Ballymoney has expanded in recent years and a lot of new houses have been built. This is primarily as a result of high house prices in the Coleraine/Portstewart/Portrush 'Triangle' areas shifting first-time buyers to the less expensive Ballymoney area. Ballymoney is located on the main road between Coleraine and Ballymena, with good road and rail connections to the main cities in Northern Ireland, Belfast and Derry.
The Ballymoney area has the highest life expectancy of any area in Northern Ireland, with the average male life expectancy at birth being 78.9 years and 84.8 years for females in years between 2010 to 2012. Conversely, it was revealed in 2013 that Ballymoney residents are more likely to die from heart disease than anywhere else in Northern Ireland.
Ballymoney is one of twenty-six districts created on 1 October 1973. It took over the areas Ballymoney Urban District Council and most of the surrounding Ballymoney Rural District in County Antrim.

Ballymoney is a small town and civil parish in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. It is currently served by Ballymoney Borough Council. The civil parish of Ballymoney is situated in the historic baronies of Dunluce Upper and Kilconway in County Antrim, and the barony of North East Liberties of Coleraine in County Londonderry.
Ballymoney has expanded in recent years and a lot of new houses have been built. Ballymoney is located on the main road between Coleraine and Ballymena, with good road and rail connections to the main cities in Northern Ireland, Belfast and Derry.

Conversely, it was revealed in 2013 that Ballymoney residents are more likely to die from heart disease than anywhere else in Northern Ireland. The town hosts the Ballymoney Drama Festival, the oldest drama festival in Ireland, which was founded in 1933. The town also hosts the Ballymoney Show, which is one of the oldest agricultural shows in Northern Ireland and was founded in 1902.
Ballymoney is one of the oldest towns in Ireland with many buildings of historic note in the town centre.
An old church tower dating from 1637 is the town's oldest surviving building.
Another striking feature is the town clock and Masonic hall, built in 1775 by the 6th Earl and 2nd Marquis of Antrim. The hall was used as a market house, courthouse, town hall and school.
The town hall was erected in 1866.
Ballymoney railway station opened on 4 December 1855, and was closed to goods traffic on 4 January 1965. The refurbished railway station was opened in May 1990. It was one terminus of the Ballycastle Railway, a narrow gauge railway which ran 17 miles connecting Ballycastle to Ballymoney, on the Belfast and Northern Counties Railway (BNCR), later Northern Counties Committee (NCC), main line to Derry, and closed in July 1950.

Orange Order marchers were met with black flags and black balloons as the Protestants paraded through a Catholic area of Belfast on Monday.
On Lower Ormeau Road, nationalist protests took on the somber atmosphere of a funeral.
The mood in Northern Ireland has remained dark since a petrol attack killed three young brothers in the town of Ballymoney on Sunday.
Northern Ireland has twisted between anger and despair since three Catholic boys were burned alive in a petrol bomb attack as they slept in their beds Sunday morning.
Suspected Protestant activists launched the arson attack in Ballymoney, at a mainly protestant housing complex.
Three brothers Richard Quinn 10, Mark, nine, and Jason, eight, were burned alive.
Neighbours have no doubt the killings are related to the week-long standoff at Drumcree and the bitter dispute between nationalists and loyalists.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"I was at home in bed. I was woken up by the shouts and screams at half past four. People were shouting for ladders. I looked out the window and I saw flames coming from the house and just at that time the fire brigade arrived and did everything they could to try to get into the house. They were very efficient but it was just too late.
Q- Why do you think this family was targeted?
A- Well it has to be associated with what was going on at Drumcree. Loosely associated, there have been many instances of petrol bombing throughout the province over the last week and individuals or a small group of individuals, have done the same thing and got it into their head to attack a Catholic family on this estate, purely sectarian hatred."
SUPER CAPTION: Richard Rogers, neighbour and member of the Progressive Unionist Party
Over the past few years, the marching season in Northern Ireland has come to symbolise the political and religious divisions that have caused strife for generations.
But on Monday, Protestant Orangemen shied away from confrontation during their marches, weighed down by their own bitter divisions and subdued by the shock of the deaths.
