In September 2012, the UK government established the Airports Commission, an independent commission chaired by Sir Howard Davies to examine various options for increasing capacity at UK airports. The commission shortlisted two options for expanding Heathrow in its interim report in 2013, along with a third option for expanding Gatwick Airport. The final report, published on 1 July 2015, backed a third runway at Heathrow.
Myrtle Avenue has been a major thoroughfare since the early 19th century, named after the myrtle trees that were plentiful in the area. Most likely, Myrtle Avenue began in Queens and was a plank road that charged a toll. The road eventually hosted the Knickerbocker Stage Coach Line, that ran stagecoach and omnibus services. After World War I, Myrtle Avenue in Glendale was a popular destination for picnickers. With a steam trolley running on the avenue, and its ample adjacent beer gardens and park space, people from as far as Eastern Brooklyn came to Myrtle. In the mid-1920s, the parks closed as a result of Prohibition. Ultimately, the parks became incorporated by the city into what is known today as Forest Park.
Currently, Myrtle Avenue is one of the primary shopping strips of Ridgewood, along with Fresh Pond Road whose south end is at Myrtle Avenue. It is also the primary shopping strip in nearby Glendale, although this stretch of Myrtle Avenue isn't as busy as the Ridgewood stretch. It was also home to the Ridgewood Theatre, which was the longest continuously operated theater in the United States, having operated for 91 years before its closure in March 2008.
The Myrtle Avenue Line, also called the Myrtle Avenue Elevated, is a fully elevated line of the New York City Subway as part of the BMT division. The line is the last surviving remnant of one of the original Brooklyn elevated railroads. The remnant line operates as a spur branch from the Jamaica Line to Bushwick, Ridgewood and Middle Village, terminating at its original Eastern terminal across the street from Lutheran Cemetery. Until 1969, the line continued west into Downtown Brooklyn and until 1944, over the Brooklyn Bridge to a terminal at Park Row in Manhattan.
Extent and service
The Myrtle Avenue Line is currently served by the M service. The line begins at Metropolitan Avenue in Middle Village, Queens. It heads southwest along a private right-of-way, eventually joining an elevated structure above Palmetto Street in Ridgewood and Myrtle Avenue in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Bushwick. Just before reaching Broadway (on which the BMT Jamaica Line operates), the line curves to the left and merges into the Jamaica Line tracks just east of Myrtle Avenue. The upper level of the station, which was called "Broadway", opened in 1889 and closed on October 4, 1969, still exists.
Myrtle Avenue Line may refer to the following public transit lines:
BMT Myrtle Avenue Line, a fully elevated line of the New York City Subway, the last surviving remnant of one of the original Brooklyn elevated railroads
Myrtle Avenue Line (surface), a surface transit line on Myrtle Avenue, Brooklyn, New York; the first streetcar line in Brooklyn, now a bus route
Richmond Hill Line, a surface transit line on Myrtle Avenue in Queens, New York; originally a streetcar line, it was replaced in 1950 by a bus route
Myrtle Avenue is an abandoned local station on the Manhattan Bridge subway tracks (BDNQ trains) south of the bridge in Brooklyn, New York City, United States. This underground station, opened on June 22, 1915, and closed in 1956 for the reconstruction of the flying junction north of DeKalb Avenue to increase capacity for the entire BMT subway line.
The Brooklyn-bound platform was removed completely, but the Manhattan-bound platform still exists.
This station was a casualty of the rebuild. A new track had to be added on the west side to allow for a grade-separated crossing. The original southbound "local" track at the platform had to be depressed to a lower grade to cross under, and the new track wiped out the southbound platform. The northbound platform was left in place but no longer operated for passenger service.
There was a plan to build a loop just north of this station to turn back Fourth Avenue local trains from 95th Street. The bellmouths for the un-built loop can be seen just north of this station where the bypass tracks join the bridge tracks that stop at DeKalb Avenue.
Final moments of the BMT Myrtle Avenue line before reconstruction
As of tomorrow, the BMT Myrtle Avenue live will shutdown for summer 2017, then not operate between Broadway and Wyckoff Av until April 30th, 2018. This is a compilation video taken earlier this week, days before the line gets closed down for reconstruction.
