Whitlam dismissal 'reinforces the need for an Australian head of state': Albanese
Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese says the dismissal of the democratically elected Whitlam government by the Governor-General in 1975 emphasises the need for an Australian head of state.
Private letters between Queen Elizabeth II and former governor-general Sir John Kerr have been released, revealing Sir John dismissed then-prime minister Gough Whitlam without first informing the Queen.
Mr Albanese said the Whitlam government transformed Australia and made it into the modern vibrant community it is today.
The dismissal of a government elected by the Australian people was a blight on Australia’s character as a nation, said Mr Albanese.
“The actions of the governor general on the 11th of November, to dismiss a government, to put himself above the Australian people, is one that reinf...

Broken news: Facebook blocks Australia pages in dispute over law
Facebook has blocked Australian users of its platform from reading and sharing local and international news, stepping up its campaign against government plans to force technology giants to pay publishers for their news content.
“The proposed law fundamentally misunderstands the relationship between our platform and publishers who use it to share news content,” Facebook said in a blog post announcing the move.
Australia is trying to get technology companies, including Facebook and Google, to pay for the news that is widely shared on their sites, as the advertising revenue that once supported publishers evaporates. The law would force them to strike deals with media companies or have fees set for them.

Queen Elizabeth II has arrived in Australia where she was greeted by her Australian representative who is under intense pressure to resign over allegations he covered up child sex abuse when he was an Anglican archbishop.
The Queen and Prince Philip touched down in bright sunshine in Brisbane after a three-hour flight from New Zealand.
Embattled Governor-General Peter Hollingworth bowed to the queen and shook her hand as she stepped down from her chartered British Airways jet.
Hollingworth, who was appointed last year as the Queen's representative here, has refused to resign over claims that he helped cover up allegations of child molestation by teachers, priests and church officers who served in his former diocese in Queensland, Australia's third most populous city.

In the midst of a hard-fought race for the White House, the Democratic presidential and vice-presidential candidates are killed in an airline crash, and with little time to prepare a new campaign, the Republican candidate, Vice President Brian Lewis (Nick Searcy), seems all but guaranteed to win. With practically nothing to loose, party head Martin Geller (Dylan Baker) approaches Gilliam and asks him to stand as the Democrat's presidential candidate. While Gilliam is dubious at first, before long his streetwise style and willingness to face the issues head-on earns him surprising figures in the polls, especially after he persuades his short-fused older brother, Mitch Gilliam (Bernie Mac), to join the ticket as vice presidential candidate -- a big jump for a bail bondsman. Gilliam's love life also becomes more complicated as his ex-girlfriend Kim (Robin Givens) decides she wants him back now that he has a shot at the White House, even though Gilliam only has eyes for Lisa (Tamala Jones). Head of State marked the directorial debut for comic and actor Chris Rock, who also co-wrote and co-produced the film.

Don't miss the HOTTEST NEW TRAILERS: http://bit.ly/1u2y6pr
CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Alderman Mays Gilliam (Chris Rock) helps an elderly neighborhood woman save her cat from a house that's about to be demolished.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Can a high-attitude African-American politician who says what he thinks stand a chance in a presidential campaign? Mays Gilliam (Chris Rock) is a straight-talking alderman representing a inner-city neighborhood in Washington, D.C.

Towards Racially Unbiased Skin Tone Estimation via Scene Disambiguation
Virtual facial avatars will play an increasingly important role in immersive communication, games and the metaverse, and it is therefore critical that they be inclusive. This requires accurate recovery of the albedo, regardless of age, sex, or ethnicity. While significant progress has been made on estimating 3D facial geometry, appearance estimation has received less attention. The task is fundamentally ambiguous because the observed color is a function of albedo and lighting, both of which are unknown. We find that current methods are biased towards light skin tones due to (1) strongly biased priors that prefer lighter pigmentation and (2) algorithmic solutions that disregard the light/albedo ambiguity. To address this, we propose a new evaluation dataset (FAIR) and an algorithm (TRUST) t...

To address this, we propose a new evaluation dataset (FAIR) and an algorithm (TRUST) to improve albedo estimation and, hence, fairness. Specifically, we create the first facial albedo evaluation benchmark where subjects are balanced in terms of skin color, and measure accuracy using the Individual Typology Angle (ITA) metric. We then address the light/albedo ambiguity by building on a key observation: the image of the full scene –as opposed to a cropped image of the face– contains important information about lighting that can be used for disambiguation. TRUST regresses facial albedo by conditioning on both the face region and a global illumination signal obtained from the scene image. Our experimental results show significant improvement compared to state- of-the-art methods on albedo estimation, both in terms of accuracy and fairness. The evaluation benchmark and code are available for research purposes at https://trust.is.tue.mpg.de.

French is a de facto language in the states of Maine and Louisiana, while New Mexico state law grants Spanish a special status.[9][10][11][12] Cherokee is an official language in the Cherokee Nation tribal jurisdiction area and in the United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians based in east and northeast Oklahoma.[13][14][15]
