German Attack and Retreat: Battle of Gumbinnen - Russian Invasion of East Prussia Part 2
⭐️In early August the Russian crossed into East Prussia with two armies facing one German army. The First Army under Paul von Rennenkampf was the first to take action, while the Second Army under Samsonov was advancing slowly.
⭐️Prittwitz ordered Hermann von François First Corps to retreat behind the Angerrap but instead faced Rennenkampf at Stallupönen and won but retreated soon after.
⭐️He retreated to Gumbinnen and faced the Russians in another battle with a line from Gumbinned to Goldap, formed of the First Corps under François, the XVII Corps under August von Mackensen and the First Reserve Corps under Otto von Below. However the battle was won by the Russians and the Germans withdrew. Causing Prittwitz to be replaced by Paul von Hidenburg.

Russian Invasion of Germany in East Prussia (1914) Part 1 - Battle of Gumbinnen
The Russian Empire had invaded the German Empire through East Prussia on August 17th 1914. With the goal of threatening Germany's Homefront and bringing pressure off of the French Forces in the West, the bloody battles that would soon follow would play a key role in how the remainder of The Great War would proceed.

The Rape of Belgium And The Battle of Tannenberg I THE GREAT WAR - Week 5
During their advance through Belgium, the German Army is committing atrocities against Belgian civilians - justified as response to resistance and sabotage against their advancement. The Austro-Hungarian Army is perpetrating massacres against the Serbian civilian population to retaliate against Serbian guerrilla warfare. At the Eastern Front, German generals Hindenburg and Ludendorff succeed in one of the most important battles of World War I: The Battle of Tannenberg.
Last week, the war already showed its new and cruel face for the first time: http://bit.ly/1AXOird
