History
Early years
A seaside community, Asbury Park is located on New Jersey's central coast. Developed in 1871 as a residential resort by New York brush manufacturer James A. Bradley, the city was named for Francis Asbury, the first American bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Church in the United States.
The Asbury Park Press is a daily newspaper in Monmouth and Oceancounties of New Jersey and has the third largest circulation in the state. Its investigative staff, led by editor Paul D'Ambrosio, has been awarded numerous national honors in journalism, including the Selden Ring Award for Investigative Reporting, two the Associated Press Managing Editors' Award for Public Service, the National Headliner Award for Public Service and two National Headliner Awards for Best Series (large papers). The Press' investigative team was a finalist for the 2010 Pulitzer Prize in Public Service.
The newspaper was also the home to editorial cartoonistSteve Breen when he won the Pulitzer Prize in that category in 1998.
In 2004 the story "Profiting from Public Service" by Paul D'Ambrosio, Jason Method, James W. Prado Roberts, Alan Guenther, Jean Mikle and staff won the Farfel Prize for excellence in investigative reporting which was the inauguration of this award. It also won The National Headliner Award for public service, the SPJ/SDX National Award for public service in the large papers category, and the APME Public Service Award for large papers.
To many New Jersey residents, it is simply referred to as "The Shore." A commonly-said phrase within New Jersey is to go "down the shore", or to have done something "down the shore".
Famous for its many boardwalks with arcades, water parks, and amusement parks boasting hundreds of rides and attractions, the Jersey Shore is a popular vacation spot for New Jerseyans, New Yorkers, and Pennsylvanians, and various other states in the Northeastern United States. Certain communities are also popular with visitors from the nearby Canadian provinces of Quebec and Ontario.
Jersey Shore is an American reality television series which ran on MTV from December 3, 2009 to December 20, 2012 in the United States. The series follows the lives of eight housemates spending their summer at the Jersey Shore in the U.S. state of New Jersey. Season 2 followed the cast escaping the cold northeast winter to Miami Beach, Florida, with Season 3 returning to the Jersey Shore. The fourth season, filmed in Italy, premiered on August 4, 2011. The show returned for a fifth season, at Seaside Heights, New Jersey on January 5, 2012. The fifth season finale aired on March 15, 2012. On March 19, 2012, MTV confirmed that the series would return for their sixth season. On August 30, 2012, MTV announced that the Jersey Shore would end after the sixth season, which premiered on October 4. The series finale aired on December 20, 2012.
The show debuted amid large amounts of controversy regarding the use of the words "Guido/Guidette", portrayal of Italian-Americans due to the fact some of the members of the cast were not of Italian descent or fully of Italian descent and for perpetuating stereotypes, as well as scrutiny from locals because the cast members were not residents of the area.
