The Second Battle of Lincoln occurred at Lincoln Castle on Saturday 20 May 1217, during the First Barons' War, between the forces of the future Louis VIII of France and those of King Henry III of England. Louis's forces were attacked by a relief force under the command of William Marshal, 1st Earl of Pembroke. Thomas, the Comte du Perche, commanding the French troops, was killed and Louis was expelled from his base in the southeast of England. The looting that took place afterwards is known as the "Lincoln Fair". The citizens of Lincoln were loyal to Louis so Henry's forces sacked the city.
Once John died, many barons were willing to change sides and fight for Henry against Prince Louis' claim. William Marshal, 1st Earl of Pembroke, a knight of great skill and prowess, served as regent for Henry. William Marshal had the power of the king's command. Marshal called on all nobles holding castles in England to a muster in Newark. Approximately 400 knights, 250 crossbowmen, and a larger auxiliary force of both mounted and foot soldiers were assembled. Marshal marched his forces to the city of Lincoln to break Prince Louis's siege.
The Battle of Lincoln, or the First Battle of Lincoln, occurred on 2 February 1141. Stephen of England was captured during the battle, imprisoned, and effectively deposed while Empress Matilda ruled for a short time.
As soon as the battle was joined, the majority of the leading magnates fled the king. Other important magnates captured with the king were Baldwin fitz Gilbert; Bernard de Balliol, Roger de Mowbray; Richard de Courcy; William Peverel of Nottingham; Gilbert de Gant; Ingelram de Say; Ilbert de Lacy and Richard fitz Urse, all men of respected baronial families; it had only been the Earls who had fled.
The Battle of Lincoln, New Mexico was a five-day-long firefight between civilians that took place from July 15–19, 1878 in the named city. It was the largest armed battle of the Lincoln County War and the climax of that civilian conflict in the New Mexico Territory. The firefight was interrupted and suppressed by United States Cavalry led by Lt. Col. Nathan Dudley from Fort Stanton.
By September 1878, when Governor Lew Wallace was appointed in charge of the Territory by the US President, many of the Regulators and other fighters had returned to normal life, often leaving the area. Wallace tasked Lincoln County Sheriff Pat Garrett to reduce lawlessness in the region. By the end of three years, he and his deputies had hunted down and killed Billy the Kid and other figures who had continued to operate as bandits and gunfighters.
Background
While the seeds were sown in the years prior to 1878, open armed conflict in the Lincoln County War began with the murder of rancher John Tunstall on February 18, 1878 by members of the Jesse Evans Gang, who were hired as gunmen by the "Murphy-Dolan" faction (called "The House") to harass their commercial competition in Lincoln, New Mexico. Tunstall had become a competitor of the established Murphy-Dolan mercantile store and bank, and they were losing money in the frontier town.

The University of Lincoln is honouring Lincolnshire’s inspirational women by re-naming its art building after the celebrated 13th Century custodian of Lincoln castle Nicola de la Haye.
Nicola played a key role in the fight for the English crown, defending the castle on behalf the new boy-king Henry III, from the invading forces of the future Louis VIII of France. The Battle of Lincoln on 20th May 1217 was pivotal in Henry’s retaining his crown. As part of the peace deal, Henry reissued Magna Carta, which King John had granted in 1215 but soon withdrawn, and Louis went home, leaving England's Anglo-French rulers more Anglo and less French than he had planned.
