While there is a tendency to misspell his name as "Aryabhatta" by analogy with other names having the "bhatta" suffix, his name is properly spelled Aryabhata: every astronomical text spells his name thus, including Brahmagupta's references to him "in more than a hundred places by name". Furthermore, in most instances "Aryabhatta" would not fit the metre either.
Time and place of birth
Aryabhata mentions in the Aryabhatiya that it was composed 3,600 years into the Kali Yuga, when he was 23 years old. This corresponds to 499 CE, and implies that he was born in 476.
Aryabhata provides no information about his place of birth. The only information comes from Bhāskara I, who describes Aryabhata as āśmakīya, "one belonging to the aśmaka country." During the Buddha's time, a branch of the Aśmaka people settled in the region between the Narmada and Godavari rivers in central India; Aryabhata is believed to have been born there.
Aryabhata, named after Indian astronomer Aryabhata, is the remnant of a lunarimpact crater located in the eastern Mare Tranquillitatis. The crater has been almost submerged by lava-flow, and now only an arc-shaped ridge formed from the eastern half of the rim remains above the lunar mare. This crater was previously identified as Maskelyne E before being named by the IAU in 1979.

It was launched by the Soviet Union on 19 April 1975 from Kapustin Yar using a Kosmos-3M launch vehicle. It was built by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to gain experience in building and operating a satellite in space. The launch came from an agreement between India and the Soviet Union directed by U.R. Rao and signed in 1972. It allowed the USSR to use Indian ports for tracking ships and launching vessels in return for launching Indian satellites.
On 19 April 1975, the satellite's 96.46-minute orbit had an apogee of 611 kilometres (380mi) and a perigee of 568 kilometres (353mi), at an inclination of 50.6 degrees. It was built to conduct experiments in X-ray astronomy, aeronomics, and solar physics. The spacecraft was a 26-sided polyhedron 1.4 metres (4.6ft) in diameter. All faces (except the top and bottom) were covered with solar cells. A power failure halted experiments after four days and 60 orbits with all signals from the spacecraft lost after five days of operation. According to Soviet media reports, the satellite continued to function and transmit information for some time. The satellite reentered on the Earth's atmosphere on 11 February 1992.

Ancient mathematician Aryabhata describes the concept of ZERO
Taken from BBC Learning's The Approximate History of Maths. Poem by Myles McLeod. Designed by Greg McLeod. Directed by The Brothers McLeod.
Aryabhata was the first of the major mathematician-astronomers from the classical age of Indian mathematics and Indian astronomy. He wrote in verse! Here he recounts the concept of zero and also the problem of very large numbers like the Jyotiba number.
The invention of zero, or rather the realisation that it was a number just like any other, was one of the greatest conceptual leaps in the history of mathematics, one that would spur the rise of modern science.
Today it is announced that the written record of zero in the region which discovered this influential digit dates back four centuries further than most scholars had thought, thanks to carbon dating of an ancient manuscript written on 70 leaves of birch bark, held at the University of Oxford’s Bodleian Libraries.
