Battle of Rabaul (1942)
The Battle of Rabaul, also known by the Japanese as Operation R, was fought on the island of New Britain in the Australian Territory of New Guinea, in January and February 1942. It was a strategically significant defeat of Allied forces by Japan in the Pacific campaign of World War II. Following the capture of the port of Rabaul, Japanese forces turned it into a major base and proceeded to land on mainland New Guinea, advancing toward Port Moresby. Hostilities on the neighbouring island of New Ireland are also usually considered to be part of the same battle. Rabaul was important because of its proximity to the Japanese territory of the Caroline Islands, site of a major Imperial Japanese Navy base on Truk.
Prelude
The small Australian Army garrison in New Britain—known as Lark Force—numbered 1,400 men and was commanded by Lieutenant Colonel John Scanlan. It included just 716 frontline Australian Imperial Force (AIF) soldiers from the 2/22nd Battalion, deployed from March 1941 as fears of war with Japan increased. The force also included personnel from a local Militia unit, the New Guinea Volunteer Rifles (NGVR), a coastal defence battery, an anti-aircraft battery, an anti-tank battery and a detachment of the 2/10th Field Ambulance. The 2/22nd Battalion Band—which was also included in Lark Force—is perhaps the only military unit ever to have been entirely recruited from the ranks of the Salvation Army. A commando unit, the 130-strong 2/1st Independent Company, was detached to garrison the nearby island of New Ireland.

Rabaul
Rabaul is a township in East New Britain province, on the island of New Britain, in the country of Papua New Guinea. New Britain is an island about 60 kilometres to the east of the island of New Guinea. Rabaul was the provincial capital and most important settlement in the province until it was destroyed in 1994 by falling ash of a volcanic eruption.
During the eruption, ash was sent thousands of metres into the air and the subsequent rain of ash caused 80% of the buildings in Rabaul to collapse. After the eruption the capital was moved to Kokopo, about 20 kilometres (12 mi) away. Rabaul is continually threatened by volcanic activity due to having been built on the edge of Rabaul caldera, a flooded caldera of a large pyroclastic shield.
Rabaul was known as Simpsonhafen during the German New Guinea administration which controlled the area between 1884 and formally till 1919. From 1910 Rabaul was the headquarters of German New Guinea until captured by the British Empire during World War I, when it became the capital of the Australian mandated Territory of New Guinea until 1937 when it was first destroyed by volcano.

Today on The Daily Dose, Australia’s WWII Defeat at Rabaul.
After Allied war planners gave up on their objective of establishing a “secure fleet anchorage” on the South Pacific Island of New Britain—deeming the island indefensible under a full-scale Japanese attack—a garrison of Australian troops were tasked with the protection of a Royal Australian Air Force landing field at Rabaul, as well as a flying boat anchorage at nearby Simpson Harbor—assets vital to the Allies’ surveillance of Japanese troop movements in the region. Led by RAAF Wing Commander John Lerew, the contingent of men had little offensive capabilities, and when the garrison came under Japanese attack on January 4th, 1942, Lerew sent RAAF headquarters an old Roman gladiator saying, “Nos Morituri Te Salutamus,” or “we who are about to die salut you.”
On January 20th, over 100 Japanese war planes attacked Rabaul, quickly knocking out Australian coastal artillery defense, while forcing Australian soldiers to retreat from Rabaul into the forbidding dangers inherent within the island’s jungleous interior. Two days later, some 3 to 4,000 Japanese landed just off of New Ireland, while on January 23rd, an additional 5,000 took control of Simpson Harbor. On February 9th, the Japanese landed a force at Gasmata, effectively severing the Australian’s line of retreat, leading to the capture or surrender of more than 1,000 Allied soldiers.
Tragically, however, on June 30th, 1942, after some 1,054 Australian and New Zealand prisoners of war had been loaded onto the Japanese merchant ship Montevideo Maru at Rabaul harbor, bound for a prison camp on the Chinese island of Hainan, the vessel was sighted by the American submarine USS Sturgeon near the northern Philippine coast. While the Maru was initially traveling too fast for a successful torpedo attack, when the ship slowed to twelve knots around midnight, unaware that the ship was carrying Allied prisoners of war, the Sturgeon fired four torpedoes toward the transport ship. At least one torpedo found its mark, and while the ship went down in eleven minutes time, those Australian who had escaped the sinking Maru sang “Auld Lang Syne” to their comrades trapped inside the doomed ship, making the Japanese takeover of Rabaul, the worst defeat Australia would suffer during the Second World War.

After Allied war planners gave up on their objective of establishing a “secure fleet anchorage” on the South Pacific Island of New Britain—deeming the island indefensible under a full-scale Japanese attack—a garrison of Australian troops were tasked with the protection of a Royal Australian Air Force landing field at Rabaul, as well as a flying boat anchorage at nearby Simpson Harbor—assets vital to the Allies’ surveillance of Japanese troop movements in the region. Led by RAAF Wing Commander John Lerew, the contingent of men had little offensive capabilities, and when the garrison came under Japanese attack on January 4th, 1942, Lerew sent RAAF headquarters an old Roman gladiator saying, “Nos Morituri Te Salutamus,” or “we who are about to die salut you.”
On January 20th, over 100 Japanese war planes attacked Rabaul, quickly knocking out Australian coastal artillery defense, while forcing Australian soldiers to retreat from Rabaul into the forbidding dangers inherent within the island’s jungleous interior. Two days later, some 3 to 4,000 Japanese landed just off of New Ireland, while on January 23rd, an additional 5,000 took control of Simpson Harbor. On February 9th, the Japanese landed a force at Gasmata, effectively severing the Australian’s line of retreat, leading to the capture or surrender of more than 1,000 Allied soldiers.
Tragically, however, on June 30th, 1942, after some 1,054 Australian and New Zealand prisoners of war had been loaded onto the Japanese merchant ship Montevideo Maru at Rabaul harbor, bound for a prison camp on the Chinese island of Hainan, the vessel was sighted by the American submarine USS Sturgeon near the northern Philippine coast. While the Maru was initially traveling too fast for a successful torpedo attack, when the ship slowed to twelve knots around midnight, unaware that the ship was carrying Allied prisoners of war, the Sturgeon fired four torpedoes toward the transport ship. At least one torpedo found its mark, and while the ship went down in eleven minutes time, those Australian who had escaped the sinking Maru sang “Auld Lang Syne” to their comrades trapped inside the doomed ship, making the Japanese takeover of Rabaul, the worst defeat Australia would suffer during the Second World War.

They poured tens of thousands of troops, hundreds of airplanes, and thousands of tons of supplies and material into this base to make it a mighty fortress. The Allies' brilliant solution to the Rabaul conundrum was to isolate it, slowly starve it, and bypass it -- rather than assault it directly.
This dramatic, high impact documentary film shows some of the most memorable, exciting, and extensive footage of 5th Air Force B-25G bombers conducting tree top level attacks with machine guns and delayed action bombs to come out of World War 2 .The first step in the reduction of Rabaul was the seizure of a string of Japanese bases along the Northeast coast of New Guinea.
The film focuses on the decisive and revolutionary impact of the air component in the strategy, including high & low level attacks, parachute drops, and resupply, accompanied by a magnificent musical score drawn from Holst's "The Planets." You're literally sitting in the cockpit or in the tail gunners seat watching amazing low level attack runs. You'll also see P-38s, A-20s, B-25s and B-24 cooperating with US Australian and New Zealand Forces securing forward air bases to strike against Rabaul and for the invasion of New Britain. "Mission to Rabaul" shows how each piece of this classic strategy culminated inevitably in the first escorted, massed bomber strike on Rabaul on 12th October, 1943 an essential goal in the reduction of Japanese defenses.

In 1942, the Empire of Japan invaded the Australian-administered territories of the New Guinea Mandate. New Guinea was strategically important because it was a major landmass to the immediate north of Australia. This documentary film shows us the bitter struggle of the Australian and American soldiers to take back New Guinea during World War 2.
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND / CONTEXT
About the New Guinea campaign:
The New Guinea campaign of the Pacific War lasted from January 1942 until the end of the conflict in August 1945. In the initial phase in 1942, the Empire of Japan invaded the Australian-administered territories of the New Guinea Mandate (23 January) and Papua (8 March) and overran western New Guinea (beginning 29/30 March), which was a part of the Netherlands East Indies. In the second phase, the Allies cleared the Japanese first from Papua, then the Mandate and finally from the Dutch colony.
New Guinea was strategically important because it was a major landmass to the immediate north of Australia. Its large land area provided locations for large land, air and naval bases.
The campaign between Allied and Japanese forces commenced with the Japanese assault on Rabaul on 23 January 1942. Rabaul became the forward base for the Japanese campaigns in mainland New Guinea, including the pivotal Kokoda Track campaign of July 1942 – January 1943, and the Battle of Buna-Gona. Fighting in some parts of New Guinea continued until the war ended in August 1945.
General Douglas MacArthur as Supreme Commander in the South West Pacific Area, led the Allied forces. In 1942, the Empire of Japan invaded the Australian-administered territories of the New Guinea Mandate. New Guinea was strategically important because it was a major landmass to the immediate north of Australia. This documentary film shows us the bitter struggle of the Australian and American soldiers to take back New Guinea during World War 2.
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND / CONTEXT
About the New Guinea campaign:
The New Guinea campaign of the Pacific War lasted from January 1942 until the end of the conflict in August 1945. In the initial phase in 1942, the Empire of Japan invaded the Australian-administered territories of the New Guinea Mandate (23 January) and Papua (8 March) and overran western New Guinea (beginning 29/30 March), which was a part of the Netherlands East Indies. In the second phase, the Allies cleared the Japanese first from Papua, then the Mandate and finally from the Dutch colony.
New Guinea was strategically important because it was a major landmass to the immediate north of Australia. Its large land area provided locations for large land, air and naval bases.
The campaign between Allied and Japanese forces commenced with the Japanese assault on Rabaul on 23 January 1942. Rabaul became the forward base for the Japanese campaigns in mainland New Guinea, including the pivotal Kokoda Track campaign of July 1942 – January 1943, and the Battle of Buna-Gona. Fighting in some parts of New Guinea continued until the war ended in August 1945.

This incredible feat earned him the nickname "The Terror of Rabaul."
In the following two weeks, Hanson, one of the greatest pilots in the Pacific Theater, would go on to down 15 more.

The town has grown rapidly and the busy market, selling fresh produce, local cigars and betel nut, is located on the main road from Tokua Airport. The waterfront is the place to find boats for travel to the outer islands or for a spot of fishing.

Rabaul, a large natural harbor on the eastern end of the huge Island of New Britain was an essential strategic linchpin for the Japanese from which they could project their forces throughout the region. They poured tens of thousands of troops, hundreds of airplanes, and thousands of tons of supplies and material into this base to make it a mighty fortress. The Allies' brilliant solution to the Rabaul conundrum was to isolate it, slowly starve it, and bypass it -- rather than assault it directly.
This dramatic, high impact documentary film shows some of the most memorable, exciting, and extensive footage of 5th Air Force B-25G bombers conducting tree top level attacks with machine guns and delayed action bombs to come out of World War 2 .The first step in the reduction of Rabaul was the seizure of a string of Japanese bases along the Northeast coast of New Guinea.
The film focuses on the decisive and revolutionary impact of the air component in the strategy, including high & low level attacks, parachute drops, and resupply, accompanied by a magnificent musical score drawn from Holst's "The Planets." You're literally sitting in the cockpit or in the tail gunners seat watching amazing low level attack runs. You'll also see P-38s, A-20s, B-25s and B-24 cooperating with US Australian and New Zealand Forces securing forward air bases to strike against Rabaul and for the invasion of New Britain. "Mission to Rabaul" shows how each piece of this classic strategy culminated inevitably in the first escorted, massed bomber strike on Rabaul on 12th October, 1943 an essential goal in the reduction of Japanese defenses.

A special show to acknowledge the 80th anniversary of the Japanese landings at Rabaul. The Battle of Rabaul, also known by the Japanese as Operation R, was the instigating action of the New Guinea campaign, and was fought on the island of New Britain in the Australian Territory of New Guinea, from 23 January into February 1942.
My guest Phillip Bradley will also talk about Japanese massacred 160 Lark Force prisoners at Tol Plantation, on the southern coast of New Britain. Nearly 850 Lark Force prisoners of war were also killed on July 1, 1942, when an American submarine sank the Montevideo Maru, the Japanese “hell ship” upon which they were being transported.
Hell's Battlefield is Phillip Bradley's book that tells the whole story of the Australians against the Japanese in New Guinea during WWII, from invasion in 1942 to the brutal end game in 1945.

Today's Daily Dose short military history film covers Australia's defeat on the South Pacific island of New Britain, during the early years of World War Two. The filmmaker has included the original voice over script to further assist your understanding:
Today on The Daily Dose, Australia’s WWII Defeat at Rabaul.
After Allied war planners gave up on their objective of establishing a “secure fleet anchorage” on the South Pacific Island of New Britain—deeming the island indefensible under a full-scale Japanese attack—a garrison of Australian troops were tasked with the protection of a Royal Australian Air Force landing field at Rabaul, as well as a flying boat anchorage at nearby Simpson Harbor—assets vital to the Allies’ surveillance of Japanese troop movements in the region. Led by RAAF Wing Commander John Lerew, the contingent of men had little offensive capabilities, and when the garrison came under Japanese attack on January 4th, 1942, Lerew sent RAAF headquarters an old Roman gladiator saying, “Nos Morituri Te Salutamus,” or “we who are about to die salut you.”
On January 20th, over 100 Japanese war planes attacked Rabaul, quickly knocking out Australian coastal artillery defense, while forcing Australian soldiers to retreat from Rabaul into the forbidding dangers inherent within the island’s jungleous interior. Two days later, some 3 to 4,000 Japanese landed just off of New Ireland, while on January 23rd, an additional 5,000 took control of Simpson Harbor. On February 9th, the Japanese landed a force at Gasmata, effectively severing the Australian’s line of retreat, leading to the capture or surrender of more than 1,000 Allied soldiers.
Tragically, however, on June 30th, 1942, after some 1,054 Australian and New Zealand prisoners of war had been loaded onto the Japanese merchant ship Montevideo Maru at Rabaul harbor, bound for a prison camp on the Chinese island of Hainan, the vessel was sighted by the American submarine USS Sturgeon near the northern Philippine coast. While the Maru was initially traveling too fast for a successful torpedo attack, when the ship slowed to twelve knots around midnight, unaware that the ship was carrying Allied prisoners of war, the Sturgeon fired four torpedoes toward the transport ship. At least one torpedo found its mark, and while the ship went down in eleven minutes time, those Australian who had escaped the sinking Maru sang “Auld Lang Syne” to their comrades trapped inside the doomed ship, making the Japanese takeover of Rabaul, the worst defeat Australia would suffer during the Second World War.

This is one of the all time classic documentaries from World War 2 -- an action packed epic! You're literally sitting in the cockpit or in the tail gunners seat watching amazing low level attack runs. You'll also see P-38s, A-20s, B-25s and B-24 cooperating with US Australian and New Zealand Forces securing forward air bases to strike against Rabaul and for the invasion of New Britain. "Mission to Rabaul" shows how each piece of this classic strategy culminated inevitably in the first escorted, massed bomber strike on Rabaul on 12th October, 1943 an essential goal in the reduction of Japanese defenses.

In 1942, the Empire of Japan invaded the Australian-administered territories of the New Guinea Mandate. New Guinea was strategically important because it was a major landmass to the immediate north of Australia. This documentary film shows us the bitter struggle of the Australian and American soldiers to take back New Guinea during World War 2.
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND / CONTEXT
About the New Guinea campaign:
The New Guinea campaign of the Pacific War lasted from January 1942 until the end of the conflict in August 1945. In the initial phase in 1942, the Empire of Japan invaded the Australian-administered territories of the New Guinea Mandate (23 January) and Papua (8 March) and overran western New Guinea (beginning 29/30 March), which was a part of the Netherlands East Indies. In the second phase, the Allies cleared the Japanese first from Papua, then the Mandate and finally from the Dutch colony.
New Guinea was strategically important because it was a major landmass to the immediate north of Australia. Its large land area provided locations for large land, air and naval bases.
The campaign between Allied and Japanese forces commenced with the Japanese assault on Rabaul on 23 January 1942. Rabaul became the forward base for the Japanese campaigns in mainland New Guinea, including the pivotal Kokoda Track campaign of July 1942 – January 1943, and the Battle of Buna-Gona. Fighting in some parts of New Guinea continued until the war ended in August 1945.
General Douglas MacArthur as Supreme Commander in the South West Pacific Area, led the Allied forces. The Japanese 8th Area Army, under General Hitoshi Imamura, was responsible for both the New Guinea and Solomon Islands campaigns. The Japanese 18th Army, under Lieutenant General Hatazo Adachi, was responsible for Japanese operations on mainland New Guinea.
Liberating New Guinea:
After bombing the Australian harbour of Darwin in 1942, the Japanese moved their headquarters to Buna on the north coast of what is now Papua New Guinea and the headquarters of the Allies is set up in Port Moresby on the other side. These two towns were divided by the steep Owen Stanley mountain range and were connected by the Kokoda track across the mountains. Australian troops successfully defended Port Moresby along this trail, when the Japanese tried to invade from the north coast. To get the advantage, the Australian carved out 4000 steps into the mountain side.
The American army landed on New Guinea in January 1943 and started a major offensive. However, it took up until 1944 before the Americans could advance along the northern coast of New Guinea from Hollandia to Biak and Manokwari and on to the North Moluccas (Morotai) from where they attacked the Philippines in October 1944. In order to recapture New Guinea, the Allied Forces needed to drive the Japanese off along 2000 km of fortified coast line. During the battle 13000 Japanese soldiers lost their lives and on the Australian and American side there were respectively 2100 and 2000 casualties.

On January 14, 1944, the United States Marine Corps Aviation's Fighting Squadron 215, known as the Fighting Corsairs, was in the heat of a critical mission covering a flight of bombers targeting enemy shipping.
As Fighting Corsairs approached Simpson Harbor, Rabaul, a major Japanese stronghold, they were intercepted by a superior number of Japanese fighter aircraft. The skies erupted into a whirlwind of combat, with shells shooting out, explosions lighting up the already bright sky, radio chatter filled with urgent commands, and smoke trails from damaged aircraft.
Amidst the chaos, a single pilot found himself cut off from his squadron. But this was no ordinary man; this was First Lieutenant Robert Hanson.
Alone and facing overwhelming odds, Hanson didn't waver. Instead, he single-handedly engaged the enemy, destroying five aircraft despite being low on ammunition and fuel.
This incredible feat earned him the nickname "The Terror of Rabaul."
In the following two weeks, Hanson, one of the greatest pilots in the Pacific Theater, would go on to down 15 more.

Rabaul is a township in the East New Britain province of Papua New Guinea, on the island of New Britain. It lies about 600 kilometres to the east of the island of New Guinea. Rabaul was the provincial capital and most important settlement in the province until it was destroyed in 1994 by falling ash from a volcanic eruption in its harbour. During the eruption, ash was sent thousands of metres into the air, and the subsequent rain of ash caused 80% of the buildings in Rabaul to collapse. After the eruption the capital was moved to Kokopo, about 20 kilometres (12 mi) away. Rabaul is continually threatened by volcanic activity, because it is on the edge of the Rabaul caldera, a flooded caldera of a large pyroclastic shield.
Rabaul was planned and built around the harbour area known as Simpsonhafen (Simpson Harbour) during the German New Guinea administration, which controlled the region between 1884 and formally through 1919. Rabaul was selected as the capital of the German New Guinea administration in 1905, and the administrative offices were transferred there in 1910. Rabaul was captured by the British Empire during the early days of World War I. It became the capital of the Australian-mandated Territory of New Guinea until 1937, when it was first destroyed by a volcano. During World War II, it was captured by Japan in 1942 and became its main base of military and naval activity in the South Pacific. Settlements and military installations around the edge of the caldera are often collectively called Rabaul, although the old town of Rabaul was reduced to practical insignificance by the volcanic eruption in 1937.
As a tourist destination, Rabaul is popular for its volcanoes, scuba diving and for snorkelling sites, spectacular harbour and other scenery, World War II history, flora and fauna, and the cultural life of the Tolai people. Before the 1994 eruption, Rabaul was a popular commercial and recreational boating destination; fewer private small craft visit now, but 10 to 12 cruise ships visit Rabaul each year, including the Queen Elizabeth, carrying up to 2,000 passengers. Tourism is a major industry in Rabaul and East New Britain generally.

Rabaul is a treasure trove of World War Two relics, tunnels and caverns to explore within driving distance of Rabaul. Close to the now thriving centre of Kokopo, are the remnants of Gunantambu mansion, built in the 1880s by the legendary Queen Emma. After the eruption of Tavurvur and Vulcan in September 1994, most Rabaul services were relocated to Kokopo. The town has grown rapidly and the busy market, selling fresh produce, local cigars and betel nut, is located on the main road from Tokua Airport. The waterfront is the place to find boats for travel to the outer islands or for a spot of fishing.
