Batik (Javanese pronunciation:[ˈbateʔ]; Indonesian:[ˈbatɪk]) is a technique of wax-resistdyeing applied to whole cloth, or cloth made using this technique. Batik is made either by drawing dots and lines of the resist with a spouted tool called a canting (IPA:[ʈ͡ʂantiŋ], also spelled tjanting), or by printing the resist with a copper stamp called a cap (IPA:[ʈ͡ʂap], also spelled tjap). The applied wax resists dyes and therefore allows the artisan to colour selectively by soaking the cloth in one colour, removing the wax with boiling water, and repeating if multiple colours are desired.
A tradition of making batik is found in various countries, including Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, India, Sri Lanka, Philippines and Nigeria; the batik of Indonesia, however, is the best-known. Indonesian batik made in the island of Java has a long history of acculturation, with diverse patterns influenced by a variety of cultures, and is the most developed in terms of pattern, technique, and the quality of workmanship. On October 2009, UNESCO designated Indonesian batik as a Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
Batik is a pure-Java library that can be used to render, generate, and manipulate SVG graphics. (SVG is an XML markup language for describing two-dimensional vector graphics.) IBM supported the project and then donated the code to the Apache Software Foundation, where other companies and teams decided to join efforts.
Batik provides a set of core modules that provide functionality to:
Batik is an album by guitarist Ralph Towner recorded in 1978 and released on the ECM label.
Reception
The Allmusic review by Scott Yanow awarded the album 4 stars stating "The music unfolds slowly but logically, and Towner's quiet sound displays a lot of inner heat... Well worth listening to closely, at a high volume".

Batik of Java: A Centuries Old Tradition
Watch Javanese artisans make batik and learn more about their refined techniques. Many places in the world pattern textiles by applying wax to protect certain areas from dye. During the dye process, the wax areas resist the dye, and when the wax is removed a pattern emerges. Both the technique and the textile produced are called batik. Nowhere in the world is this method of patterning textiles as highly refined as in Indonesia.

This video is for folks who have never heard of a tjanting tool, never seen a tjanting tool, or just want to know a little bit more about how they work.
These are a very traditional shape of batik tool, used to draw with hot wax on fabric. In their simplest form they are just metal bowls on a handle with a tiny spout! The bigger the spout, the faster the wax will flow out of the tool.
They can have sort of a steep learning curve because they can be drippy and splashy at first, and they’re sort of notoriously hard to control, but if you embrace the drips & splashes and try to let go of perfectionism you’ll have a much more enjoyable time doing batik in this way. Let it flow!
Of course if you get nervous you can always use a paintbrush instead. I like to utilize both tjanting tools and paintbrushes in my work.
The absolute key here is that the wax can flow through to the back of the fabric, so it needs to be hot enough to penetrate all the way through the fabric.

Local artisans demonstrate the traditional batik-making process including sketching, applying wax and dying the fabric. This technique originated in Indonesia's Java, but has spread to other areas, most notably Malaysia, Bali, India and Sri Lanka.
