Kings and Generals animated historical documentary series on the Italian Wars continues with the aftermath of the battle of Fornovo 1495, as the French army left Italy. However that only increased the instability, leading to the 2nd and 3rd Italian Wars, more French involvement, Aragonese intervention, and the battles of Cerignola and Garigliano of 1503.

The 15th century was a turbulent time. The Hundred Years War had just ended and Constantinople fell to the Ottomans when a new conflict that would dominate European politics for centuries just started brewing. This was the rivalry between the Valois kings of France and the Habsburgs who ruled the Holy Roman Empire. The cause of the conflict was the Burgundian inheritance. When Charles the Bold, duke of Burgundy died without a male heir, Charles VIII, king of France contested Maximilian I, heir to the Holy Roman Empire for the vast Burgundian inheritance. The conflict inevitably moved to Italy, where Spain unified under Ferdinand and Isabella joined the conflict on the Habsburg side.
The Italian Wars was a series of conflicts that raged between 1494 and 1559 between the two major European powers, the Habsburgs who ruled the Holy Roman Empire and later Spain, and the Valois kings of France. At the height of the conflict the war involved Tudor England, the Ottoman Empire, Hungary, and all of Italy either as passive or active participants.
In terms of military tactics and strategy the Italian Wars saw the greatest innovations since the Roman Empire. Artillery finally came of age during the war prompting radical changes in terms of fortifications and battlefield tactics. Swiss pikemen, Landsknechts, and Spanish musketeers were amalgamated into a new type of standardized European infantry, the pike and shot formation. Cavalry although diminished in numbers, retained its place on the battlefield, being differentiated into heavy cavalry (men at arms), light cavalry and dragoons. In terms of strategy frontal medieval charges were replaced by careful maneuvering, the use of natural or man-made obstacles, and a keen attention to logistics. Commanders no longer fought in the front lines, but rather became managers of their armies. Politically the war shaped and reshaped the destinies of European countries for centuries to come.

How Rome Conquered Italy #1
===========
In a world where strategic alliances and territorial disputes could alter history, long before Rome conquered the known world, before the legends of Hannibal and the fall of Carthage, before Rome became the undisputed master of the Mediterranean, there was a series of fierce and defining conflicts that set the stage for its eventual dominance.
In the rugged hills of central Italy, in the late 4th century BC, Rome clashed with the Samnites, a formidable group of mountain warriors. What began as a seemingly minor fight for land evolved into an epic saga of dominance, identity, and survival, now known as the Samnite Wars.
But why is this crucial conflict so often overshadowed in world history? Stay with us until the end to uncover how this early war set the stage for the epic conquests to come and why it deserves to be remembered as a cornerstone in the history of Rome. Trust me, you won't want to miss it.
Samnite Wars: How Rome Conquered Italy #1
In the early centuries of the first millennium BC, the territory of the Roman Republic extended to the River Liri, which served as a natural boundary separating the Romans from their southern neighbors residing in the Apennine Mountains. Within this mountainous region lay Samnium, located in south-central Italy.
Samnite Wars: How Rome Conquered Italy #1
The Samnites were part of a larger group of Italic tribes, descending from Indo-European populations that migrated into the Italian peninsula during the late Bronze Age and early Iron Age. The rugged terrain provided them with natural defenses and essential resources for their way of life. Each tribe had its own local leaders, but they would unite for collective decisions, fostering a strong sense of communal loyalty and independence, traits integral to their culture.
While the Romans were known for their disciplined legions, the Samnites distinguished themselves with their guerrilla warfare tactics and fierce dedication to their ancestral traditions. Young Samnite men were trained from childhood in the art of combat, and their warrior culture was deeply ingrained. They employed a unique fighting style, utilizing a distinctive weapon known as the "Samnite sword," a short, double-edged blade ideal for close combat. Their military formations, known as "Samnite phalanxes," featured dense, interlocking shields that provided superior protection and mobility on the battlefield, marking them as one of the fiercest tribes of their time.
Samnite Wars: How Rome Conquered Italy #1
The need for additional resources and fertile land, driven by their agrarian lifestyle, growing population, and the limitations of their rugged terrain, spurred their desire to conquer neighboring territories. Starting in the 5th century BC, various Italic tribes, including the Samnites, began moving out of the mountains in search of fertile lands near the coast.
Samnite Wars: How Rome Conquered Italy #1
In the early 4th century BC, the Samnites began making forays into Campania, one of the most fertile regions in Italy even until today. This rich land, essential for agriculture, had become a coveted prize due to its ability to sustain a large population and alleviate the frequent famines. The Samnites, battle-hardened and resilient, constituted a considerable threat to the more rich but less militarily equipped Capuans, whose life on the fertile plains had softened them and left them vulnerable.
