Future of the Game: Baseball's Latest Statistical Revolution
It started with batting average, home runs and RBIs. Then sabermetrics came along and introduced a new set of results-driven statistics. But results only tell half the story, and the new revolution in baseball analytics goes one step deeper to measure the actual physicality of the players – exit velocity off the bat, spin rate on a pitcher's curveball, efficiency of an outfielder's route to a fly ball, and a ton more.
FUTURE OF THE GAME is a new series exploring the cutting edge in sports technology, co-produced with our pals at VICE's tech channel Motherboard. In this inaugural episode we meet the architects of MLB Statcast, a new initiative using the same technology that tracks debris during the launch of space shuttles to change the way we watch baseball on TV and give overlooked tale...

Batting Average | Baseball Explained
Batting average is arguably the most well-known statistic in all of sports. It's also one of the oldest. But while the stat carries a large amount of historical significance, its usefulness has come under question in recent years.
In this edition of baseball explained, I look at the historical context of batting average, as well as how it is calculated. I also talk about how newer stats have become more accepted and how batting average doesn't do as good a job as some may think.

Baseball stats like AVG and ERA are easy to lie with, because they aren't park-adjusted stats or era-adjusted stats like OPS+ or ERA+. Baseball defensive metrics are can also be used to obfuscate the truth. Fielding Percentage is a bad stat, but even Defensive Runs Saved and Statcast Outs Above Average can be manipulated for the narrative.
And that's honestly what we're doing here: playing narrativeball. We're taking a look at MLB players like Ken Griffey Jr., Jacob deGrom, Dustin Pedroia, Craig Biggio, Yordan Alvarez, Jeff Conine, and even player from many years ago named Roy Cullenbine. Indeed, what happened to 1947 Roy Cullenbine ties in with a point I'm making.
I hope you'll all enjoy this episode of Baseball Bits, a Foolish Baseball production that has absolutely nothing to do with Tesla. Hopefully you'll learn how to use baseball analytics and baseball sabermetrics to spot baseball lies in the future.

In this inaugural episode we meet the architects of MLB Statcast, a new initiative using the same technology that tracks debris during the launch of space shuttles to change the way we watch baseball on TV and give overlooked talent a second change to stick in the Major Leagues.
