Visualisation of the new Catalogue of Nearby Stars 5
This is a visualization of the updated Catalogue of Nearby Stars 5 (CNS5), featuring stellar systems located within a distance of 25 parsecs or 81.5 lightyears from the Sun.
It is based on the paper "The Fifth Catalogue of Nearby Stars (CNS5) " by Alex Golovin, Sabine Reffert, Andreas Just, Stefan Jordan, Akash Vani, and Hartmut Jahreiß,
accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics.
The animation, created using Gaia Sky, begins with a flyover view of the Milky Way galaxy before transitioning to a close-up of the stars listed in the CNS5. It also illustrates the movement of these stars as measured by the Gaia and Hipparcos satellites as well as a few Earth-bound observations.
The region within 25 parsecs of the Sun, known as the immediate solar neighborhood, is a unique and d...

Gaia is scanning the sky for its second star catalogue
Gaias second star catalogue is a great success and was published on April 25, 2018. More than three scientific papers per day were published based on this data release.
The measurements were taken between July 25, 2014 and May 23, 2016. In this period of time Gaia scanned the sky in different directions so that a full map with more than 1.3 billion positions, movements, and parallaxes (distances) of the stars could be created.
The video shows how the orientation of Gaia changed in this period of time. Animation time is three million times faster than in reality.
The visualization was created by Stefan Jordan and Toni Sagristá with the program Gaia Sky (http://www.zah.uni-heidelberg.de/gaia...).

The region within 25 parsecs of the Sun, known as the immediate solar neighborhood, is a unique and diverse mixture of stellar populations. It has served as a testbed for various concepts and theories, which can be applied and extended to other regions of our Galaxy that are more difficult to observe directly.

Here is an online spreadsheet you can use to organize the POIs and other things you might want to find in your playthrough, but can't because there's no way to search the registry in-game.
This version is meant for those playing on a server and cannot access the global.db file. The downside is that you will have to enter everything manually. The upside is, you can choose what to put in and how much, and this version doesn't require downloading files or enabling AppScripts in Google Drive.
As always, the Star Catalogue consists of three tools that work together to help you find POIs, locations, or anything else you have entered and want to find. It will also help you organize your trading missions, so you know what traders sell what and who else might buy or sell something. Enter your current system and what POI you would like to find and it will tell you what system and playfield they can be found in, as well as how far away each one is and what vendors (if any) can be found at that POI (this last bit is thanks to the always-useful RE Traders spreadsheet).
The new Commodity Finder will also tell you which traders at the closest POI will sell/buy what items.
Get the sheet here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Wtsq0BdPhrnn-O-soEXhQG--EZnrhXODEc3JTinvMmk/edit?usp=sharing
Setup and use instructions are covered in the video and also in the spreadsheet.

Gaia Sky is an open source program for Linux, Windows and Mac.
