The Battle of Ringgold Gap was fought November 27, 1863, in northwest Georgia during the Chattanooga Campaign of the American Civil War. The Confederate victory by Maj. Gen.Patrick Cleburne gave the artillery and wagon trains of the Army of Tennessee safe passage to retreat through the "Ringgold Gap" mountain pass and caused high Federal casualties.
Background
The disastrous Confederate rout at Missionary Ridge on November 25 forced the Army of Tennessee to retreat into northwest Georgia. The army soon came upon the mountain pass known as the Ringgold Gap. To give time for his artillery and wagon trains to get through the gap, Confederate General Braxton Bragg decided to send Maj. Gen.Patrick Cleburne to defend the pass from the Union army. While Cleburne expressed doubt he could defend the gap adequately with his single division, Bragg refused to send any further troops to assist Cleburne. Cleburne deployed his men at the gap before dawn of the 27; Colonel Hiram Granbury's brigade was placed to the right of the gap, while the left was defended by the 16th Alabama Infantry. The remainder of the division was deployed in the gap itself as reserves.

Battles for Chattanooga, Part 5 | Ringgold Gap
After the Battle of Chickamauga, the Union Army of the Cumberland retreated back to Chattanooga and dug in. The Confederate Army of Tennessee gave chase and laid siege of the Army of the Cumberland and Chattanooga. Union Major General Ulysses S. Grant arrived in October and began organizing a relief effort for the army and the city of Chattanooga. When Sherman failed to dislodge Cleburne from Tunnel Hill, George Thomas ordered his Army of the Cumberland to attack Missionary Ridge. When the Confederate Army of Tennessee retreated into Georgia, Joseph Hooker's troops gave chase. Standing in Hooker's way was Patrick Cleburne's Division positioned at Ringgold Gap. The resulting battle demonstrated Patrick Cleburne's generalship.

Civil War battle so important, THREE Union Generals were there! battle of Ringgold Gap, GA. 1863
Ringgold is just over the state line from Chattanooga, Tennessee. It’s railroad depot has stood here since 1850. It was crucial in the delivery of supplies to the Deep South during the war. Confederate General Cleburne was charged to protect this depot at all costs in late November, 1863. Winning this battle was so important to the North that even though General Joseph Hooker commanded the Union troops here, Generals Ulysses S. Grant AND William T. Sherman showed up also! In fact, even with all of that brass in command, the Union army suffered more losses than the Confederates and lost the battle. General Hooker was blamed for the loss and was ordered back to Chattanooga. He had lost the confidence of his commanders.
