian general Themistocles had proposed that the allied Greeks block the advance of the Persian army at the pass of Thermopylae, and simultaneously block the Persian navy at the Straits of Artemisium.
A Greek force of approximately 7,000 men marched north to block the pass in the summer of 480 BC. The Persian army, alleged by the ancient sources to have numbered over one million, but today considered to have been much smaller (various figures are given by scholars, ranging between about 100,000 and 150,000), arrived at the pass in late August or early September. The vastly outnumbered Greeks held off the Persians for seven days (including three of battle) before the rear-guard was annihilated in one of history's most famous last stands. During two full days of battle, the small force led by Leonidas blocked the only road by which the massive Persian army could pass. After the second day, a local resident named Ephialtes betrayed the Greeks by revealing that a small path led behind the Greek lines. Leonidas, aware that his force was being outflanked, dismissed the bulk of the Greek army and remained to guard their retreat with 300 Spartans, 700 Thespians, 400 Thebans, and perhaps a few hundred others, most of whom were killed.
