Battery Management System for Electric Vehicles | BMS
Hi everyone!!
In this video we will understand Battery Management System (BMS) in electric vehicles. Battery Management System is an electronic system that monitors and controls rechargeable battery to make sure that it operates safely and efficiently.
BMS monitors each cell of battery pack for current, voltage, temperature. It runs several control algorithms and produces outputs like State of Charge (SOC), State of Health (SOH), Information related to Thermal Management and Power Management. BMS also communicates the information with other ECUs and displays the important parameters.
Some of the key responsibilities of BMS are:
1. Cell Monitoring
2. Power Management
3. Electric Vehicle Safety
4. Diagnostics

The working of the BMS in short -
The primary purpose of the BMS is to -
To monitor the battery;
To protect the battery.
To estimate the battery state.
To maximize the battery performance.
To report to users and/or external devices.
The BMS does this by measuring the cell voltage, the temperature of the cell & the cell current. The BMS collects all the data from these parameters & uses its in-built algorithm to estimate parameters such as the battery voltage, state of charge, state of health, temperature, capacity & other critical measurements.
For example, Imagine if the battery voltage rises more than its recommended value, then the battery management system automatically cuts off the charging.
Another essential functionality the BMS performs is intelligent cell balancing, wherein the battery voltage is equalized to improve capacity. Also, these concepts will be explored in detail in our future videos.
Finally, the BMS should be able to communicate the data or report to users and/or external devices, such as the vehicle ECU, using communication protocols such as CAN Bus, RS 485, UART etc.

In this video we will understand Battery Management System (BMS) in electric vehicles. Battery Management System is an electronic system that monitors and controls rechargeable battery to make sure that it operates safely and efficiently.
BMS monitors each cell of battery pack for current, voltage, temperature. It runs several control algorithms and produces outputs like State of Charge (SOC), State of Health (SOH), Information related to Thermal Management and Power Management. BMS also communicates the information with other ECUs and displays the important parameters.
Some of the key responsibilities of BMS are:
1. Cell Monitoring
2. Power Management
3. Electric Vehicle Safety
4. Diagnostics
