Bernard "Buddy" Rich (September 30, 1917 – April 2, 1987) was an American jazz drummer and bandleader.
Known for his virtuoso technique, power and speed, Rich was billed as "the world's greatest drummer" during his career. He performed with many bandleaders, most notably Tommy Dorsey, Harry James, Count Basie, and led his own "Buddy Rich Big Band".
Biography
Early life
Rich was born in Brooklyn to Jewish-American parents Bess (née Skolnik) and Robert Rich, both vaudevillians. His talent for rhythm was first noted by his father, who saw that Buddy could keep a steady beat with spoons at the age of one. He began playing drums in vaudeville when he was 18 months old, billed as "Traps the Drum Wonder". At the peak of Rich's childhood career, he was reportedly the second-highest paid child entertainer in the world (after Jackie Coogan).
At age 11 he was performing as a bandleader. He received no formal drum instruction and went so far as to claim that instruction would only degrade his musical talent. He also never admitted to practicing. He claimed to play the drums only during performances and was not known to read music.
In ancient Mesopotamian religion, a practitioner of a form of divination based on hepatoscopy, reading of omens from a liver of a sacrificial animal. Baru began the divination ceremony by first addressing the oracle gods, Šamaš and Adad, with prayers and benedictions, requesting them to "write" their message upon the entrails of the sacrificial animal. During the Sumerian period, the predictions offered by the divination ceremony were in a form of binary, yes or no answers. In the late Assyrian period, the method evolved to predict specific events, that were in turn considered to be either favorable or unfavorable. The totals of favorable and unfavorable events were tallied to generate either a positive or a negative verdict. Divinations of baru were not universally trusted and there is evidence that Sennacherib separated baru into groups to avoid collusion in situations that necessitated reliable reports to important questions.

Drum Shuffle - Rotten Kid - Buddy Rich Big Band

I won't attempt to blow smoke here - I am NO Buddy Rich. Buddy was "one of a kind," the likes of which we may never see again in our lifetimes. His music, and the music that his band made famous along with him, continue to live on long after his passing. This chart, "Rotten Kid", is one of the BRBB's more high energy shuffle tunes, and we were lucky enough to get a copy of a transcription of the chart done by a man who is, shall we say, "in the know" when it comes to this stuff. ;)
Before you decide to post a comment and trash the drumming or the horns or the sound quality, etc, know that I am my own worst critic, and I don't need your help. (Haha!) I am VERY aware of all of the faults in this clip, ...

I am VERY aware of all of the faults in this clip, from the lack of authentic Buddy feel (again, he's "one of a kind") to the tempo speeding up gradually throughout the piece. :D
With all it's faults, I still hope you enjoy it to some degree. Thanks for the continued support and uplifting commentary from all those who are regular subscribers to my channel - you guys are the best, and you keep me going! So it’s only a paper moon Hanging over a cardboard sea But it wouldn’t be make believe If you believe in me Well it’s only a canvas sky Hanging over a muslin tree But it wouldn’t be make believe If you believe in me Without your love It’s a carnival parade Without your love It’s a melody played on a penny arcade It’s a Barnum & Bailey world Just as phoney as it could be But it wouldn’t be make believe
