Stories of Ukrainian Jews. Barney Balaban
For all the popularity of cinema at the beginning of the twentieth century, revenues of movie theaters depended for a long time on the year season. In summer, no matter how good the movie was, attracting spectators to watch it was an impossible task due to the stuffy heat in the hall.
Barney Balaban and his brother-in-law Sam Katz figured out how to win back patrons. They used powerful fans blowing over cakes of ice in washtubs to keep them pleasantly cool. However, their invention had one significant flaw: as the ice melted, the air currents turned from a refreshing breeze into a shower, therefore, by their order, the engineers created an industrial system that blew dry cooled air.
It was in 1917, and the Balaban & Katz Theater Chain became the first air-conditioned theaters in the world,...

Bob Balaban tells us what he can about the new Wes Anderson and learning “Smelly Cat” on the fly
Bob Balaban was born into the movie business: His uncles owned the Balaban And Katz Theater group in Chicago, which ran both the massive Chicago and Uptown Theaters as movie palaces, and one of them, Barney Balaban, was the president of Paramount Pictures at the time of Bob’s birth. Bob Balaban’s father, Elmer, owned theaters like the Esquire in Chicago as well, and would later become one of the early players in the cable television game.
Bob Balaban has been active in television and film since he was 20, when he first popped up on a 1965 episode of Hank, a show about a college lunch wagon operator who sits in on classes in the hopes of getting a little smarter. Balaban also appeared in 1969’s Midnight Cowboy and 1970’s Catch-22 before taking on roles both on-screen and in the writers roo...

However, their invention had one significant flaw: as the ice melted, the air currents turned from a refreshing breeze into a shower, therefore, by their order, the engineers created an industrial system that blew dry cooled air.
It was in 1917, and the Balaban & Katz Theater Chain became the first air-conditioned theaters in the world, and Barney Balaban was later invited to head the Paramount Pictures film company, which he had been running for nearly 30 years.
Barney's younger brother, A.J., has also contributed to the increase in theaters attendance. He proposed and organized performances of orchestras in the foyer and turned film screenings into real shows. Although this practice is used today only at pre-premiere screenings, until the end of the last century, performances of musical bands in cinemas were commonplace.
When television broadcasting began to develop, the Balaban brothers took part also in this direction. They were among the first to establish cable broadcasting networks.
Today, the youngest of the Balaban dynasty, Bob, is a successful Hollywood actor, director and screenwriter. It all began at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, when parents of the future innovators of show business moved to the United States from Odessa and opened a grocery store in Chicago, wrote Boris Lozhkin on Facebook.

He’s since gone on to write movies like 2001’s Gosford Park, and direct everything from episodes of Eerie, Indiana to Nurse Jackie and Strangers With Candy. We talked to him on the set of Condor, a fascinating TV thriller adapted from the novel Six Days Of The Condor by James Grady. The show originally premiered on the Audience Network, but its second season is currently in streaming limbo, but will hopefully find a place to land later this year.
Though we’ve talked with Balaban before for a Random Roles feature, it’s been a few years, and we thought it would be fun to get some of his remembrances on camera. You can read Sam Adams’ 2012 interview with Balaban here, and check out our more recent talk below. Some highlights from the latest interview can be found in the video above.

Jonathan (Bob Balaban) harasses Lawrence (Michael Hitchcock) about some minor details before the concert.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
The writing and directing team who created Waiting For Guffman and Best In Show turn their satiric eye toward the world of folk music in this sly mockumentary. Irving Steinbloom was one of the great behind-the-scenes figures of the folk music boom of the late '50s and early '60s, and helped to nurture the careers of three of the best known acts of the era. The Folksmen -- Mark Shubb (Harry Shearer), Alan Barrows (Christopher Guest), and Jerry Palter (Michael McKean) -- were an earnest folk trio who sang of America's noble past and the challenges of the future; they split up in the early '70s after a failed attempt to go electric. Mitch & Mickey were a duo in both music and life, comprised of Mitch Cohen (Eugene Levy) and Mickey Devlin (Catherine O'Hara). They sang soulful songs of love until the collapse of their relationship sent Mitch into a deep and incapacitating depression. And The Main Street Singers were a nine-piece vocal group -- a "neuftet," as they prefer it -- who offered energetic good-time music, cranking out nearly 30 albums in the course of a decade; their current incarnation, The New Main Street Singers (played by Jane Lynch, Parker Posey, John Michael Higgins, David Alan Blasucci, Steve Pandis, Christopher Moynihan, Paul Dooley and Patrick Sauber) is still on the road. When it is announced that the legendary Irving Steinbloom has died (the character never appears in the film), his son Jonathan (Bob Balaban) decides that the best way to memorialize his father is through music, and with the help of Mike LaFontaine (Fred Willard) of Hi-Class Management, they set out to bring The Folksmen, Mitch & Mickey, and The New Main Street Singers back together for a special concert at New York's Town Hall. Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, and Harry Shearer -- who previously teamed up for This Is Spinal Tap -- not only perform together as The Folksmen in A Mighty Wind, but composed most of the songs performed onscreen.
