The Battle of Batoche was the decisive battle of the North-West Rebellion, which pitted the Canadian authorities against a force of insurrectionist Métis. Fought from May 9 to May 12, 1885 at the ad hocProvisional Government of Saskatchewan capital of Batoche, the greater numbers and superior firepower of General Frederick Middleton's force could not be successfully countered by the Métis, as had happened at the earlier Battle of Fish Creek, and the town was eventually captured. The defeat of the Métis led to the surrender of Louis Riel on May 15 and the collapse of the Provisional Government. Over the next several weeks, Poundmaker would surrender and Cree fighters and families under Big Bear held out the longest, fighting off Canadian troops pursuing them in the Battle of Frenchman's Butte and Battle of Loon Lake, and, gradually dwindling in number, staying on the move until Big Bear eventually turned himself in to Mounties at Fort Carlton in early July.

Louis Riel & the Battle of Batoche
The dream of a Métis State in the Prairies ended on May 12, 1885 at the Battle of Batoche in Saskatchewan, Canada. Louis Riel had petitioned Ottawa for land rights and better conditions for the native population who were dying of starvation. When the petition was denied Riel established a provisional government and an army was sent to quell the insurrection – a decision that had devastating consequences for those involved. "The Battle of Batoche is a critical moment in Métis history. Here, the Métis people made their last stand against heavily armed Dominion forces.
For three days between May 9th and May 12th 1885, 250 Métis battled 916 Canadian Forces. 51 Métis were left dead, wounded or captured. 6 months later, the battle claimed one final victim – Louis Riel – who was hung after being convicted for High Treason.
Without a doubt, much of today’s social and political landscape is influenced by the aftermath of those three days in May." - http://www.learnmichif.com/culture/batoche

For two days, the Métis effectively resisted Middleton's forces by firing from rifle pits built under the command of Gabriel Dumont.
Weakened and running out of ammo and armed only with rifles against a force with a Gatling gun and cannons they were overwhelmed by the 4th day.
Riel and Gabriel Dumont escaped.
Gabriel Dumont fled to the United States.
Years later he was allowed to return and resumed his life as a hunter.
Riel later turned himself in and was eventually tried and hanged for treason.
He has been recognized as a Father of Confederation, a defender of his people, and as a protector of minority rights in Canada.
Riel remains the most famous Métis leader and an important figure for Métis people in Western Canada.
