In 1989, Assab had a population of 39,600 inhabitants. It possesses an oil refinery, which was shut down in 1997 for economic reasons. Nearby is the site of the ancient city of Arsinoe.
Climate
Assab has a hot desert climate (Köppen climate classificationBWh) typical of the Danakil Region. The climate is hyper-arid, extremely dry and extremely hot. The city receives an extremely low average annual rainfall amount with a bit more than 40mm (1.57in) and consistently experiences soaringly high temperatures both during the day and during the night. The annual mean average temperature approaches 31°C (87.8°F) and it's one of the highest found in the world. The combination of strong rain shortage and extreme heat makes the city a desert one. The sky is always clear and bright throughout the year.

Ethiopia has stopped using Assab's shipyards since the latest war began in early June.
Business has been transferred instead to nearby Djibouti, resulting in a virtual shutdown of the port.
Assab has a population of about 30-thousand people and about 60 per cent are Ethiopian nationals.
Ethiopians in the town say they have been left unemployed and penniless since the outbreak of fighting and they want to cross the border, 71 kilometers away, where both armies have amassed their forces.
The Ethiopian government has accused its neighbour of torture and forced deportations.
Ethiopian nationals in Assab were asked to select representatives to put their case to the local city administration.
The meeting broke up without any headway being made.
Since the war began in early June, Ethiopia has expelled more than 7-thousand Eritrean nationals and thousands more are under arrest and held in detention camps.
Eritrea on the other hand has deported only a few people and attempted to arrange transport for those Ethiopians who have wanted to return home.
While the port remains inactive and work is scarce more Ethiopians want to leave

Three days after Ethiopia announced its two year war with Eritrea was over, Eritrea says its largest port has been attacked.
According to the Eritreans, Ethiopian forces launched their attack against the strategic Red Sea port of Assab early on Saturday.
Ethiopia, which is landlocked, had access to Assab port before hostilities broke out two years ago.
Eritrea had prepared for a possible attack on its most strategic and largest port, Assab in the far west, moving arms and troops there earlier this week.
On Saturday Eritrea reported that the port was under attack and called for help from the international community.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"Now they are invading or they have launched a clear invasion against Eritrea so Eritrea is calling for the international community, Eritrea is calling for immediate action now, Eritrea is calling for sanctions to be imposed on Ethiopia. This is a clear act of invasion."
SUPER CAPTION: Eritrean Presidential Spokesman Yemane Gebremeskel
Ethiopia said the war was over on Wednesday after it retook land it said Eritrea had occupied in 1998 and which originally sparked off the war.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"We will fight our own war but the international community must impose economic sanctions and other sanctions on Ethiopia, it must lift its arms embargo on Eritrea."
SUPER CAPTION: Eritrean Presidential Spokesman Yemane Gebremeskel
Strategically Assab is Ethiopia's prime target in all out war with Eritrea.
When fighting broke out in May 1998 Eritrea stopped Ethiopia from using Assab, forcing it to rely on Djibouti's port.
When hunger struck in eastern Ethiopia earlier this year Eritrea said it would allow food aid to go through the port and into Ethiopia but Ethiopia refused.
Ethiopia says it's ready to withdraw from land it acknowledges if its neighbour joins in a cease-fire.
The alleged attack on Assab comes as indirect peace talks in Algeria try to work out a plan for Ethiopia's withdrawal from Eritrea.

SOUNDBITE: (English)
"What I mean before this conflict started almost 98 per cent of this accommodated Ethiopian cargo, it is transit cargo - 98 per cent. Basically after the conflict, as you know, the Ethiopian government announced that all Ethiopian cargo, all ships which have Ethiopian cargo should have to go to Djibouti."
