The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum is an American history museum and hall of fame, located at 25 Main Street in Cooperstown, New York, and operated by private interests. It serves as the central point for the study of the history of baseball in the United States and beyond, displays baseball-related artifacts and exhibits, and honors those who have excelled in playing, managing, and serving the sport. The Hall's motto is "Preserving History, Honoring Excellence, Connecting Generations."
The word Cooperstown is often used as shorthand (or a metonym) for the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum.
History
The Hall of Fame was founded in 1939 by Stephen Carlton Clark, the owner of a local hotel. Clark had sought to bring tourists to a city hurt by the Great Depression, which reduced the local tourist trade, and Prohibition, which devastated the local hops industry. A new building was constructed, and the Hall of Fame was dedicated on June 12, 1939. (Clark's granddaughter, Jane Forbes Clark, is the current chairman of the Board of Directors.)
Elections to the Baseball Hall of Fame for 1988 followed the system in place since 1978.
The Baseball Writers Association of America (BBWAA) voted by mail to select from recent major league players and
elected Willie Stargell.
The Veterans Committee met in closed sessions to consider older major league players as well as managers, umpires, executives, and figures from the Negro Leagues.
It selected no one.
BBWAA election
The BBWAA was authorized to elect players active in 1968 or later, but not after 1982; the ballot included candidates from the 1987 ballot who received at least 5% of the vote but were not elected, along with selected players, chosen by a screening committee, whose last appearance was in 1982. All 10-year members of the BBWAA were eligible to vote.
Voters were instructed to cast votes for up to 10 candidates; any candidate receiving votes on at least 75% of the ballots would be honored with induction to the Hall. The ballot consisted of 44 players; a total of 427 ballots were cast, with 321 votes required for election. A total of 2,819 individual votes were cast, an average of 6.60 per ballot. Those candidates receiving less than 5% of the vote will not appear on future BBWAA ballots, but may eventually be considered by the Veterans Committee.
Baseball Hall Of Fame Denies Curt Schilling's Request To Be Removed From Ballot
Curt Schilling fell just short of enshrinement in the Baseball Hall of Fame this year. Prior to learning the results of this year's voting, Schilling politely asked the Hall of Fame to remove his name from the ballot next year, which will be Schilling's final year of eligibility. Geoff Petrulis reports.

🗣️ From Rick Ferrell's 1984 Hall of Fame inductee speech (via @baseballhall)
🔒 An eight-time All-Star, he retired with an American League record at the time of 1,806 games caught. Ferrell's durability behind the plate was unmatched until Carlton Fisk surpassed him in 1988.
🌪️ In the 1940s, he faced the ultimate catching challenge, handling a quartet of knuckleballers. Despite the unpredictable pitches, he navigated the mental heat with skill.
🤝 Teaming up with his brother Wes, Ferrell's .281 career average over 18 seasons alsoshowcased his ability to handle the bat, topping the .300 mark four times.

Andre Dawson voted into the BASEBALL HALL OF FAME! Finally, Cooperstown, here we come!
Andre Dawson, come 2010, had been on the Baseball Hall of Fame ballot for nine years. Finally, in 2010, the baseball writers did what they should have done long before: elected Dawson into the Hall! This is a quick video I made when I got home after hearing the news regarding The Hawk being elected to the Hall of Fame. Can't wait to see the induction in person come July! Congratulations Andre Dawson!
