Ash Ra Tempel

Ash Ra Tempel was a German krautrock group of the 1970s, which is an example of cosmic or ambient space rock.

History

The group was originally founded by guitarist Manuel Göttsching, keyboardist/drummer Klaus Schulze, and bassist Hartmut Enke in 1971. All three founding members had previously played together as part of the short-lived group Eruption founded by Conrad Schnitzler. Prior to that Schnitzler and Schulze had worked together in Tangerine Dream.

A short-lived project Manuel Göttsching had in 1970 was the Steeple Chase Blues Band, which also included Hartmut Enke, Wolfgang Müller, and Volker Zibell.

Ash Ra Tempel released its self-titled debut album in June 1971. This release is considered by critics to be a classic of the genre; Schulze temporarily departed for a solo career shortly after its release. Schwingungen (1972), Seven Up (with Timothy Leary) (1972), and Join Inn (1973) are all considered key works from the band. The pop-oriented 1973 album Starring Rosi was thus named because it featured lead vocals by Rosi Mueller.

Ash Ra Tempel is the eponymous debut studio album by the Krautrock band Ash Ra Tempel. It was recorded in March 1971 and released in June 1971 on Ohr. The most recent reissue has been in 2011 on MG Art. It has elements of Krautrock, progressive rock, and ambient music.

While a steady rhythm section chugs along (not near the intensity Schulze brought on the debut however) - there are sax bursts, fuzz guitar flashes, tribal drums, and other phased sounds and noises creating a very edgy atmosphere. Through the chaos, John L. is screaming and anguishing (through electronic effects) about the decay of cities and the Earth. "Flowers must die, flowers must die", "Die, die, die, die ,die..." and all hell breaks loose. Here, Manuel Göttsching pulls off the most angry and concise guitar solo of his career, and at the end, if the listener is not left in a heap in the middle of the floor - well, they're just not getting involved! In keeping with Ash Ra Tempel's wild side/mellow side theme introduced on the first album, the flip 19 minute composition is an exercise in choral, tranquil electronic beauty - recalling Pink Floyd's Saucerful Of Secrets at their most cosmic and trippy. Negli ultimi minuti l'ingresso della chitarra elettrica dagli echi floydiani (ma, per una curiosa retroversione storica, più vicina ai Pink Floyd che saranno - ossia successivi al '77 - che quelli che erano stati sino a quel momento). L'elettronica degli anni settanta (soprattutto di marca tedesca) avrebbe di lì a qualche anno offerto spunto al famigerato filone cd. "New Age", che al di là di pochissime eccezioni avrebbe offerto (e ancora offre) un'enorme massa di trite rivisitazioni in salsa pseudoesoterica dei capolavori che furono.Tale è del resto il destino di un genere musicale, quello che sia, nella sua fase epigonale; ridurre l'originale ad uno standard, e trasformare l'impulso creativo in una manieristica ripetizione. Distanziandosi dalle precedenti matrici psichedeliche, il Göttsching solista radicalizza le intuizioni degli A.R.T e muovendosi verso un suono decisamente più elettronico, sulla scia di Schulze e i Tangerine Dream. NEW AGE OF EARTH è il primo di quattro album poco conosciuti dal grande pubblico, ed è notoriamente considerato il suo lavoro di maggior pregio. Quattro composizioni per un totale di 47 minuti, a creare un prodotto fortemente omogeneo nonostante ciascuna di esse abbia - ad un orecchio più attento - una personalità specifica: "Sunrain" leggera ed allegra con loop pianistico di base quasi naif; "Ocean of tenderness", una pennellata di spazi sconfinati e sereni, senza un beat ritmico ad incresparne il paesaggio; "Deep distance", composizione metà Kraftwerk (di più) metà Tangerine dream (di meno), dolcemente incalzante per via di un beat elettronico discreto e di (alttrettanto discreti) saliscendi tastieristico; "Nightdust", infine, lunga suite elettronica di 20 minuti dalle atmosfere improvvisamente rarefatte e cupe, con una serie di isolati cinguettii sonori sullo sfondo che non allentano la tensione; sembra di trovarci d'un tratto dinanzi ad un inesorabile crepuscolo che avvolge uccelli ed insetti e li riduce progressivamente al silenzio. Negli ultimi minuti l'ingresso della chitarra elettrica dagli echi floydiani (ma, per una curiosa retroversione storica, più vicina ai Pink Floyd che saranno - ossia successivi al '77 - che quelli che erano stati sino a quel momento). L'elettronica degli anni settanta (soprattutto di marca tedesca) avrebbe di lì a qualche anno offerto spunto al famigerato filone cd. "New Age", che al di là di pochissime eccezioni avrebbe offerto (e ancora offre) un'enorme massa di trite rivisitazioni in salsa pseudoesoterica dei capolavori che furono.Tale è del resto il destino di un genere musicale, quello che sia, nella sua fase epigonale; ridurre l'originale ad uno standard, e trasformare l'impulso creativo in una manieristica ripetizione. Ash Ra Tempel

Ash Ra Tempel was a German krautrock group of the 1970s, which is an example of cosmic or ambient space rock.

History

The group was originally founded by guitarist Manuel Göttsching, keyboardist/drummer Klaus Schulze, and bassist Hartmut Enke in 1971. All three founding members had previously played together as part of the short-lived group Eruption founded by Conrad Schnitzler. Prior to that Schnitzler and Schulze had worked together in Tangerine Dream.

A short-lived project Manuel Göttsching had in 1970 was the Steeple Chase Blues Band, which also included Hartmut Enke, Wolfgang Müller, and Volker Zibell.

Ash Ra Tempel released its self-titled debut album in June 1971. This release is considered by critics to be a classic of the genre; Schulze temporarily departed for a solo career shortly after its release. Schwingungen (1972), Seven Up (with Timothy Leary) (1972), and Join Inn (1973) are all considered key works from the band. The pop-oriented 1973 album Starring Rosi was thus named because it featured lead vocals by Rosi Mueller.
