Automatic train operation - reshaping the way we manage rail networks
For over 30 years, Alstom has been at the forefront of the development of autonomous systems. Alstom's scalable ATO (automatic train operation) is deployed on regional trains and metros around the world by safely and sustainably reducing travel times and increasing frequency.
Optimising performance at the core of the rail network in Paris: With 1.4 million passengers per day, the RER A line is the busiest line in Europe and the backbone of the Paris and Île-de-France Region. Alstom and its customer commissioned ATO on the RER A line in 2017. With 1 train every 2,5 minutes, we improved stop accuracy, increased the capacity, and achieved up to 3 minutes gain per journey with a 5km/h speed increase.

Automatic train operation means improved rail operations all the way. Existing rail networks routes must be used as efficiently as possible in order to meet the growing demand for rail transport capacities. This is exactly what automatic train operation (ATO) based on the European Train Control system (ETCS) makes possible for shared tracks. ATO over ECTS? The interaction of Siemens Mobility’s ATO solutions with TPS Online, a software for operational timetabling and ad-hoc dispatching, renders further potential for the prevention of delays and sustainable cost reductions.
ATO uses data from infrastructure, track and train schedule information to calculate the ideal speed profile for current conditions at any given time. In combination with TPS (Train Planning & Capacity management) ATO achieves the following:
- 30% throughput increase
- 15% improvement of punctuality
- 37% energy savings
▬ Automatic Train Operation (ATO) ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
What is Automatic Train Operation and How does Automatic Train Operation (ATO) work?
In view of increasing passenger and freight volumes in rail traffic, expanding the transport capacity of existing lines is key to the future viability of rail operations. ATO is a major contribution to this aim, at the same time positively influencing energy consumption and operating costs, and ultimately even improving punctuality and passenger comfort. Combining ATO with TPS Online, Siemens' software solution for train planning and capacity management, paves the way for even further improvement: It becomes possible to react to events such as disruptions and timetable deviations in next to no time, in this way optimizing rail operations as such.
The interaction of ATO, ETCS, and TPS Online:
ATO onboard controls the train’s traction and braking systems for energy-optimized operation. It continuously calculates the optimum speed profile based on the individual journey profile it receives from ATO trackside. To calculate this profile, ATO trackside uses the up-to-date infrastructure, track, and timetable data it obtains from the traffic management system. At the same time, ETCS onboard monitors train movements and speed limits on track, in this way allowing trains to operate safely at shorter headways for optimum usage of track capacity. On top of that, TPS Online enables the real-time rescheduling of trains in the traffic management system to manage short-term disruptions on the fly and avoid conflicts throughout the network.
Making optimum use of track capacities:
ATO automatically controls the acceleration, cruising, coasting, braking, and stopping of the train. It is connected via ATO trackside to the trackside traffic management system enabling continuous transmission of the latest schedule and route information to the train. In addition, TPS Online enables the traffic management system to respond immediately to any unforeseen event on the track. The interaction of the systems renders an optimized traffic flow with higher punctuality and lower energy requirements.
