An autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) is a robot which travels underwater without requiring input from an operator. AUVs constitute part of a larger group of undersea systems known as unmanned underwater vehicles, a classification that includes non-autonomous remotely operated underwater vehicles (ROVs)– controlled and powered from the surface by an operator/pilot via an umbilical or using remote control. In military applications AUVs are more often referred to simply as unmanned undersea vehicles (UUVs).
History
The first AUV was developed at the Applied Physics Laboratory at the University of Washington as early as 1957 by Stan Murphy, Bob Francois and later on, Terry Ewart. The "Special Purpose Underwater Research Vehicle", or SPURV, was used to study diffusion, acoustic transmission, and submarine wakes.

It had to happen. Large-format additive manufacturing (AM) systems are expanding their use and finding new applications — meaning The Cool Parts Show eventually would meet a cool part too big for the studio. For our first episode involving a part this large, we not only traveled to the part, we went inside the Big Area Additive Manufacturing (BAAM) machine used to produce it.
Additive Engineering Solutions (AES) of Akron, Ohio, used its BAAM capability to allow Dive Technologies to produce hull sections of its autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) without tooling. Dive’s innovation is a UAV capable of long distances and long missions, such as mapping the ocean floor for a week at a time. The flexibility of producing hull components through 3D printing has allowed the Dive founders to realize another possible for this system: allowing UAV users to adopt hulls with different sizes or shapes as their needs change.

The UK Sent Autonomous Underwater Vehicles To Ukraine | Why Are They For?
Unmanned machines capture not only the sky, but also the waters of the seas. We are talking about controlled underwater drones, which are preparing to take their baptism of fire in the Russian-Ukrainian war.
What can these underwater drones do and how will their use help Ukraine? Now you will learn everything.
Just a few months ago, even before the start of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, DARPA signed contracts under the Manta Ray program. Northrop Grumman Systems Corporation and Martin Defense Group are involved in the development and production. Each of these companies must create and manufacture their own version of the Manta Ray underwater drone.
Since then, 9 months have passed. Obviously, the new Manta Ray drones are undergoing successful tests, so the navies of some NATO countries are ready to give Ukraine models of the previous generation.
The British Navy was the first to respond, handing over six REMUS underwater drones to Ukraine.
