The American invasion of Okinawa was the last big island operation on the Pacific Front. The Gate of Japan: Battle of Okinawa – Part 1
The preparation and plans of the United States Army and Navy for the attack on Okinawa were part of a larger Allied strategy to secure bases for an impending invasion of the Japanese home islands. The operation, codenamed Operation Iceberg, was the largest amphibious assault in the Pacific Theatre during World War II which had brought the American troops to the gates of Japan. The campaign was meticulously planned, combining the efforts of the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, and Army, with the goal of capturing Okinawa to establish a staging area for the invasion of Japan and to secure airfields for bombing operations against the Japanese mainland.

It's the next step toward invading Japan's Home Islands- invading Okinawa, and it begins April 1st. Advances are easy by land, but at sea the kamikaze menace is in full swing. In Burma, plans are made to liberate Rangoon; in the west hundreds of thousands of Germans are surrounded in the Ruhr; and in the east, the Soviets begin assaults on Königsberg and Vienna.
