The Vale of Glamorgan (Welsh:Bro Morgannwg[ˈbroː mɔrˈɡanʊɡ]) is a county borough in Wales. The Vale of Glamorgan has an agricultural industry and is the southernmost unitary authority in Wales. The Vale of Glamorgan, sometimes known locally as "the Vale", has a rich history and geography.
The largest town is Barry. Other towns include Penarth, Llantwit Major and Cowbridge. There are many villages in the county borough. The Vale of Glamorgan was revealed to be the wealthiest area in Wales in a 2003 survey conducted by Barclays Bank that measured disposable income.
Geography
The Vale of Glamorgan has been a county borough (unitary authority) since 1996: before that it was part of South Glamorgan county. The largest centre of population is Barry. Other towns include Cowbridge, Dinas Powys, Llantwit Major and Penarth, but much of the population inhabits villages, hamlets and individual farms. The area is low-lying, with a greatest height of 137 metres (449ft) above sea level.
In general elections for the National Assembly for Wales, each voter has two votes. The first vote may be used to vote for a candidate to become the Assembly Member for the voter's constituency, elected by the first past the post system. The second vote may be used to vote for a regional closed party list of candidates. Additional member seats are allocated from the lists by the d'Hondt method, with constituency results being taken into account in the allocation.
Barry (Welsh:Y Barri) is a town in the Vale of Glamorgan, Wales, on the north coast of the Bristol Channel approximately 7 miles (11km) south-southwest of Cardiff. Barry is a seaside resort, with attractions including several beaches and formerly Barry Island Pleasure Park. Once a small village, Barry has absorbed its larger neighbouring villages of Cadoxton and Barry Island. It grew significantly from the 1880s with the development of Barry Docks, which in 1913 was the largest coal port in the world.
The place was possibly named after Saint Baruc. However another explanation is that it comes from the Welsh "bar" meaning a hill or rise. Therefore the Welsh name, Y Barri, means The Hills. Given Barry's geography, it is an apt description. The first reference to it being named after St Baruc is from Giraldus Cambriensis (Gerald of Wales). Gerald was himself from Barry and describes the area thus:
It is something of a bellwether, having been won by the party with a plurality of seats in every general election since the seat was created in 1983.
Boundaries
1983-2010: The Borough of Vale of Glamorgan wards of Baruc, Buttrills, Cadoc, Castleland, Court, Cowbridge, Dinas Powys, Dyfan, Gibbonsdown, Illtyd, Llandow, Llantwit Major, Peterson-super-Ely, Rhoose, St Athan, Sully, and Wenvoe.
2010-present: The Vale of Glamorgan County Borough electoral divisions of Baruc, Buttrills, Cadoc, Castleland, Court, Cowbridge, Dinas Powys, Dyfan, Gibbonsdown, Illtyd, Llandow and Ewenny, Llantwit Major, Peterston-super-Ely, Rhoose, St Athan, St Bride’s Major, and Wenvoe.
Although initially a rural and pastoral area of little value, the area that became known as Glamorgan was a conflict point between the Norman lords and the Welsh princes, with the area being defined by a large concentration of castles. After falling under English rule in the 16th century, Glamorgan became a more stable county, and exploited its natural resources to become an important part of the Industrial Revolution. Glamorgan was the most populous and industrialised county in Wales, and was once called the "crucible of the Industrial Revolution," as it contained the world centres of three metallurgical industries and its rich resources of coal.
Located to the immediate west of Cardiff, the Vale of Glamorgan tend to get overlooked by visitors. But locals will tell you the pretty villages, spectacular coastline and rolling green countryside are perfect any time of year.

Throughout the property there are clues as to its age and history, but it still manages to have a modern comfortable homely feel about it. The versatile accommodation comprises of three double bedrooms on the first floor with the principle bedroom benefiting from a lovely en-suite shower room, while the other two bedrooms share a delightful house bathroom. Downstairs there are two reception rooms and a large study, which has an adjacent shower room meaning it could easily be used as a fourth bedroom, while the second reception could even possibly be a fifth bedroom if needed, or this entire area could be used as an annex. There is also a dining room, lovely fitted kitchen and utility. Outside there are lovely gardens on three sides of the house, to the South is the largest of the gardens which is laid to lawn with well established fruit trees and shrubs, the far end of the garden has a woodland feel and is currently home to a flock of chickens, to the East is a lovely seating area – perfect for entertaining. To the North is a fab detached stone garage and barn, currently being used to provide a home for Goats, who have the run of the smaller lawn garden beyond.
