Marsden was born at 8 Menzies Street, Toxteth, Liverpool, Merseyside, and his interest in music began at an early age. He remembers standing on top of an air raid shelter singing "Ragtime Cowboy Joe" and getting a great reception from onlookers.
Gerry and the Pacemakers was the second group signed by Brian Epstein and remained among his favourite artists. Their first single was "How Do You Do It," recommended by George Martin after it was initially given to the Beatles. This was the first number one hit for the Pacemakers. It was recorded at Abbey Road Studios and was released on EMI's Columbia label. Marsden said the recording took four or five takes. The group's second number one was "I Like It", followed by "You'll Never Walk Alone". Other singles included "It's Gonna Be Alright", "I'm the One," "Don't Let the Sun Catch You Crying," and "Ferry Cross the Mersey."
On July 23, 2010, the first promotional single "Letting Go (Dutty Love)" featuring Nicki Minaj was released. On August 3, 2010, the music video was released for "Letting Go (Dutty Love)" featuring Nicki Minaj. On September 7, 2010, the second promotional single "Dumb Love" was released. On December 21, 2010, the third promotional single "Party All Night (Sleep All Day)" was released. On December 23, 2010, the music video was released for "Party All Night (Sleep All Day)". On June 5, 2012, the first single "Back 2 Life (Live It Up)" featuring T.I. was released. On June 8, 2012, the music video was released for "Back 2 Life (Live It Up)" featuring T.I. On November 16, 2012, the fourth promotional single "Rum and Raybans" featuring Cher Lloyd was released. On November 18, 2012, the music video was released for "Rum and Raybans" featuring Cher Lloyd. On April 15, 2013, the second single "Beat It" featuring Chris Brown and Wiz Khalifa was released. On April 29, 2013, the music video was released for "Beat It" featuring Chris Brown and Wiz Khalifa. On September 10, 2013, the music video was released for "Seasonal Love" featuring Wale.

Gerry & The Pacemakers You'll Never Walk Alone
"You'll Never Walk Alone" is a show tune from the 1945 Rodgers and Hammerstein musical Carousel.
In the second act of the musical, Nettie Fowler, the cousin of the female protagonist Julie Jordan, sings "You'll Never Walk Alone" to comfort and encourage Julie when her husband, Billy Bigelow, the male lead, kills himself to avoid capture during a failed robbery. It is reprised in the final scene to encourage a graduation class of which Louise (Billy and Julie's daughter) is a member. The now invisible Billy, who has been granted the chance to return to Earth for one day in order to redeem himself, watches the ceremony and is able to silently motivate the unhappy Louise to join in the song.
